Amazing what happens when you drive your car like a go kart and stay off the rubbered up line, same thing Max did and everyone thought it was magic. Go karts 101 stay off the rubber.
This race was absolutely is fantastic, it was another great race and finish at Daytona again that had literally everything in it!!!! This year is going to be absolutely incredible!!
@@nismo300zr2 Just gonna add another reply to say your comment is stupid as hell and deserves a ratio, they sure have and in harsher conditions than most sports cars lol. Also it sounds like you're vaguely insulting motorcycles, but ...??
these mx5 races are seriously the best kind of racing! IMSA always know how to put on a show and this series is always wild! always a treat to watch, keep up the good work IMSA!
Watching this makes me so proud of my little 21’ MX-5 Club 6MT I have sitting in the garage :) Car is an absolute blast to drive and quite economical as well, I get ~ 30-40mpg and drive it pretty hard. I hope to have it 10+ years into the future, there simply isn’t a more fun car to drive for the money. The power with the NA 2.0l 181hp / 7500rpm motor is “just right” to make it a riot to drive on the street. You can run through the gears hitting the 7500rpm redline without so much concern of losing your license or more importantly your life, etc. Also, weighing just 2340lbs. makes the car so predictable and responsive to driver input which of course inspires confidence! Anyways, if you have the means for it and or can make do with a little 2 seater roadster and love driving, get yourself an MX-5 Miata Yeah you could surely spend more and get something FAR quicker but that car probably won’t be nearly as enjoyable to drive and will end up costing you FAR more money.
I raced carts here, twice. Probably the coolest thing I'll ever do with my life (thanks dad). Used to be a yearly thing on Dec 26th hosted by the WKA, not sure if it's still a thing. We didn't do the bus stop, but the rest of the road course and speedway. While on the speedway it was actually faster to stay on the apron and it was in-bounds, so we would stay down there. But on out and in laps everyone would play on the banking. Could get close to 100mph with just a "5hp" briggs motor. 2 cycles and shifter carts could do even better.
Christ a 5 HP Briggs? Unbelievable you folks were really dialed! I did road racing in IKF in the late 80's. Mostly western series, Sears Point, Laguna Seca, PIR. Some short track dirt at Baylands in Fremont CA. Unfortunately never got to midwest, southern or eastern venues. It cost's a heck of alot, even with sponsors!
The engines were based on the standard 5hp Briggs, same block you'd have on a lawnmower. But of course these were race engines. So after boring them out, high flow carb, bigger cams, etc, they would dyno closer to 20hp. Of course all that meant we were running them on the ragged edge, grenade-ing an engine was common. We had to gear way down for Daytona compared to our local track. (North FL Kart Club, Jacksonville FL) Had the privilege to do a few on the south east coast. Roebling Road, Sebring, Road Atlanta and of course Daytona. We ultimately got out because of the costs too. Dad raced a few years on dirt while I was too young. Once I became of age we moved to the asphalt. Some of my best memories were in that kart, and sharing it with dad of course. Never became an F1 driver though, haha. Would love to do Laguna, the corkscrew had to be fun.
Richard Speir - they still do the WKA Daytona thing the week after Christmas. The 5hp Briggs flat head is long gone though…. short of some vintage enthusiast racers. Btw, it wasn’t a lawn mower engine it was a roto tiller engine. Because of this we called them tater diggers. Now Briggs has a sealed 4 cycle engine that is dedicated to kart racing called an LO206 that dominates the 4 cycle karting scene. Much less expensive because it’s not a builder blueprinted engine, runs on pump gas, and it’s ran pretty much out of the box…. Makes for great even racing that is far less expensive than 2 cycle or blueprinted 4 cycle engine racing.
These guys have nerves of steel!! Phenomenal racing! 👏🏻 To race at this level in the rain?? In the dark?? Gotta love the 24hr of Daytona weekend! Absolutely love MX5 cup series. 👏🏻 Congrats to Tyler for the first race win! 👍🏻 I hope Rollan gets the car fixed for the next race. 🤞🏻
I’m so glad I found a new racing series! I started F1 recently and was looking on RUclips for just anything interesting and so far I’m blown away with the skill of these guys!
What a amazing race! Love the tight packs and ala Nascar pushes😊. And as usual Shea and John spicing up the race with great commentary. Love from The Netherlands❤
@@imsaofficial I'm just accustomed to the "have at it boys" mentality with no penalties for contact in NASCAR. The 08 car didn't spin or even leave the racing surface. He was bumped out of the racing line and lost a few positions. It could even be argued that the 08 turned into the 5. The 5 had his nose at his door on corner entry.
It was funny that Rolan hit the car in front and caused himself to crash, then proceeded to throw a hissy fit in the car. He was probably pissed despite trying to squeeze Gonzalez down and off track at top speed it didn’t work.
I don't know if I would have agreed with that penalty for Wagner over the slightest bit of contact that didn't even cause a big wreck. Looks like a perfect bump and run to me, but it is what it is. The race itself looked fun to watch. Definitely interested in the MX-5 series now.
the pin on the map is still showing Daytona in south JAX or north St Augustine ... you need to move the pin south by quite a bit , OH YES JOHN IS THE BEST

@@mikem7052 iirc at some point in the broadcast the announcer goes over the details of how the cars are stripped down from stock at a shop in Daytona, and reassembled with a bunch of racing parts. but the engine is still a stock MX-5 2 liter - only thing they do with it is seal it off to prevent tampering
I had no idea this series existed but it’s absolutely amazing!
Go back and watch last seasons races. They were all really good.
yoooo, ive been rummaging youtube for anything posted in the last 3 months. This is a gem and a good sign of what's to come
"No bump drafting"
"Noted"
Great race!
Rule 15 Clause C..'apart from MX-5's which may smash each others bumpers all day long'
I could well see a post-race "overall length measurement" test the make sure it isn't more than a few cm too short 😂
But bang drafting is ok
@@mpharr2 Bang drafting, a.k.a. Slam drafting. totally different.
I recognize that the Council has made a decision, but given that it's a stupid ass decision, I have elected to ignore it.
Such a fantastic series!! Cant wait to see more from Zilisch
These announcers and the racing are all SOOOOO good. Thrilled to find these on RUclips to catch up on.
Nice to see a new season starting.
It’s always a pleasure to see the skill of a rain racer like Zilisch dominate in equal cars.I see the car control of the next Kyle Busch in him
Reminiscent of Verstappen as well. Finds grip everywhere where there is no grip lol

Really impressed w Zilisch's driving skill. Great race
Rookie (Zillich) was great, never giving up and finding the right line(s) to get the job done.
One single lap in the MX5 cup is funnier than a whole F1 race.
To be fair to F1 I don't think comedy is what they're aiming for.
"start" 4:51

New life goal, buy a Mazda Mx-5 Cup car and do this. What a finish!

How can yoou not love these mx5 knife fights, a playing field so level it makes BOP look like a joke :)

As a NASCAR fan, its crazy to see the 5 get a drive through penalty for the slight unintentional contact with the 08 at 44:17
As race control calls it, "Incident Responsibility", regardless of whether or not it was intentional.
