- Before you judge Reno or any homeless person addicted to drugs, walk a mile in their shoes! At the age of 7, child protective services removed Reno from living with his mom because of physical abuse. Reno went to live with his dad when he got out of prison. His father introduced Reno to marijuana and porn at the age of 10. Reno was first arrested at the age of 10 for having weed at school.
If you look at the childhood of almost every person on the streets, doing drugs, or doing time in prison, you'll discover years of neglect and childhood trauma. One of the main reasons treatment fails to help people get off drugs is traditional treatment attempts to cure the addict but does not cure the pain people use drugs to escape from. Reno is a good guy doing the best he can to survive homelessness on the streets of Los Angeles. It's nearly impossible to do homelessness sober. We all have addictions that help us escape pain. Some eat too much. Others are addicted to television. Younger generations are addicted to social media and scrolling on their smartphone. People can get addicted to drama and anger. Gambling or the rush of adventure. To put drug addiction in perspective, most addicts live in houses and apartments. You don't see them because they are behind walls.
My point is Reno is a human being. I enjoy talking to him. Reno is always respectful. He wants to get sober. He wants to get off the streets, but the support is not there. Treatment is broken, and treatment without housing fails. There are not enough support services for addiction, mental health, and homelessness, and there's not nearly even close to enough housing!

Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, childhood trauma, lack of a living wage, or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Each year, our groundbreaking educational content reaches more than a billion people across the globe. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.

I recognize this man had terrible parents, but at some point you gotta stop blaming high rent, drugs, your parents and politicians.

Oh yes, people either get destroyed or created in those places. Speaking from personal experience I think such places have negative consequences for the civil society. Treat people like animals long enough and in turn they will turn into animals. But I don't blame us.

its the money making cycle I guess. in Bulgaria the so called child protective services which I call abuser protective agency, is doing a full on investigation on my sister and how she raises her kid on behalf of false claims by the so called father, but dont bother even checking teh checkable things in his false claims and dont care that he doesnt pay child support. they just took the bribe and thats it. and every child like that makes money for the machine so they are pretty fine with that.
He's very articulate & self aware despite his circumstances. I could see him getting clean & becoming an advocate & helping others also.
But he said it best " I don't know how to get back on my feet" that's something we as a community should be able to help.

Reno, my heart goes out to you. I would never judge you. You look so much like my son. Please continue looking for assistance to get off drugs. You had such a unfair start in life as a child. Don't give up on your plans of getting a home. I don't know much about LA, but there has to be services that can get you on the right path. Chronic blaming of parents is a guaranteed recipe for continued unhappiness. He’s been antisocial from the get go and doesn’t want any other way of life. @@5thdimension625 I work, sleep on a cot, shower at the YMCA, and have almost enough saved to buy a van or rent an apartment or room. The worst part of being homeless is having to avoid these scumbag fentanyl/meth addicts who will steal your shit and stab you in a heartbeat.

@@5thdimension625Why has it increased so much in the last 30 years? The government collects taxes and have plenty money for wars. They could house people with a tiny fraction of the military budget. He shouldn't be penalised for using drugs. At the same time it's upto him to get a job. I know lawyers who earn 150k a year plus and use drugs and drink. It's a societal issue and the government not taking the necessary action. If the government doesn't help people then they might aswell not exist.

I see dope in his eye. You ask alot of a person to go from dope to God. To far of a swing of the pendulum. Get this guy sheltered, everytime he wants dope give him some pot, until he free of the addictive stuff. Then send him to a job he can do, that pays him enough to live. Requiring people to suddenly become church goers dosent work. Put them somewhere between hard drugs and god. Like a regular person lives somewhere in between the two extremes.

Wow. For the life this gentleman has lived through so far, he is very articulate. I believe in him-he will get clean. I wish I had the resources to help homeless folks but will do my best to make at least a small donation as soon as I can. Thnx for another compassionate interview. This is a great channel!
This isn't directed at you specifically but I feel the word "clean" is very stigmatizing if coming from non-drug users. It implies drug users are dirty when using drugs/not in recovery.
Nonetheless I can see through this and recognize your comment is made with compassion and overall positivity. Just some food for thought 😄

@@lucasstanding6510 Lucas, my daughter is a heavy addict but has a great attitude; didn’t go through a traumatizing childhood but her adulthood choices & boyfriends were traumatizing. Anyway, she uses the term “clean” to refer to the years she’s been off drugs she was addicted to & uses the word “sober” to refer to the years she’s been off alcohol. I hear what you’re saying though. I will be more conscientious about using the term abstain or abstinence in the future. I’m curious as to why my daughter uses the word clean so freely. In any case, you seem like a super compassionate human being. Stay standing.✊🏼
@@marirose19 I'm a drug user myself and I work very closely with my local community's harm reduction & recovery programming. I don't claim to be able to represent everyone, but because stigma flows from non-drug users to drug users, it doesn't carry the same power when people use the word "clean" to refer to themselves versus when others use the term to label them. Additionally, some people who use drugs may also self-stigmatize, intentionally or not. Unfortunately there is often stigma within and between people who use drugs (an example of this I see far too often is people who use one drug stigmatizing other types of drug use - e.g., abusing alcohol while regarding meth use as "worse" or criminal)
At the end of the day if your daughter explicitly asks you to use the word clean, you may choose to heed this advice when referring to her, but I recommend avoiding the term to refer to people who use drugs more generally (such as the person in this video). All drug users will have different preferences but the consensus is that there is stigmatizing language worth avoiding unless explicitly asked to use that language for a given individual.
I'm not trying to police what language you use of course - do whatever you want. I'm really just trying to raise awareness of how language can produce stigma more generally :)

@@lucasstanding6510 Lucas, I very much understand how ppl self-stigmatize. I’ve seen it happen in other groups that have nothing to do with drugs or alcohol use. An example would be someone with mental illness calling others “crazy” and using that term on a regular basis.
I think I am going to have to simply let it be when my daughter uses the term “clean and sober” or just “clean” bc she doesn’t really like when I say anything that might be different than her POV. She gets angry with me very easily yet a friend of hers or her sister can say the exact same thing & she’s cool as a cucumber & accepting of their words & about whatever has been said.
I can’t ask her sister to talk to her about this for multiple reasons I won’t go into, suffice it to say it’s not for lack of caring on her sister’s part. My daughter definitely is big on the term though bc she celebrates her anniversary with that word every year.
I’ve had to bite my tongue about many things when it comes to her; this will be another. I’ll begin to model using the term abstain and abstinence and who knows? Maybe she’ll pick up on it. For now I’m glad she has continued to abstain bc her life was a living hell & now she’s developed coping mechanisms that are incredibly useful for her in multiple ways & on multiple levels.

I know I’m 4 months late, but I hope your up and at them.
People fall through the cracks and in America the cracks are as wide as the Grand Canyon. I was abused, but I got lucky I've never had to be homeless, I have abused substances since I was 12 to cope with my pain...but I was able to hide it from the judgemental eyes of others behind closed doors. Now at 45 I have good enough Insurance through my job to be in Therapy and I'm starting to put my life back together. Its diabolical that the system doesn't help children who have obviously been abused & traumatized...instead it traumatizes & abuses them even more. I'm happy Reno has a dog for emotional support 💜 If I saw someone letting their dog piss on a homeless person or any vulnerable human Im gonna raise hell at them. Its not hard to understand why homeless people who have been through unimaginable suffering and abused & abandoned by so called family & society are angry and mistrustful of everyone around them...esp. living on the streets which its own horrific trauma day after day. Im truly shocked everyday for the lack of empathy and compassion people have for fellow human beings. Love to you Sir and your adorable Buddy Boy 💜💜

Reno, I'm sorry for the hurt you've endured in your 32 years but now you have children of your own. Now is the time to change for your own children & in so doing; you will heal yourself. I encourage you to reach deep within yourself to do the hard work necessary to break the cycle of broken childhood. You can do this. 💞

When people make a conscious decision to get help/do the hard work to become a better person and/or parent, find stability with a job but then get slammed with a high cost of living it just breaks my heart. Some states are less expensive but many are rising. When the cost of living is reduced then I believe we would see less homeless people, and better parenting.

God bless you Reno. I am an ex-heroin addict. I was headed for death (died a few times but was saved). I don’t want to make this about me but there is hope. There is life after shooting dope. I lost so many friends to fentanyl. It’s so much more dangerous than when I was out there 15+ years ago. Please keep trying and never give up ❤ I needed methadone and then suboxone to get off. You may have already tried that but just another option.
And seriously fuck the douche that let his dog piss on you. If I saw that I would end up in jail for assault.
Just out of interest did you progress to shooting up? There's other ways to consume drugs that don't have the same risks. I've used all sorts in my younger days but I never understood why people shoot up. You can just snort or smoke and you don't need to carry needles etc. I've injected steroids into a muscle for the gym but that was because the tablets rot your liver. That was 20 years ago.

I hope he can get back on his feet quickly. I was homeless for a bit when I had a psychotic episode and lost my job due to mental illness. I know how hard it is, and how easy it is to stay homeless when nobody is around to help.

Thanks for sharing your story with us, Reno. That's not easy. Gotta tell you, I don't agree with you that you're still using because you just don't want to be clean bad enough. I know you have power and can do great things, but some things are bigger than one person alone. Addiction is huge. You probably need to be in the right place and get the right help to kick it. I'm rooting for you.
Reno's right you have to want it more than anything and make it your entire lifes focus. That's when you stop resenting the work of recovery and get grateful. I really hope he gets the willingness to be willing. You can see he's a nice guy.

Reno, I love and respect you brother. We are the same age, and I was in and around Tucson in 06-08 attending a therapeutic boarding school for addiction treatment, called In Balance Ranch Academy. I'm now beyond grateful for my experience there, but at the time I would have rather have been hangin with you

Hi Reno. Kudos for "coming out!" Some thouhgts - keep in mind: I have had my share of shit. So, whatever happened: nobody forced you to keep on using drugs, you passed out on a lot of chances to change, you seem to be stuck on bygones. Again, no offence meant. Whatever happened, was clearly so traumatising to you that you should have had help coping with that, at those very moments. As a psychiatric nurse for 36 years I say that that kind of care for children whose parents are ..... , should be accesible to those children without any consent or payment of the same parents doing the damage, or some doctor consenting. Well that’s the problem isn’t it Esther? Full Recovery requires 3-6-9 months of treatment. How’s Reno supposed to get that? No Offense. It’s effing cold outside, drugs are warm.

So many ppl carry only debit or credit cards these days. I make a point of always having some cash on me so I can donate to folks with signs. On hot summer days I also like to give them some cold fresh water from the store. In the winter, I’ve been known to give ppl a couple pair of socks & even gloves. I don’t say this to say oh aren’t I nice but to remind ppl this is what folks need.
When I give a $20 bill to someone as I’ve been known to do (& I’m in no way well-to-do), I’ve been asked by passengers in my car what if they go buy drugs or alcohol with that? I just say, once I donate money to someone it’s there’s to do with as they wish. I am no one’s judge & jury or even enabler. If they use the money for drugs or alcohol, I only hope they’ll be well sooner than later.
I also wish this country will start providing housing & health insurance & good food to all, to name just a few necessities that would be easy to pay for if we’d stop wasting our money on the war machine!✌🏼

This story was so touching to me, because I live in the Tucson area, where he is from. He is around the age of my own two sons. I prayed and prayed for this young man. He really touched my heart. He deserved to be loved and cherished as a child. 💔His whole life would have been different. God bless him and relieve him of his struggles with addiction, and the heavy emotional burden he carries.
Homeless people are made in God’s image, just like all the clean, housed people. “As you do unto the least of these, you have done unto me” said Jesus our Savior. I pray he can get a break and have a fresh start, in Jesus’ name.❤️

I just don’t understand, even tho I have seen many of these people. As a child I was been mercilessly. In the summer time I would spend months in my room where they wouldn’t let me put the lights on, brought me my food, and I had to sleep by 6
( I was in 2nd grade by then)
I wasn’t allowed to go to the bathroom at night or until the morning because he would be violent. I had an empty coffee can would dump the crayons out and pee in it then after he left in the morning I would empty it and put the crayons back. I told my sister what I did so she could do it too. She told on me. He didn’t need much of a reason to beat me. When he would beat me if I cried he would beat me more, if I didn’t cry he would say I didn’t have enough so he would beat me more. Vicious cycle. So much more…
He's an evil piece of dirt and you didn't deserve ANY of that.
Reno sounds as if he had a really rough childhood. This can affect a person for their entire lives. I can relate but I wasn't thrown out.... our family was fractured by divorce in 1968. I'm a survivor is all. I hope Reno can improve his circumstances because it can't be easy being homeless....& with his canine companion. It's so very sad. I am ♥️🙏 that you'll overcome & be able to make a life for yourself, though it's an uphill battle I'm sure. I use oxy every 4 to 6 hours because of chronic pain. I'm 65 & have many conditions. We're all 🙏for you! You're not alone because spiritually we're with you. It's not right that the powers that be don't do more to house people.

Most homeless people are addicts & mentally ill. It’s a much much smaller percentage of homeless people who don’t have addiction & mental illness. They have it rough. It’s sad.
Most homeless people are sober. Most addicts are on housing and apartments. 1.4 million children under the age of 16 were homeless last year. The average age of a homeless person is 11.
@@InvisiblePeople The youth that you speak of is news to me. Your channel doesn’t show the majority then if it’s the youth. But if you consider people living with other people but don’t have a fixed address as NOT homeless than ok. The fact is that a lot of people without fixed addresses are also homeless. Those are the addicts your speaking of. & as for mental illness many homeless are also mentally ill. It’s a sad truth. I worked in a homeless shelter for roughly ten years. I deal closely with the homeless. My ex wife was homeless & diagnosed with psychosis. Some symptoms of mental illness are homelessness because they are willing to let go of everything. As I said it’s a sad case. But it’s the hardcore truth.
Do you know what the homeless number is I'm about to move there , la . I looked online all I could find was young adult shelters and women shelters ,also I do get payed I work so if you know of any ro and boards or like rooms or studios for rent that are affordable .let me know

I bet this guy would be brilliant in a job if he could get clean and really stick at it. He seems intelligent, there's just that missing piece or pieces of the puzzle in order for him to thrive.
