  • Took a bit of a tumble recently and ended up in a field. Shifters and cranks a little scratched but on investigation everything was functional and didn't need replacing.
I'm not completely broken either though it takes more to fix me.
The bottom bracket on the right hand side had an amount of grit/dirt in it. These are sealed units to prevent moisture and dirt getting in but a 30 mph crash buggered that up.
When rotated there was an audible grinding noise and you could feel it was....gritty?!
So, I captured in pictures and the occasional short video clip the process to remove and replace. I'm not an expert and if a keen amateur like me can manage this then I'm sure you can as well.
Used a Shimano Hollow Tech II BB Socket BBR60 Tool with a 1/2" driver to remove/install the bottom brackets.

Excellent video, thank you: all the info one needs in a very succinct and clear format.

The water dripping out of the BB shell when you removed the cup, is kind of a concern. probably could modify the cable guide screw with a few #40 drill holes and a #30 straight up the screw head or drill a hole in the Shell. good one handed video.

Yeah, I was not happy with that either. Not enough to actually do anything about it though. Slightly reticent about putting even small holes in the frame. One through the screw would be an idea though, would there always be a little water left?
Hoped it was a result of the crash and the rather rigorous clean I put the bike through after the crash. I've not seen it before or since - coincidence?
There was no evidence of water damage on the screw itself, maybe stainless so I wouldn't see it. The aluminium frame should be solid though.

Thanks man, great video. I have exact same bike with 5k winter road miles and a few thousand on the trainer so I expect I'm well overdue a new BB.

Thanks for the tip about the screw. I forgot to loosen it before removing the previous bottom bracket.

Hello. May I ask: how many kilometres/miles do the BBR60 last to you?
I ask because I'm about to upgrade my BB from cartridge to external bearings and I read online that I have to face the bb shell (or do "facing").
If I don't the BB may not last long. I saw your video and your bike seems not have been faced, so my question..

Hey to install this on 68mm shell you don’t need spacers right? The google results all confuse me with BB spacers needed for 68 and 83mm shells 😭

Apologise, missed this question. Correct. No spacers were needed on this install. Ivangeorgiev asked the same thing (bottom of the comments section).

¿Es necesario volver a apretar el tornillo de abajo cuando instalas el nuevo BB? ¿Al subir el tornillo no puede dañar la pieza de plástico negra?

The screw does need to be tightened again - that screw holds a plastic piece that guides the derailleur cable. As the section of the BB is narrower at that point, the screw doesn't touch the central section.

Hello, I look for the tool to remove the bottom bracket BBR60 Ultegra, anyone knows the shimano's reference ? Thank's for your help !

I used a Shimano HollowTech II BB60 Tool TL-FC37 in this video. There are other less expensive tools, this is almost twice as expensive now from when I bought it.

May I know your bottom frame width? 68mm or 70mm?

    • @jace75
      @jace75  3 года назад

I used an English thread which is for bike frames with 68mm wide bottom bracket shells.

    • @jace75

As far as I know, Shimano Road Hollowtech II crank sets are designed for 68 mm wide BB shells so no spacers are required for these.

I had a quick look around and for a road bike with the chainset I'm using it's fine without. If it's going on a MTB then spacers may be (probably are) needed.
