      In fact some games not working correctly on Windows did work better on Proton to my surprise.
      Proton is new technology and when Developers get used to testing on it and the Steam Deck there will be a lot more compatibility.
      In fact I expect a large chunk of future and upcoming games to work on Proton / Deck going forward.

    The steam deck will definitely encourage more support and development for games to run on this and simply just Linux and that’s great news for anyone that cares. There’s a chance a bunch of games will never run properly on steam deck, but there’s also the hope of other hobbyist developers making them either “run somewhat effectively” or work with certain emulators. Steam deck is definitely not only a console, but a tool for developers.

    Honestly not all Steam games run in Windows either, I have tons of older games with deprecated license servers, unavailable 3rd party tools like "Games for Live Windows", "Gamespy" etc. I have also had trouble with games like Psychonauts & Beyond Good & Evil having graphical glitches (Unless you look at community guides on how to fix- or patch these old games... which can admittedly often be applied to Linux as well). The only difference is that Steam in Windows don't have data on all of those titles. I would argue that we are VERY close to having equal compatibility in Linux, except anti-cheat and VR-games. (which is expected) And honestly I wouldn't like to play either of these kind of games on the steam deck. First off, in competitive games you are at a severe competitive disadvantage using a controller (no matter if you are a touchpad-gyro wizard). Many multiplayer games wouldn't be fun. And when it comes to VR, well the Steam Deck doesn't have the grunt to run many of them. So really, I am positive towards Valve's commitment to the Steam Deck. I run Linux on my laptop, and most games just work out of the box for it, Especially with the latest version of Proton. Windows doesn't equal 100% gold standard either.

    • @JoeChip
      @JoeChip  2 года назад

  • @TheJackiMonster
    @TheJackiMonster 2 года назад +2

    I think the input is not a huge problem since you can make a lot of games playable via configurations for the gamepad controls, touchpads, gyro and additional buttons. In worst case you can use an external mouse or keyboard as well which is just somewhat inconvenient. But you can still play the game.
    What's more annoying is the aspect of text or UI not scaling to the smaller screen. So in some games you won't be able to read important text on the screen. Valve has implemented a magnifier to help with that but I assume the best way to tackle this problem is an external monitor with higher resolution. However then it becomes a potential performance issue depending on the game. If it's just a slower text based game, you should be able to play it. But if it's an RTS game were performance matters more, you have to hope lower settings will enable you to play on 1080p since upscaling would hassle with the texts readability again. ^^'
    So I agree this problems are issues but they are not fully without solutions. There will obviously still be some rare game which won't work with Proton until it gets patched to allow that game as well. Some games with anticheat software might not be playable at all as long their publisher won't allow it. Therefore nobody should expect to play all games on the Deck. But it's definitely more games than on any other console ever... in the end I think that's reasonable. ^^'

    2:47 yikes no audio that's embarrassing 😂
    It's not really fair to say that something will or won't run every game deterministically. You cannot say for sure either way that it will ever run or not run every game at some point. It's more likely that it won't but it's far from impossible. Only the Sith deal in absolutes, I feel that nerdy reference applies here.

    • @JoeChip
      @JoeChip  2 года назад +1

      More bloody annoying than embarrassing. The audio was working fine during editing. I have put a link into the full GN video, though, and it’s definitely worth watching. GN do fantastic work.
      I can say with absolute certainty that some games will never run (or run well) on the Steam Deck. But I have also said (repeatedly) that that doesn’t matter if people go in with their eyes open. Some games won’t run (or require huge amounts of work to get running) on Windows even though they are on sale on Steam. Some of us have been moaning about that for years. The Steam Deck adds a further layer of complexity in that you have to use a compatibility layer with many games. It’s just not feasible to think that every game will run. And even if you could get them to run, would they be enjoyable to play?

    This video is such a straightforward take, that I was surprised by people's reaction.
    I guess the people are interpreting this video as you digging on the deck instead of you trying to set realistic expectations.
    Personally I think 90%+ compatibility is more than achievable. There are no hard technical barriers, but "completing" Proton will take sustained and dedicated effort.
    I do take issue with your claim at 9:11. Not because I think it's wrong but because I think the logic used to get there is wrong.
    I think the range of verified titles will approach/match the switch within 2 deck generations. At 9:30 we already see the games that have been recommended by 3 or more on ProtonDB exceeds the switch's catalogue.
    However if creating a performant handheld with a compelling library was all it took to beat nintendo, the vita would be top dog today. Unfortunately I have no idea what the necessary "it factor" could be.

And as Proton develops as well as game devs looking at the Steam Deck in mind when making titles, it's possible that it will have many thousands of playable titles in the near future. No need to make two videos trying to defend a silly point which ultimately just pits people against people.

      Your argument makes no sense. No one wants a tablet and the Switch Lite has fixed controllers and the Switch itself is not exactly tiny, even the Switch lite made more sense if you ignore the fact it can't switch while still called the Switch. And the size is not that bad. I see these complaints about size as simply an excuse to criticize something you haven't actually experienced yet but feel complained to criticize it anyways.

      @@charlescortes1935 I have a red box Switch, and it would suck to have those tiny JoyCons permanently attached. I play it primarily as a "All-in-one" console like a tablet with a controller.
      I've also owned: Gameboy, Gameboy Color, SEGA Game Gear, PSP and now Switch.

      @@newbutthunt If the joy cons were permanently attached it would defeat the point of the name of the console and the design. The Steam Deck wasn't meant to be a switchable console beyond being able to play it on a bigger screen. Ironically enough the Steam Deck is a literal all-in-one console where you can game, watch videos, listen to music and even edit documents and media. Sounds to me like the Steam Deck is nearly a perfect console for you minus the inability to disconnect the controllers.
      Oh, and I have owned multiple consoles as well: Atari 5200, Sega Master System, Sega Gamegear NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Gamecube, Wii, Gameboy, Gameboy Advanced, 3DS, Switch, Switch Lite, PS2, PS3, PS4, PSP, Xbox One and soon the Steam Deck. I've also owned multiple gaming PCs and tablets. So, I know a thing or two about gaming systems.

    There was no sound to the video you showed 🤫 but who cares about the steam deck really?

      Yeah, several people have pointed that out. It’s bloody annoying because it played fine during editing, so I really have no idea what happened. I’ve linked to the entire GN video, though, and that’s definitely worth watching.
      But how dare you, sir? Everybody has to have the same enthusiasm for the Steam Deck as me. It’s mandatory 😉
