RIP Cathal Coughlin. You were the very essence of righteous fury. Whether it be Microdisney or Fatima Mansions, you wrote fabulous songs. Gone, but for those who saw you onstage never to be forgotten.
@@artmonk8576 it was but always remember it as ED's. Best 3 THE THE @ Olympia 2000 March, Dandy Warhols... again the Olympia gig in 2003 and The Jesus and Mary Chain at The Top Hat 1989 Special mention to Primal Scream @ Olympia and Beth Orton Vicar Street in 2002 (no better place than the Olympia for a gig just special)
Just love this song. Even though it is years since I heard it played, I still think of it and hum it to myself often, like when I pass a bus on my bike :-)
Love this song from the Fatima mansions C.C. Was A fantastic songwriter and way ahead of his time I suppose I am a loser as I only take the bus 20 years on 😂😂 But Apparently Only losers take their car nowadays ( how times have changed ) thanks for your fabulous contribution to the music industry. i am a big fan of your songwriting since your early days
Still one of my favorite songs, even after all these years. Fatima Mansions should have been bigger in the U.S., but there was no convenient pigeonhole to stick them.
RIP Cathal, taken from the world far, far too soon. I seem to remember this tune was written as a response to something that Margaret Thatcher said about young people being failures if they didn't own their own car. Think I'm correct in saying that, anyone else recall this?
I worked with a guy in Dublin who knew Cathal in London and saw him waiting at a bus stop as he passed by in his mate's car. He says he rolled down the window and shouted, "Only losers take the bus!" The rest, they say, is history. True story. The guy I worked with was also a musician in a number of bands at the time.
let me in let me in let me in 1000 percent!!! still to this day NOONE has ever matched up to the gigs the Mansions put on fuckin legendary... Eamon Dorans / Midnight at the Tiv jesus those were the days, no fuckin mobile phones or bouncers tellin ya not to move
@David it seems rather suspicious that numerous quotes or attributions of Thatcher's now seemingly lack hard evidence....almost like her record has been cleansed.
It would be quite a strange thing for her to say, given that a large number of her supporters worked in London and would have no choice but to take public transport into work each day.....
Instant classis. Absolutely awesome in all ways imagineable, special thanks to Mauro, for digging "Viva Dead Ponies" up from his basement and telling us about it.
Glounthaune 1987. Microdisney. Waiting in Golden Discs to see if Cathal made top 10. Jesus, life was a bit shite then, London 1990 Fatima Mansions at the Mean Fiddler - Only Losers Take the Bus etc - different story.
'If a man uses public transport at the age of 30, he is a failure' (Margaret Thatcher) 'Si à 50 ans on n'a pas une Rolex, c'est qu'on a raté sa vie' (Jacques Séguéla) 'Merci, Jacques Séguéla' (Nathalie Kosciusko-Morizet)
I have that video on vhs tape somewhere in my vast collection of old tired tapes... brilliant song - went out and bought VIVA DEAD PONIES and VALHALLA AVENUE on the strength of this fabulous song.
Can anybody tell me who these guys are, I come from an old inner city flats complex in Dublin city known as " Fatima Mansions, I was searching for videos about the flats and found these guys, are they from Fatima or something 😂
I'll take the Hilary/Bernie short bus over the Trump bandwagon any day. To hear that guy giving it "make America great again". Great at what? At bombing the hell out of people? At socking it to the poor? Then I cheer up when I remember I don't live there.

Such sad news. First video I went for after I heard.
Only just now heard the news - can't quite believe it
in my top 3 gigs of all time Eamonn Doran's and the Mansions packed in so many but the place was buzzin never forget that gig

How is this band not globally and eternally revered throughout all of time and food?
Godspeed to you Cathal on your next journey.
Sad day 😞
I loved this song the first time I heard it when it came out, a genuine classic track. Listened to it so often. RIP sir, sad day.
Just love this song. Even though it is years since I heard it played, I still think of it and hum it to myself often, like when I pass a bus on my bike :-)

Saw this on Snub and then went out and bought the album. Was a really important show at the time. Connected me to many great artists

I love this song. I played it to death when it came out. Thanks for posting!!
ah man, just seen the news. This clip is one I often thought of and regularly came back to watch. Thanks Cathal.
The value of You tube: to help the children understand where we've come from and how we got old. Still priceless.
RIP Cathal, you absolute legend you. Ciao - goodbye.
It was fun to find out that one of your professors in uni played in such band :> (Nick Allum, drummer)
RIP Cathal Coughlan, ...
The nod after 'Paris is in India' always killed me!
RIP Cathal.

Of the whole Snub episodes this video was the highlight
I saw this once on tv about 25 years ago and it popped into my head for some reason and viola! Here it is
This is the first time I've seen this since I saw it on Snub TV.
'Get these dead bodies of my racetrack'!!!

Keep on rocking
I remember this very clip on telly and loved it. Of course i had it on one of my VHS compilations.
Remember this from the first time I saw it. There seemed to be a much healthier music scene then... sad it's gone
The music scene in Dublin is pretty good now I'd say. Lot's of interesting stuff and a good variety too.
face it, you’re an old idiot.

saw him live once wearing a t shirt emblazoned with the words f*ck f*ck f*ck on it. was the support act that night but was impressive.
He wore his "KEEP MUSIC EVIL" t-shirt when I saw them!
bloody brilliant!!!
Magnificent band and great song.
Still awesome.Used to go out with a cousin of Cathal`s - Lorraine.Hope she`s alive and well :-0
Did Thatcher really say : 'If a man uses public transport at the age of 30, he is a failure'?
+Jeremy Clapham She did unfortunately. Look what a narrow-minded old hag she was.
No, it's a myth
@David it seems rather suspicious that numerous quotes or attributions of Thatcher's now seemingly lack hard evidence....almost like her record has been cleansed.

It’s something Americans say. Busses there are only used by blacks and hispanics.

Just heard about his death. Only discovered his work recently in the last couple of years. Very sad news. RIP.
It was a deconsecrated synagogue off Brick Lane, London - I think it is still there
As Gurdieff would say,may he attain the kingdom of heaven!

I think this song is meant to be sarcastic as in reality only jerks don't want to take the bus because they think it's beneath them.
pure fucking gold
great guys: met them at JFK and they invited me to CBGBs
Fuckin A
Where is the video for this that had Cathal dressed as a homeless person, shouting the lyrics at passers by? I can't find it anywhere.
if you ever find it please post. did you ever hear him and Martin Stephenson's version of "let's call the whole thing off"? Wonderful.
I have that video on vhs tape somewhere in my vast collection of old tired tapes... brilliant song - went out and bought VIVA DEAD PONIES and VALHALLA AVENUE on the strength of this fabulous song.
If you haven't heard it, check out Cathal doing a song called OFFICER MATERIAL - It's a beautiful song that deserves far more people listening to it.
checking it out NOW. thanks EnosE...
