Thanks for watching Gavin - Fototripper Хобби
now THIS is why I watch vlogs. You've taught a new guy a thing with this one. I can read all the tutorials in the world about a subject, but seeing it done soaks in for me much better. Thanks Gavin!
More tutorials like that Gavin would be really Nice ! Thank you for sharing !
Did anyone else watch right to the end? LOL! Stuff happens! Great video! **saved** and subscribed!
one of the best ed blogs you have done
Awesome video, thank you for sharing your editing techniques!
Thanks for getting into the how to of your photos. Great job.
Great tutorial thanks so much for taking the time to put this together for us! Cheers.
Brilliant video Gavin, thank you. Enjoying all your blogs.
Thank you so much for sharing great tips. It's really helpful
My new favorite channel!❤️
Having GI distress while bingeing the back catalog one of my favorite vloggers, then hearing him admit to suffering the same bum trauma makes me like your channel even more, mate. Way to bond with your audience, Gavin!
Another awesome video.Great tutorial I'll gave to try that next time I'm photographing waterfall.
Great tip on taking different length exposures to reveal more detail in the water. I think you should do more videos where you include how you process them. I really enjoyed that. :-).
Thank you so much for this video and the work you do on youtube. It's been very helpful indeed! And so much FUN :)
Great video Gavin, explained in plain words and in a way you can follow, nice one 👍
Thanks Gavin, great tutorial...
I have recently subscribed to your channel. I watch Thomas Heaton often and a few others. I enjoy that you often include others in your videos and of course your humor! Not only do I get some very nice photography content, it's presentation is fun and entertaining. The instruction in this video was clear to the point complete enough to easily follow, yet didn't drag on, to me a winning combination. Thank you for your efforts and sharing your passion.
I’m loving these videos bud. Please keep them coming 🍺
Love your blend of humour and understandable training keep up the good work
Great video - really like your style. Beautiful image as well.
Cool video - this was helpful as I have used some techniques that are similar to what you describe here, but have not heard others discuss. I like the layering of photos and then erasing and blending the two images.
Awesome video and tips. Thanks
Great video... thanks for teaching me something new! Cheers!👍
I’m glad I found your channel. I watch a ton of landscape youtubers and yours is the best. You have great content that is fun to watch.
Thanks so much
Now I need to try this
this is beautiful Gavin!! always a fan of your images
Thanks love.
Excellent vlog.
class man, im just learning to use photoshop. these vlogs really help, so thank you, and keep up the amazing work.
Gavin, Came across your channel when watching Thomas Heaton visit with you guys in the Rockies. I like you work and your videos. Lots of energy . I will be a follower going forward. One last thing - great tip on the waterfall, I have had several photos of mushy waterfall so this video was very timely. Greetings from Newfoundland. Pat
Good Lesson Gavin, glad to find your channel... been looking at your work... very nice indeed! I live on the island (in Nanaimo) and love the awesome adventures to be had here in the West Coast . Look forward to following you and maybe get together for one of you adventures.
Cheers 🍻
Hi Gavin. One of the fun aspects of YT is time travelling to watch earlier episodes of a channel. Really enjoyed this Vlog but can also tell you I can see a lot of improvement over the last year. Like your work a lot so keep it up. Thanks for sharing!
Brilliant!!!
Cheers Andy
I will Have to give this a go with some recent shots and maybe my bear one thanks
Brilliant tutorial Cavin, confirms how I try to blend, so I know that I'm on the right track 😂
The waterfall on the other side of that drainpipe is quite nice as well. Glad I found your channel. Great stuff!

Excellent video thanks. Must try this technique next time to to Healey dell nature reserve
Great video and quite easy to follow. Really learned something from it and how you made a good image even better. Also were about on the island is this so that if I ever get back I might be able to find it. Cheers. Enjoy your videos with that Grumpy English chap.
THANKYOU
Learned something.. Thanks for the video ^_^
typical day on Vancouver Island! Liked the Waynes world takes. Thanks for this tutorial.
heheh thanks
@fototripper keep up the great work Gavin..... really enjoyed your explanation of the edit @richiejpphotography
Bloody hell you Yorkshire git... Stunning... I'm a bit of a waterfall junkie, but that was stunning. It's been pissing it down for a few days here in New Hampshire - got to get out over the weekend to a few of my local favourite falls. All the best - keep em coming. Going home to Liverpool and North Wales in a few weeks - even though some of the North Wales falls are brilliant, not sure I'll better your shots here...
Love this video, very informative .will have find these falls, can you share the location in more detail
I enjoyed the blending tutorial, thank you. What I enjoyed most was the placement of your hat when you arrived at the waterfall, you make me laugh 😂
It's the simple things.......
Really liked this. Have to find a waterfall.. :)
That awesome shot, very beautiful tutorial, but it can list down the setting and explain the photoshop in a more slowly manner, that will be good. Love it.
Thanks you so much... now I want to be a landscape photographer.... Need to find waterfalls in western germany...
I’m a new subscriber. Great stuff here. Really! Can’t believe you’re only at 1.6k subs!
Thanks man :)
@@fototripper You only had 1,600 subscribers just a year ago? You've come a long way my friend :-)
Hello Gavin, you are a Master at processing your images. You are an all-rounder who has a great grasp of the Art of Photography. If I had half the skills that you have I would be doing very well. I am alright at the image taking, but the mechanics processing my brain melts. Going on 67 years of age. Again thank you, for sharing your skills...
Watch this space for my very own online Fototripper Academy. I'll aim to teach in a way that doesn't melt your noggin.
@@fototripper we shall see Gavin, I have a lousy memory. But yes I shall look out for it....
Hey Gavin,
Great video! I love the waterfall videos! I also shoot waterfalls a lot and was wondering if you had any recommendations on rain boots? I’ve thought about getting a pair but don’t know what brands are good and if they are practical for hiking to waterfalls. Thanks!!
Great image .... l wouldn’t recommend the destructive workflow of the erase tool .... a layer mask allows for the same adjustments which could be further fine tuned at any time .... regardless your videos are bloody brilliant 👍😂♥️
Hi Gavin, I see people have already reamed you for using the eraser tool instead of masking. Here's a little tip to help when you're stacking your layers. If you hold down the shift key while dragging from one window to another the new layer will align perfectly with the original layer if they're both the same size. Thanks for all the great info and laugh out loud fun...cheers mate!
Enjoyed the video. Just wondered why you did not use a layer mask instead of the eraser. I like the texture you get with 1/8 s which would be my preference for fast water as well.
Did you consider taking the shot in one frame with a higher iso.
Terrific vlog, Gavin - I'm new to this processing lark so could you tell me whether I should put my raw files through Adobe camera raw before importing into Lightroom? Can you stack photo's in Lightroom (Classic) or does it have to be done in Photoshop? Thanks.
Also an islander in the Cowichan valley , were are these falls located? Enjoying your video's do you do group photo shoots
I use Raw Therapy on Linux and have been meaning to find out how to combine shots in that software. Must get round to it.
RT is very limited, but gloriously easy to use. GIMP is much more powerful software for combining photos, has all those fancy features like luminosity masking, yadda yadda... If you've gotten bored with RT, try Darktable for your raw development. Many more features than RT, such as masking and a large variety of processes you can run on your images.
If you're looking for a native Linux HDR program, I've been using Luminosity HDR for a couple weeks and have to say it's confusing AF. Lots of options, lots of potential results, but I'm not too sure which way is up yet. Like most linux software, it's powerful, but the interface is kind of trash.
1:53 Why is this shot played backwards??? Other than that, great photos and very useful video
Gavin, have you ever been to Sol Duc falls in Washington State? if not it’s a great opportunity for someone that loves waterfalls as much as you. I was there in 1994 but have not been back since. I shot the falls on film at the time and went for a classic view of the falls and then a view of the moss covered branches over the top of the falls. i think you would enjoy it.
I was there in October. Didn't get a good shot :(
Hey Gavmondo, when you've been back 'home' in the UK have you been to High Force and Low Force waterfalls? I've been a couple of times over the years and found that Low Force is most Trezmendous compared to it's bigger counterpart.
Wouldn't alt/option dragging the Blend If white slider in the top layer options be a faster way to fix the over exposed water?
it may work on some images but can look very unnatural at times. Give a try though, might work for you.
Could you say the real location. I’m headed to the island for 5 days tomorrow and would love to check this area out, but can’t find a drainpipe falls... loving you vids and tutorials man!
Awesome work and great result. Try using a mask and edit the mask to blend your images as opposed to erasing your original image. Makes it easier to revisit your edit and make adjustments later on. As your processing skills improve a few years down the track you may want to re-edit some of your previous photos. Will save you some time. If the image is complex then also try using luminosity masks if a manual edit is too hard. "LOOK AT THAT BUSINESS" < love it!!
I often use layer and luminosity masks Bruce but I'd rather do a complete re-edit than revisit an edit. From all the workshops that I've taught I still find that some people have difficulty with the concept of layer masks but they never have difficulty with the Erase tool. Besides, I've got to leave something to talk about in my upcoming online photography courses ;)
@@fototripper nice one. Love your work.
The eraser tool! Holy smokes! You may want to re-think that little nugget of destructive editing in favor of some good old fashioned masking. Once you erase those pixels they’re gone forever! This is easily one of the best photography channels on the Tube, so tuck that eraser into the bin of forbidden tools and let it collect dust along with film photography and streak-marked underwear. . .
Oh God forbid! The horror of destructive editing!!!!!!
@@fototripper If only I could destroy my taxes
great image.. good tutorial.. though I was suprised you used the eraser tool instead of layer masks....
Thanks. They are the same thing under a different name.
And :Image >adjustment instead of adjustment layer.
Wow , is it just me or at 1:53 is the water moving backwards?
Umm, thought you would use a layer mask to blend the water, but you used the eraser tool. Something a little different., would that be a destructive workflow?
Another great video :) I'd be tempted to use a mask rather than the eraser tool (as it's non destructive) but it doesn't change the excellent points being made here :) I would have loved to have seen where your focus points were for these shots (which i know you do in some of your other vids) as I can never seem to get that quite right :(
I prefer destructive editing

Hi Mate,
Fellow expat Pat here, down under in Perth Western Australia. Love the channel and the banter :)
Have you tried Lumenzia, It would better isolate your highlights. Updates are free, which is a bonus. He also responds to your emails if you get stuck.

@@pathogan4854 of course he did.
Why did you use the eraser tool and not a layer mask?
Gavin I would like to ask you what makes a person a professional photographer? Is it selling prints and Calendars or do you also need to teach? Cheers.
If you're broke, you're a professional landscape photographer.
What would have been the end result, if you had just generated an HDR out of the 2 or 3 exposures? Better or worse? I generally take that shortcut. Too bloody lazy, I suppose.
It might have been a good starting point and sometimes I do do that. But manually blending in certain parts from other exposures will always look more natural if done well.
At 1:56 what is that tripod mount ?????
OMG!! You should use masking and never an erasor
Really? Please, tell me more of your expert ways......
eraser??? seriously nooo use layer mask, it s far more powerful, eraser is a destrucitve tool you cant go backwards, with layer mask, you can do what you want, change your mind...
oh I'm very familiar with how layer masks work
GOD PLEASE!!! Use masks instead of the eraser tool. Non destructible workflow FTW ;)
This is digital photography. There is no such thing as destructive......
@@fototripper Well, all the parts you erased are gone. Sure...they will be there in the other file, but it makes no sense to switch between files if it's not needed. So...no reason NOT to go with masks, as the results are exactly the same. But masks gives you the benefit of not erasing actual pixels from your image but hides them.
You know I'm right, man. Just use masks ;) It's better to teach others this too ;)
