There is something very special about this performance. I can't put my finger on it, but it's not just the tremendous playing, it's the atmosphere in the room... as if the audience is aware that they are in the presence of greatness and are hearing something truly awe-inspiring for the first time, but before Planxty had become a big name. All the postings from this performance are among my favourites on RUclips.
4 of the best musicians. Liam Og O'Flynn has a knack which not many folk musicians have when they play a medley of tunes, he can fit them all together with an almost invisible link. I'd also love to see what became of the lady's drawing at 1min 36ish!!
Liam Og O'Flynn provided a generation with excellent uileannn piping. He is "at one" with the instrument. I can never find Cunla on you tube. One of the best from Well below the valley album. thanks for posting.
We should keep writing tunes. New ones. Our youth are hungry for the trad soul. Keep playing everyone. And Planxty were magnificent in their day. Here's to Hubert who introduced me.A good tune would be the Brexit reel / Hard border etc
Speaking as a piper who's mostly occupied trying to learn some of his extensive articulation, I longed for such string players many years before Planxty appeared. We used to put up with 4-5 conventional folk music chords by pianos or guitars, which is a serious disservice to the drones and the quick-changing trad melodies. If I had to choose between gaining more of O'Flynn's skills and that kind of accompaniment, it'd be a tough choice.
Any video I see Christy playing bodhran, he is only using his hand. The only video I saw Donal also playing bodhran (Bean Phaidin), he is also only using his hand. They both appear to be tipper-free. :-)
I totally agree with you, his work on the early Planxty albums was excellent and I am a great lover of these albums, What I was trying to express was that his two albums pre Planxty were pretty awful and his singing style was terrible, high pitched and nasally and that on that basis he was very lucky to have met the other members of that brilliant group and to be able to play with them
...Just look at the young audience, all sitting on the floor, legs crossed and crammed into one another. Was this at a school or something?? I should think so, since I hate the idea of going to such a concert and be sat on the floor with everyone else, I'd rather be stood up and dancing... Yet you'd only be able to do Irish dancing to music like this, so I'd try my best not to kick anyone's legs!!
3 great musicians at work and traditional music's Ringo Starr on the drum and by that I mean that he was luckiest man alive to get a chance to play and sing with them because he is terrible at both
Jack Fletcher christy is a great musician. Planxty would not be the same without him, I've heard liam say repeatedly that christy was a driving force behind planxty and without him they wouldn't have gotten where there are now.
Powerful peaceful music
I can't take this album out of my car stereo and this medley is the main reason why. there is no getting enough.

Yup. Like the guy at 23 seconds. That’d be me if I had been there.
This is Planxty at their best. Incredible talent.
Great music, great comments, great post! *****
Thank you! I never thought of The Gatehouse Maid with that kind of backing before. Brilliant.

Maith thu, lads 😊. Bual amach é
@Peramelemorphia
You said it.
If Liam O'Flynn is playing the pipes, it doesn't matter what's going on with the non melody section.
Oops. Christy was using a tipper in 'The Frost is All Over' video. My bad. ok.. he MOSTLY uses just his hand.

Wow, what perfection, stunning performance. Talking about stunning! who is the babe at 2.59 to 3.05?. She is beautiful:).
Patrick (Ireland).
Does anyone know where the venue was held?...I thought it as maybe in UCD but there are a few kids there
And then Donal sails away on his giant bouzouki haha
where was this?
Didn't he sing "Cunla" on the "Well Below the Valley" album? Not entirely terrible to the ear of this piper.
Estoy de acuerdo con muntoidprime.
@MusicMadGuy2010
oy, looks a little hefty to me... ;-)
