Jesus man! when Christy Moore lifts that bhodran at the end it's the essence of perfection, a stunning allround performance from the one and only Planxty. Patrick (Ireland).
2:49 Andy forgets the words, 2:50 Donal instantly realises, 2:52 Donal turns and says 'Witness' to Andy, 2:54 Andy sings the last verse, awesomeness is resumed.
Andy had made a hames of the words well before that and seemed to have given up. Donal was mouthing the words to himself after Andy stopped singing. They carried on with the instrumental break, and THEN Donal prompted Andy as he realised he needed it! Great professionalism- nothing was obvious unless you really know the song.
My dear friend Steve Myles gave me Planxty Live 2004 a few years back. Since then the 2 most played albums (out of a few) are Kind of Blue and Planxty Live . My favourite memory is Christmas Eve '97 on the way to a the top of big mounain in North Africa singing various renditions to my fellow climbers. The pity is I left Ireland in '89 with no real appreciation of my musical heritage.
The mandolin arrangment is awesome with the two. I sometimes try to sing this at trad session but I always forget words. It's beautiful, especially the ending.
Interesting that Planxty music never seems dated, we don't realize that the verse had to be missed, because it was 34 years ago...still my favorite planxty song..so powerful, yet they make it look so easy....GREAT!
Planxty was an will always be an amazing composition of talent and imagination. The composition of the obtruse instruments is amazing. It is a sound that resonates and vibrates the soul more than the ear. It penetrates the heart and spirit. I love planxty's work and will be forever indebted to their genious.
Andy Irvine does a nice job on this old English folk tune, collected in Herefordshire. He would have learned it from Martin Carthy or the Steeleye Span album of 1970, which is also worth checking out.
This fine effort forges naught but a lusty desire to hear more by this marvellous group of musicians. Greetings to one and all from Jarrahnut in wonderful Western Australia.
Hi everybody. I have seen Planxty once in my life. It was in Reims (France) in 1976, the band was reduced to two original members, Liam and Andy, and Paul Brady. This very evening, Liam had flu, and he was nearly crimson under the spots, but they gave a very good show anyway. I just missed Christie and Donald, despite Brady real talent !
That performance makes me want to take a huge shit on Mumford and Sons or Bright Eyes or any other poser boyband who thinks they are making folk music.
Dae Dalus I dont think anyone, including Mumford himself, thinks they are making folk music. Just because a band has a banjo player does not mean they are attempting to do folk or bluegrass.
A great song of passion, woman scorned and you can feel it in the baazooki and mandolin and beautiful Irish traditional music with a kick!! I love ye lads- brill.
No, he was forced to repeat the previous verse's last two stanzas, and was forced to keep silent the rest of the 4th verse. (Ireland was _still_ a theocracy masquerading as a democracy in those days, 1972.) Years later, during the reunion, he was able to sing the offending verses.
Amazing footage. Very rare. It would be great to see andy on the late late show these days. I always wonder why he doesn't seem to get the coverage he's still up there with the best of them
Planxty were innovative with Irish music - the secondary instrument dances around the main instrument - that combined with Andy Irvine's etheral voice .... it puts you in another world
@SAINTARGENTUM777 Exactly what I was thinking! I never knew Planxty untill only recently when my driving instructor recommended me them, and honestly, I can't think of a single group, band or artist in the world that can really surpass them. They are like miniture king Davids!
so trippy, so dreamy, just marvellous. Please check out all Planxty material. this band fused trad Irish folk with psychedelics in a very important way
planxty and ceoltoiri chualann rewrote the whole group playing of irish music. the chieftains bothy band de danann ceoltoiri laighean clannad continued to be inventive and innovative. well done.
As I watch this today, The day Paddy Moloney is buried, Liam passed away a few years, Tony McMahon a few days ago, what a loss to our music,, these great musicians
Amazing!!! Although I've been always listening to PLANXTY since '70s and know majority of their songs and instrumentals, I always finish with The Blacksmith... Far the best performance of this song of all...
And that is how you do it. Jeez a powerful sound. Looking to play this tune, some versions are cringe worthy and this is aspirational to me. A bloody high bar but has an unaffected honesty - probably the love of the tune and story. Thanks for posting.
Isn't it extraordinary that they had to censor some of the words. Seems there were some thing you couldn't even imply on the Late Late Show. "don't you remember when you lay beside me You said you'd marry me, and not deny me. If i said I'd marry you, it was only to try you So bring your witness love, and I'll not deny you."
The unique instruments are always a hallmark of great music. Check out Waverly Consort's Renaissance Christmas album. The instruments had to be crafted due to they are from the 14th and 15th centuries.
Jesus man! when Christy Moore lifts that bhodran at the end it's the essence of perfection, a stunning allround performance from the one and only Planxty.
Patrick (Ireland).
Couldn't agree more Pat!
He's so great! Interesting to see him play with a tipper!
Absolute magical sound ,Andy has a brilliant unique voice
He does... my favourite Irish folk singer.
I have yet to see, a better version !!!
Best Irish folk band ever and that includes the Chieftains and the Dubliners. Absolutely phenomenal talent.
Great but Not better than the Bothy band. Nothing beats Matt Molloy and Tommy Peoples in a band, Nothing.
you can't say at this level anyone is better than anyone ....
I'm with John and the Bothy Band.
2:49 Andy forgets the words, 2:50 Donal instantly realises, 2:52 Donal turns and says 'Witness' to Andy, 2:54 Andy sings the last verse, awesomeness is resumed.
2013 Paul Higham stays in on New Years Eve and comments on RUclips videos.
rhun llwyd
Deal with it
he didn't forget. He was not allowed to sing that verse on TV as it was deemed to risque for 1970's Ireland
Andy always forgets the words, it's part of his charm
Andy had made a hames of the words well before that and seemed to have given up. Donal was mouthing the words to himself after Andy stopped singing. They carried on with the instrumental break, and THEN Donal prompted Andy as he realised he needed it!
Great professionalism- nothing was obvious unless you really know the song.
We are so lucky to be able to hear such wonderful music.
Yes well said. That is why I am in a Lotto pool twice a week :) I have solid plans on what I'm going to do when I hit the lottery!!!
What talented band the music is out of this world. I just discovered them a year ago.
The mandolin arrangment is awesome with the two. I sometimes try to sing this at trad session but I always forget words. It's beautiful, especially the ending.
That’s a true master class....their determination and passion for the love of Irish music leaves me breathless
The song is traditional English.
3:58
Possibly the greatest moment in music history
You can hear someone from the crowd shouting out of sheer excitement haha.
Completely agree. Liam Og O’Flynn RIP.
Interesting that Planxty music never seems dated, we don't realize that the verse had to be missed, because it was 34 years ago...still my favorite planxty song..so powerful, yet they make it look so easy....GREAT!
That ending though 👏👏👏💚
One of the best songs with Planxty :)
my gosh.... killer tune, awesome band!!!!
Perfection. Really doesn't get any better. Christy looks younger now than he did then. Donal was a gem.
Planxty was an will always be an amazing composition of talent and imagination. The composition of the obtruse instruments is amazing. It is a sound that resonates and vibrates the soul more than the ear. It penetrates the heart and spirit. I love planxty's work and will be forever indebted to their genious.
I keep returning to this performance. It's just so enthralling!
Absolute brilliance. A band at the top of their game.
I'd give a million dollars to play by the side of such brilliant musicians as planxty.
Here again! What a band! What a performance!!!
Awesome clip! Planxty truly were a supergroup.
I just missed Christie and Donald, despite Brady real talent
!
Every song gives me chills.
The best Music, made in the traditional Ireland. Thanks Planxty.
Gruß from Germnay
Amazing. 3 bars of 4/4, then one of 3/4 except every 3rd time through. Brilliant song.
Just came back here again after a while of being away. My god, how may times can u hit the Like button. Lads like this make you proud to be Irish.
+Trevor Hanhilammi though Mumford & Sons can do some fine Bluegrass if called for. They just don't, because mainstream media mandates something else
Dae Dalus fucking beautiful! amazing
thanks for puttin this video up . its real irish music at its best, never forget where yee come from . cheers.
The Best - May the road rise up to meet you, Liam O'Flynn
Gosh, what a good way of putting it. I play this song over and over again.
they were the best group in ireland ever ever ever
Saw andy play this solo at a gig few months ago.
Fuckin amazing musician altogether.
great support from Donal at 2:52 for the lost words from Andy, cool!
A great song of passion, woman scorned and you can feel it in the baazooki and mandolin and beautiful Irish traditional music with a kick!! I love ye lads- brill.
It's an English song.
We owe a lot to these guys, and to RUclips and the 'poster' - I mean, how else are we going to get to to see this vintage magic?
Had the great pleasure of seeing Andy Irvine a couple of times....and it WAS magic! :)
my hero, bouzouki hero, Donal Lunny :) What an awesome performance.
Unbelievable Genius.
Never heard it better.
THANKS A LOT FOR POSTING!
my life is richer now!
The ending of this song is SO INTENSE!!!
+Ben van Vooren Really? Fascinating. How do you know?
Beorn bad ass fuck
That ending is fing electrifying!
Great for ever, Donal helps Andy finding Lyrics again, cool!
Splendid piece of folk music !! Phalaina
great stuff
love the playing of donal and andy with bouzouki und mandolin
Loved everything by Planxty. Incredible group.
Just pure magic. Legends that will live forever.
Think Andy forgot the words. Still one of the greatest moments of Irish tv. Ever.
I always wonder why he doesn't seem to get the coverage he's still up there with the best of them
Paul Brady is from Northern Ireland (Strabane to be precise), Andy Irvine was actually born in London and then moved back to Ireland to be a musician.
one of those tunes you wish would never end
Magnificent!
I love this.
They look great too.
Irish folk music is immortal!!!
Planxty were innovative with Irish music - the secondary instrument dances around the main instrument - that combined with Andy Irvine's etheral voice .... it puts you in another world
Wow, so good to be able to watch these chaps at work... Virtuoso Stuff !
Never get sick of seeing it!!!
I agree. Though this (The Blacksmith) is an English song.
This is brilliant. Thanks for posting.
I love that you spotted this, Luke Kelly also forgot or repeated lyrics before he got sick, even the greats are human.
The interplay between the mandolin and bouzouki. That was new then. Magic then and now.
I've just "rediscovered" them having heard them played over and over as a child.
Shivers down my spine. Thank for sharing this video!
@SAINTARGENTUM777 Exactly what I was thinking! I never knew Planxty untill only recently when my driving instructor recommended me them, and honestly, I can't think of a single group, band or artist in the world that can really surpass them. They are like miniture king Davids!
Classic Planxty a forever performance -thanks
so trippy, so dreamy, just marvellous. Please check out all Planxty material. this band fused trad Irish folk with psychedelics in a very important way
Donal and Andy are pure magic together.
Wow, amazing performance. I really wish there was more of their stuff from this era still available. Its truely amazing.
absolutely beautiful - one of the greatest groups of all time
Cool! Best irish folk band ever ever ever!!!
Exceptional artists playing amazingly well !! Phalaina
magic group, magic music. Absolutely immortal.
planxty and ceoltoiri chualann rewrote the whole group playing of irish music. the chieftains bothy band de danann ceoltoiri laighean clannad continued to be inventive and innovative. well done.
Breathtaking
the outro is so sad and powerful
As I watch this today, The day Paddy Moloney is buried, Liam passed away a few years, Tony McMahon a few days ago, what a loss to our music,, these great musicians
Have put this on many times when coming home late at night (well oiled). Magic.
Amazing!!! Although I've been always listening to PLANXTY since '70s and know majority of their songs and instrumentals, I always finish with The Blacksmith... Far the best performance of this song of all...
This is the stuff I cut my teeth on. The 70's was real music, not spin.
A great Group!
Amazing...
What a great song....first time I ever heard this. Reminds me a bit of "John Barleycorn must die" by Traffic
And that is how you do it. Jeez a powerful sound. Looking to play this tune, some versions are cringe worthy and this is aspirational to me. A bloody high bar but has an unaffected honesty - probably the love of the tune and story. Thanks for posting.
Great version. No mistakes
Extraordinary. Thanks for sharing.
Isn't it extraordinary that they had to censor some of the words. Seems there were some thing you couldn't even imply on the Late Late Show.
"don't you remember when you lay beside me
You said you'd marry me, and not deny me.
If i said I'd marry you, it was only to try you
So bring your witness love, and I'll not deny you."
Wonderful, so talented 👏 💚
Phenomenal -- as always!
Wow, these may not be popular instruments to most people, but these guys can play. That was beautiful!
The unique instruments are always a hallmark of great music. Check out Waverly Consort's Renaissance Christmas album. The instruments had to be crafted due to they are from the 14th and 15th centuries.
unadulterated magic.... imagine sitting listening to this live......
in 4.o1 minutes, when uilleann piper do his entrance alone, woooooow!!the world stop turning at the rhythm of his fingers,it´s really awesome!
superb. even makes forgetting the words entertaining.
an all-time classic.
great!!!!!!no words
It's an ENGLISH folk song, first collected by Vaughn Williams, the classical composer.
It's Irish dudes playing it and owning the shit
The best celtic voice of all time. For me at least.
Him or Paul Brady, imo
@@bosmith2587 Him.
One of the finer moments in Irish music.
How the Late Late engineer did not manage to bollix up the sound is a mystery though.
THE REAL THING!
planxty is real folk music also a note if you love planxty you will love the bothy band also both brilliant at irish folk music listen and enjoy....
_And_ led by Dónal Lunny himself :)
WOW WOW WOW WOW My God!!!
Left to right:
Irish bouzouki, mandolin, uilleann pipes. Christy Moore on the far right plays a bodhran at the end.
AND a harmonium as well.
I love this, thanks ! :o)
