Realigning the skull after a head post mortem

  • In this video we bring some older footage together to answer the question posed by a mother after her son's post mortem.
    Unfortunately, sometimes after the investigations and pathology are complete, aesthetic details may require some work before the family can view their loved one. Often the mortician will need to remove stitches and realign the skull to make the deceased ready for a viewing. We hope revisiting this topic helps answer your questions.

    In the States, for religious reasons, my DNR states that I am not to be autopsied under any circumstance. Scans and/or X-rays are acceptable if needed, but an autopsy is not. I’m curious if Aus also honors conditions of that sort.

      In the UK there is no choice if the Coroner requires it - they will normally expedite to allow prompt burial.
      Here in Indonesia an exam is rarely carried out except in unlawful killing, and even then it may be protested. In an accident or sudden death almost never. Many unlawful deaths go undetected.

    I am so sorry for the parents and loved ones who go through these tragic losses. I keep them in my warmest thoughts.
    On a lighter topic, how did you two ladies meet, become friends and decide to do this wonderful and informative video chat/show and tell? Much respect to both of you in your careers! I am a barber/stylist in the US and have done many clients and their family’s final ‘do. It has never bothered me going into the funeral homes at night and working on someone. I talk to them quietly and tell them who in the family I’ve spoken to, how much they are loved and how much they are already missed. (Sometimes I prefer the ones who don’t talk back or put their fingers in their hair while I’m trying to work).
    You ladies are so wonderful! Thanks for sharing your time and knowledge!

      We have done a video on how we met. We met at our local parkrun (as we are both runners) about 11 years ago now. We just seem to get along and did lots of running events together with our husbands and just grew from there. It was Trish's idea for the channel, she is an ex journalist and was going to write a book on my work and story but instead thought it would be easier to talk about it on a vlog. So here we are talking about it 😉❤️❤️

I stumbled across a video a couple weeks ago featuring Bill Edgar ( The coffin confessor) and as a curious Canadian, I was wondering if your mortuary has ever had to deal with him. I’m unaware of us having anything like him here in Canada.

      Hi thank you again for your kind words and support.
      He is from our area but never met him or had him turn up at any of the funerals we have held. I have heard from other funeral homes in the area that he's been to one or two of their services.
      We keep thinking maybe we should try and interview him but we just don't agree with what he does. He also has a side line in accommodation, renting out coffin/casket for a night. I put the link below from the local news about it...what ever next 🙄
      Take care ❤️❤️

    More and more you see a deceased body needing to be kept for a longer period of time due to forensic testing or suchlike. I’m curious as to how long is the maximum that a body can be kept before it needs to be buried/cremated? Have you had any situations where you’ve been concerned that testing or postmortem etc is going to take much longer than you feel is ok? Sorry for the essay! 🙈😆 love to you both from Geordie land 😁😎🫶 xxxxx

Or would you just go straight forward and clean up after you've closed? Also, what if the eyes are taken out? Would it be the same process?

    Question: My brother was taken to the mortuary I delivered at. They said we could see him before cremation. We arrived and no blood was seeping after his autopsy. At the end of our visit I did see some blood coming from his skull incision.
    Do you think they tried to put something on that to stop the bleeding before our visit?

    • @Areyoudyingtoknow
      @Areyoudyingtoknow  4 месяца назад +3

      Hello, yes I imagine they would have tried to clean up the incision area with a cauterizing solution thinking it would last the viewing time. However if you don't stop the bleeding inside the head it will just very slowly keep leaking out. Sorry you had to see that. Take good care as always 🤗❤️❤️

    You said that if the person has very short hair you would do the baseball suture then put tape over the sutures. Wouldn’t the people see the tape?? If it’s a person wearing a baseball hat or something like that but what happens if they aren’t wearing a hat because that wouldn’t look normal to the people who are viewing the body because the person never wore hats. How would you make it so they couldn’t see the tape??

    • @Areyoudyingtoknow
      @Areyoudyingtoknow  3 месяца назад +1

      Hi, the family always knows an autopsy has taken place. So I would explain that due to having no hair or short hair and the family don't want a hat on I will say you will see tape across the top of the head this is to cover the sutures from the autopsy it is skin coloured so blends evenly to the skin and doesn't stand out to much so it looks less traumatic. Families are usually ok with that. ❤️❤️

    So, ladies, I’ve told you of my son-in-law. After he was hit by the truck….some of his brains were coming out of his nose. How is that handled, because it was “ok” at his viewing & service. How is it for you, getting young people’s bodies? Thank you.

    • @Areyoudyingtoknow

      Hi, you would have probably seen our videos on aspirating the body, by using a trocar to draw out gas and fluid, we can do this also to the brain area. It's a very small trocar that fits into a small cavity we naturally have at the top of our nose, this will draw out all the fluid and any lose debris from the accident, then it will be packed with a small amount of cotton. Hope that helps, take good care ❤️❤️
