    I have painted with nitro cellulose lacquer also. I can see why they used it back in the 50s because it's very easy to work with and it dries for the next coat very fast. I know it continues to cure for a very long time afterwards, but the cancer causing agents in nitro cellulose is reason to not use it very often. That nitro texture you are talking about is great! Awesome guitar! I never heard of the freezing technique. Cool!

    Don't know if you'll see this comment but I feel that I need to express myself.
    Thanks for the amazing background story about how your dad brought you to the music store. My dad did the exact same thing to me. I was like 8 when he bought my first acoustic and I started getting lessons at the local music school (I'm from sweden btw). A couple of years went by and when I was 13 I started disliking my teacher (he was so damn angry all the time and shouted about any mistake you made on the guitar so I switched to the electric guitar with a different teacher).
    Once again my father brought me to the music store and bought the cheap guitar/amp kit's that you could get (actually a black strat). and a couple of years later he bought me a superstrat (ibanez). I still have all these guitars because the memories and the personal value for me is stronger than getting rid of them.
    Don't want to write a wall here but I just want to thank you, brought a tear to my eye thinking about my father and how he not even once forbid me to play the guitar despite the fact that we didn't have much money at that time. I am sharing in your sadness as you remember your loved ones, may them rest in peace! Greatings from Sweden

      Emiroj, thank you so much for writing this. It is an amazing thing to have family that know what music means to people like us. Playing, making music, having that communal experience of jamming with friends just for the beauty of playing.
      And you are right, those guitars of yours are priceless.
      There's no amount of money more important than what we are meant to do as artists and musicians.
      Thank you again for listening and watching. Glad to meet a fellow traveler in this way. 😊🙏

    I just bought a 2001 squire p bass because I gave my original squire to a friend and then had a falling out. I really regret getting rid of that bass. I can’t wait to refinish it to look like that bass with all the damage a 7th grader did to a guitar.

    When you put the guitar in the freezer for two hours, did it take time for the aging cracks in the cellulose to show up or does it happen immediately. Can’t decide if I want to do this because it seems as if a real aging nitro finish has a little bit more erratic aging cracks, maybe since the freezer is so sudden it creates long cracks? What are your thoughts ?

    • @breilly66
      @breilly66  2 года назад +1

      Typically thr expansion and contraction creates checking that is pretty bang on to what you'd get just by waiting.
      Sometimes you've got to leave it in there overnight. But yes, it'll kick start the process and about 3 weeks in you'll start to see the fine lines.
      Also.... a bit of pencil graphite ground to dust will nicely highlight the lines. As when we see checking, some is textural in reflection but mostly we see the contaminants and dirt really.
      The pencil graphite brings the look out. Or, wood stain. Wiped on and off almost immediately.
      Hope this helps! And thank you dearly for watching. 😊

    Nice action. My guitartech made me a solid telecaster spruce body, he said its a 2-component "nitro" laquer. Im not an expert, but i realise that its pretty soft, even after 2 months after spraying. You can literary leave your finger nail mark in a surface when you push harder. Is that normal? Should i spray maybe one coat of"something" to protect that fragile surface?

    • @breilly66
      @breilly66  5 месяцев назад

      That is typical of nitro. Poly has a structure to it. Like fiberglass over a foam core surfboard.
      But nitro is more of a tinted sealant. Where the timbers yield is still a thing and impressions CA. Be made very easily.
      You could shoot nitro clear over it to try and build a "fullerplast" finish if you wanted it to be a bit more substantial?

      @@breilly66 Do i need to do a sand work bofore that final nitro coat? I still want to do a relic light job after that, it will not be super hard, right?

    • @breilly66
      @breilly66  5 месяцев назад +1

      @bertonedes Yes. You can use a light scotchbrite pad instead. This will do less leveling and will create a good bonding surface. Just a light hit to knock the shine off. Should be pretty straightforward. ✊️

    Hello, i dont know if i noticed it trough the video. So after final layer of nitro you wet sand and polish after how long time ? Because there some kind of a rule that you need to wait about 30 days to start final sanding and buffing => freezing to get those checking... So whats the correct way. I just finished spraying and i dont want to ruin something. Thank you for your advice :) Gorgeous guitar by the way !

      I try and wait about a week. But 3 is a sure shot. I have hit it as early as 20 hours later but it was more of an open grain finish so glass wasn't necessary. So, 1 to 3.

      Greatly appreciated! 🙏
      Regarding coats....
      Any layer for me, be it a base or a topcoat with color.
      I go by eye. Every guitar has intricate turns that get better coverage when you change your position from every coat. I start with a dusting. A misting really. This will enable the solvents to etch into the surface while keeping evaporation fast. This minimizes "fish eye-ing" and gives you a better blend if you relic/fade later. Second coat you're looking for even coverage regardless of surface texture. Keeping it light but going for the hue /color correctness.
      I do 3 or 4 light coats this way.
      Then one or 2 (maybe) wet coats. This is where you're shooting for a gloss (but not a run). So hit it light, wait 5 mins for it to gel as a base, then hit it with a wet coat to act as the final planed surface.
      Nitro loves sunshine during and after shooting. As the viscosity thins with the temp rise, the solvent evap is quicker (less time for distortion) and it sands cleaner quicker.

    Thanks so much for sharing your story and techniques. I'm working on my second build which is an attempt of a relic copy of a 68-70 era strat. I had a question about getting that cool checking pattern in nitro. Does it work best if you expose to the freezer soon after coating or can it be later after curing? I dont blame you for not sanding to the bare wood. It's the biggest pain in the ass to sand around the horns and everything. Not worth doing unless it's a heavy poly coat as you don't want poly under nitro.
