People hating on Tektro are missing the connection that Tektro makes TRP brakes. They know what they are doing. They're also just smart enough to put up a budget line for entry level or big box bikes.
I've had many issues with TRP's dhr's evo, whatever people paid to shill them say lol. Of course it's under warranty (myself I just returned both set to the retailers) but failure rate counts for something I guess, I'm a two out of two 😂 Also had issues with a set of tektro Orion 4p that came OEM on a bike, they lasted 2 Mt Tremblant run before leaking from the pistons ...
@@dennisyoung4631not that great to be honest, even when they work properly, they have superb modulation but raw power is on the weak side, much like the hope E4, good news is they are 1/4 the price of the hopes 😂
Great little run down guys, its surprising when you actually put things to the test what comes out on top and what is in the running. I love your real time tests its spot on and much better than running with the crowd like so many other people do well done for some proper the way it is truth testing awesome stuff guys this is how things should be done well done guys a breath of fresh air guys
So glad y'all uploaded this video, why, cause my Wolf-Tick (Clone) $228 Walmart Axum budget built parts are being Ebay'd to the house, got forks, peddles, Drop-Post and stim, would've had bars but this Hurricane that visited us delayed the order. Now I can choose brakes after watching y'all video. Next will be a crank set, I'm thinking about installing a 2X being that I live in Florida ! Thanks guys. 😏👍
My bike came with Shimano MT 501 2 piston brakes and they've worked great. The lever for the rear developed a leak which actually sprayed brake fluid on my head tube, so I was able to get a great deal on a Shimano Deore lever. I like the feel of the Deore lever pull, so when and if I replace the rest of my brakes it will be with a full Deore set....maybe even going as far as a set of 4 piston calipers.
Yes, overall, those Shimano Mt200 work well. I may have to look into those Tektro brakes next time. Often Tektro uses Shimano compatible pads, so getting pads is easy. My brother has Tektro hydro brakes, I don't know what model, they just keep working after 10 years.
Hi, I'm a new subscriber, and I can't believe what I'm looking at, That Bmx banner on your work bench is the same banner I used to see at BMX Grand national races back in the late 70's and early 80's, WOW! that brings back some of my BMX racing days of back then, pretty cool!.
Hey brother, welcome to the #wolfticknation! Appreciate the sub and yes!! That banner is RAD!! Actually a banner from the movie 💪 Glad it brought back some memories!
I ran the Shimano MT200 brakes (180 front, 160 rear rotors) down Mike's Night Out (300 meters of decending, 35% max grade, Revolution Enduro National Championship) in Gypsum Colorado. I survived the decent, but both rotors were rainbow colored and made a pinging sound similar to how a truck exhaust sounds when cooling down. If you're riding any sustained decents steeper than 20-25%, find some brakes that will give you more control and confidence. Riding is more fun when you thrive instead of just survive.
After seeing this, I'm definitely ordering a set of those xtech cable actuated brakes for my Ardor. For $40 bucks, it has to be a drastic improvement to the wimpy mechanicals on it now.
I have Aurigas on my all day ride and they are flawless the last three years. The only thing is you have to let the air out of the reservoir once in a while....easy
My Optic came with MT420 4 piston brakes which are great combined with 203/180 rotors and metal pads. What I hated about the 420s were the levers but that was a $50 fix getting the M6100 levers with the same caliper. Quick gravity bleed and have been great all summer long. My old upgraded 1999 Stumpjumper has the MT200 brakes on the front and those have been great. I guess I'm a Shimano fan LOL
A lil late to the party here, but try some mt200 calipers with slx/xt/Deore levers & you will be really impressed. As you say the stock levers are soft but trust me when I say change to some decent levers & theyre as good as my Sram guide R's easily
Great timing!!! i'm shopping brakes on 2 new builds for the winter. I added the 2 tektros you recommended to my list. Also considering the ZTTO M840 4 piston sets - they look pretty cool, not many reviews yet tho....
Just curious... everyone that tries these seem to love them when they install them - especially at the price. The issue is that there are SOOOO many failures and videos about the same issue - they start leaking. Yeah, you can get another one cheap, but who wants to take the chance of loosing your braking due a leak developed. They need to put a double O-Ring on the piston seal (might help). Anyway you can do a follow-up after good bedding and possibly with ceramic pads? Or can you verify with the manufacturer if this problem has been addressed and/or fixed and how? Thanks for the great videos!!!
Grandma should have been chilling on the coach with y’all !! You asking for coffee & how grandmas are on it remind me of mine. My twin and I were 12 and she still wouldn’t let us get our own milk !! She hand & footed us like crazy!! All we had to say was a “Mimiiiiii” and she’d be right there !! They don’t last forever so yell coffee again to check on her !!!
😁😁❤ You are absolutely right! Grandma is just like yours was, she would get upset if she knew I had to get my own coffee!! We look forward tk seeing yall this weekend. Much Love
My Giant Talon came with those Tektros 285 and yes they are good. My brother borrowed them and I think for a year he used it now my kid have them and they still work perfectly well. No wonder Giant and Trek use them because they are good brakes. I upgraded to the MT 420 4 pistons and been using them for 3 years now I with no problem. They have been through trails a lot and that on/off stopping power really came in handy multiple times. I'm planning to upgrade to the M6100 since l'm using the same gs but man these 420's are still good.
I would think it is OK to do a wheelie with a budget fork. As long as everything is tight lol. But if you get used to wheelies on a heavy stock coil fork, remember when you upgrade an air fork its gonna be very different!! Lol
I have been running zooms for 2 years and other than one lever developing a leak earlier this season I have really been impressed. I have a bike I am building that I want to keep the mechanical discs so the x techs might be something I pick up
Nice brake showdown! I have the shimano MT201 brakes on my new polygon D5 they are awesome!! I like the zoom Xtech cable activated brakes but I had 3 fail on me already they last like one year or less and oil always leaks out by the rubber boot from the inner seal.
Add the Shimano Deore BL-M6100 brake levers to those 420 rotors and you will get more modulation than any of those other brakes, and with just as much power. They're like $35 on eBay and 45 on Amazon.
I have the Mt 200 on my bike. The only negative thing I can say about them is the back of the levers are sharp. I haven’t lost any skin but don’t like how they feel if I bump them. I’m riding with fingerless gloves.
Get some of those rubber grip things that Seth bike hacks showed off. Trust me they look weird at first but man do they actually feel great. I have them on my mt200's and I will never not run them again
These are The Tick's favorites for what they are and that's not always the best. It's kind of like the Hony Badger tires we tested, scored really high, but The Tick wasn't a huge fan of them for whatever reasons. Hope this clears it up a little.
Hi WT, did you guys test all the brakes with the same pads (brand, type)? I'm wondering how much of the difference is actually due to the brake caliper itself and how much to the pads. I have tektros on my cannondale trail 5 (their budget entry level mtb) which aren't 1-finger brakes (more like 2) but after the pads wore down and I replaced with them with aftermarket organic pads, it was like night and and difference. Much more initial bite and better feeling modulation to the point I can almost stop 1-finger. Since then I have experimented switching out with sintered and also semi-metallics and have to say they all have noticeably different stopping characteristics (bite, warm-up period, wet-weather, fade, etc). Love your videos btw~
Hey Sky, thanks for the comment brother. Now the brakes were all tested with there stock brake pads. We understand that different compounds make differences but wanted to show "scientifically" what everyone should expect! 🤣🤣
The only thing i don't like with mt200 is the lever steel and overtime it will rust. If you're going for a budget shimano non series just go with mt201 with alloy levers.
I wish I could of found the MT200 brakes when I purchased brakes for my Axum DP. I went with Zoom HB-875 after about 2 weeks of looking. The right leaked a ton of fluid out when my kid set her bike against mine and it was leaning on the brake lever. I bled them and added fluid still not 100%. I have seen the MT200s on Ebay recently for $51 and almost bought them.
Another awesome vid. Great info. I know you really test brakes. I've been into e-bikes since 2017 & watched the HB100 mechanical hydraulic hybrids jump in price, specifically because they're popular for e-bikes. You're absolutely right about them being an easy upgrade without giving up the stock motor cut-off levers. (There are magnetic cut-off attachements for standard brake levers or complete hydraulic kits with motor cut-off levers). I hope you start looking at just some pads. I know that pads can make a huge difference in even the worst brakes. Would be great to know the best pads so we know what to use when the pads go on the Tektro M-285s.
im buying them for my dualtron scooter since the jak mechanicals are just junk. Cant trust brakes that barely stop me at 15 to stop me at 40mph. I also like that they have color options. I didnt want to go full hydraulic since i just got the scooter so it gives me a good options to keep it mostly stock but be able to stop. I also noticed alot of scooters are starting to use them as stock brakes instead of mechanicals.
Shimano servo wave levers and a swap to the BH90 brake hose for the MT200 👍 Any MT501 or up lever uses this servo wave technology. MT 201 levers are slightly better shaped but the main difference is they are aluminum levers instead of steel levers like on the MT200 and have no other changes to the internals....it's about a 30 35 dollar upgrade for both front and rear 201 levers...For 35 dollars you can have a Shimano M6100 front brake lever..The servo wave levers are the way to go...You need an upgrade to the SLX lever to get the free play adjustment feature. Here's a tip to get rid of free play on non adjustable models. Measure the thickness of your rotor and sandwich together some cardboard or some old credit cards to be ever so slightly thicker than your rotors..maybe 1 mm each side thicker....Put it between your calipers and squeeze the brake a few times with that sandwiched between the brake pads....the pistons will stay in place but will now be closer to your rotor...Now when you re install the caliper you'll have very little if any free play with the lever...Now you can adjust the reach inwards without crushing another finger or being so close to hitting the bars. For what it's worth you can get a Deore M6100 brake set for around 160. My brake set up: Deore M6100 front and rear. BH90 brake hose. MT200 calipers. Shimano RT-56 180/160 rotors
After trying everything from hope to zoom I ended up settling for Sram db8 & Magura mt5's on the two bikes I use the most. You don't need to spend a fortune but being greedy might affect your experience exponentially 😂
I'm running the zooms with shimano alfine pads and heays 203 in the front and 160 in the rear on my jump bike and they're way over powered but the levers started leaking recently 👎
Nice round up. Interesting top 5. I'm currently running a Shimano BR-M315 on the front and a Magura MT sport on the back and the bike is kind of unrideable because the rear break is so much more powerful than the front. I need to order another Magura.
oof i have the BR-M315 on my GT Avalanch. they are sooooo weak. I have no idea why the MT200 are so much better but everyone says they're pretty good for a similar brake..
How can a 4 caliper loose to a 2?mt420 was the best in the list, I had those tektros n1 on gt avalanche sport and they sucked, my gf from tektro went to mt200 and se loved the shimano lot more, tektro is really inconsistent
Remember, it's "The Tick's Top Five." I agree that Tektro can be a little inconsistent, but he likes the overall feel and value. The mt420 are strong, but sometimes too strong in his opinion. If it were my list, I would probably have the mt200 on top for performance vs price alone. Thanks 👍
@@WOLFTICKVIDEOS i think so? I have seen your video where you have bleeding issues, but did you drive with a good pair? Maybe another review? Take care✌️
The hb100's are actually a favorite in the gravel and folding bike community...that and the zoom db680 which is their 2piston mechanical caliper, a copy of the TRP spyre calipers. Which is actually not surprising bcoz they are both Taiwan made...love Tektros too and cant disagree with the 285 being ur top pick...those are great brakes and tektro makes good pads...they have better feel than all of the shimano budget brakes which are as you said is either on or off and no feel....u may also want to look into the tektro orion as an alternative 4piston brakes...those things are powerful...its like the 285 on steroids😊😊😊
I’m sorry but it’s not “it works good” it’s “it works well”. Second, SRAM is not pronounced “SuRAM”, it’s just SRAM. Can’t help myself to bring it up. Just saying.

Shimano servo wave levers and a swap to the BH90 brake hose for the MT200 👍
Any MT501 or up lever uses this servo wave technology.

Not the Meroca M4? I think they are better than the MT200
😲😲😲 You must have gotten a great set
@@WOLFTICKVIDEOS i think so? I have seen your video where you have bleeding issues, but did you drive with a good pair? Maybe another review? Take care✌️
I wish I saw this video before buying my sram level upgrade for the marlin
Man sram level ups are good!! But tektros may be a little cheaper 🤔😏 Ours are SWEEEET!!
I put the Shimano mt 200 on my bike I think they work great always stop well was surprised at your list but a good one 👍
I have the Tektro 745 (Orion) dual piston. Amazing breaks. Check ‘em out.
Oooh! Im intrigued 😂😂😂
@@WOLFTICKVIDEOS you gotta try it if you can find one

I’m sorry but it’s not “it works good” it’s “it works well”. Second, SRAM is not pronounced “SuRAM”, it’s just SRAM. Can’t help myself to bring it up. Just saying.
Calling all cars🚓calling all cars🚔 do we have the grammar police!?!🤦♂️😜🤣 You know how we do it. Just because your favorites weren't The Tick's favorites, you don't have to get all mad🤬😆😂🤣
Just saying 😌😁
@@WOLFTICKVIDEOS Never mad :) & no favorites (except you guys)
Better than Schram. But names are names and you are dissing them by purposely mispronouncing any name lol
Hell yeah!! Grandma's couch!! She ever get you that cup of coffee?🤣 I forgot all about the Tektro 285s and thought for sure the Clark's were gonna be #1 on the Ticks list. 🦥
Dude the tektros are were it's at! And Grandma did not......We did tell her to please not open the door!! She took it seriously 😐
@@WOLFTICKVIDEOS haha, you must have put the fear in grandma. If my china special brakes don't work out I might get the Tektros next year
