    Fantastic tutorial Curtis. This is one of the best videos on YT I've come across. You mix a good explanation of the kit with a basic lesson on sound mixing, all perfectly paced. I just got given a MixPre 6 to learn in one day, with no sound experience, and this is a life saver. Great job!

    I received my first professional tape sync job today for a national podcast. I was so excited earlier, and while I purchased a mixpre3 a couple months ago, the recording requirements for this job were set to 44.1/16 bit and that had me so incredibly upset when the audio was completely messed up in playback for about an hour. I thought my heart would fly out out of my chest, and I would drown in my own tears, but after following you step-by-step I learned exactly what to fix, and how to fix it. This video just saved the biggest break of my young career. Thank you!! Also, I loved the laugh - keep doing it.

    I find all of your videos to be very helpful, and educational. I am new to sound recording and the use of these devices. There is one thing I thought I would mention, however, just for you to think about and take into consideration when you make future videos. I've noticed in more than one video, when demonstrating assorted menu options, that (while you usually clearly explain the function of each feature and why someone might use it) you occasionally will avoid explanation in an oddly dismissive way. "If you don't know what that is, well... (laughing) you probably don't need it." I'm sure a lot of other people are like me and come to your videos to learn. I know you don't intend to mock the lack of knowledge of the viewers, but in a way it comes off as laughing at them that they wouldn't know what one of these advanced features is for, and then you don't take the time to explain what it is at all. I realize you can't cover everything in every video, but I just thought I would mention it's something I have noticed that you may want to refrain from doing in the future.

    **NOTE** This walkthrough was NOT recorded with the MixPre so please do not use this to assess the sound quality of the MixPre. Since I only have one MixPre, I could not show all of the settings and record with it at the same time. Also, the "hiss" that you hear is the fan in my camera - for practical purposes, the microphone was approximately 8 inches from the camera's fan. If you'd like to hear some clips recorded with the MixPre, please have a listen to these previous episodes:

    i start to understand the MODEs:
    There are two Mode-Setups: Basic-Mode and Advanced-Mode
    in Custom-"Mode" you can mix these setups in these Points:
    • Channel
    • Gain
    • Headphone
    • Record
    • Metadata
    • Output
    most of these points in the Basic-Mode is a simple or limited function,
    but the "Gain" is change from "Gain/Trim" of the PreAmp in basic-Mode to "Fader" of the Stereomix in "Advanced-Mode" .
    In very intuitive on this point.

    Thanks very much for this, Mr Judd !! So very helpful.
    Although the device itself seems brilliantly designed, the Sound Devices manual is surprisingly poor & has some embarrassing typos.
    FYI: On the MixPre-3, Basic Mode limits you to 48k recording, according to the manual, an inexplicable choice by Sound Devices. This is annoying because you have to set the gain through the menus when in Advanced Mode - but it's great the way you can adopt basic mode through the custom function!
    Though it might sound unprofessional, I'd also urge SD to include an option for mp3 recording in these units. Sony did that on the D100 (which also has very nice preamps) and it comes in very handy. If you're travelling & need to record an informational interview not intended for broadcast, or take notes, why use up all the space on your SD card with a wav file? And if you need to do a very long recording where you have to leave the recorder unattended the whole time mp3 would let you record for days (with a USB battery connected). They could also implement recording in both wav and mp3 as a backup or for quick transfer to a client for review.
    Speaking of unattended recording, I've always wished digital recorders would include an ***on/off timer record function*** that would let you set up your recorder in the woods for a nature recording starting at 4am the next day. (This function would be easy to add to these devices) Then you could sleep late! FBI folks would also appreciate that, for surveillance use. (They never sleep late.)

    • @LearnLightAndSoundSessions
      @LearnLightAndSoundSessions  7 лет назад +2

      +qallaf313 will do. Don't expect a big audio quality difference. The difference is largely in the RF shielding, more flexible routing, timecode generator, locking hirose power input, inbuilt NP-F battery sled, balanced XLR outputs and lots of other things like that.

    Love your vids Curtis follow them religiously, I record piano recitals with my C-200 ...with a sd302 feed to the camera, but I like the 32bit float that helps avoid clipping with the SD premix 6. I wonder if purchasing this device would be an upgrade.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd 3 года назад

      Hi Robert, thanks! The output of the MixPre II series converts the signal back to analogue at the output so if your incoming audio exceeds 0dBFS, it will either be limited or clipped on the output. So if the goal is to come away with audio from the camera, I'm not sure the 32-bit float is the best approach. If, on the other hand, you plan to record on the MixPre as well and mix that audio in post, then it could be a nice step up. But there is something about just getting it right with a 302 straight to camera which is really satisfying. Happy playing and recording!

      +Martin Prothero we powered here with eneloop AA batteries which are 4 years old. Before editing, the clip was about an hour long and I had probably 30 minutes of use on this charge. I would expect 2 - 2.5 hours on a charge with 4 freshly charged eneloops, tiny bit more with eneloop pros.

    Thank you so much for this tutorial. I've just picked up a MixPre6 ii, and it seems like a lot of this applies to the new model as well. Really like the MixPre and will be recommending this video along with the device.
    I'm wondering, when using the MixPre as an audio interface, what's the simplest way to monitor playback from a DAW along with direct monitoring of any inputs (rather than monitoring inputs through the DAW, which has too much latency for me)? It seems I need to mix the USB outputs with the direct input signal, but I'm not sure the smoothest way to do that. Any suggestions?

    • @prettyfunbird

    Thanks for making this video! How about if while using it as an audio interface with Logic Pro X, the playback will not come back through the mix pre- even if all the settings appear to be exactly as they should be. Never had an issue before with any interface giving me at least a playback. Metronome also won't play back through the interface either during recording or playback.

    • @curtisjudd
      @curtisjudd 3 года назад

      You'll need to create a custom headphone preset which includes the USB1 and USB2 channels. By default, the MixPre is configured for use as a field recorder. So you have to override that when using it as an interface.

      Yes, it records a stereo mix plus the isolated microphone channels each to their own track when you have the MixPre set to advanced mode.

    • @curtisjudd

      Hi Francois, I'm not sure. It may be the latency of the HDMI from the camera to MixPre. Is there a way to apply an offset in Premiere when syncing timecode? If it is always 5 frames off, you could use the offset to correct for the latency.

    Hi Curtis, wonderful job as always - great quality content. I‘m not sure if you already made a video about the production steps that are made after the editor syncs the video footage with the stereo mix via timecode. How will an audio program like Cubase sync the isolated tracks to the now edited movie when the editor will pass it to the sound editor? Is the timecode still the same and can be synced with the iso files? Is there a resource to find out about this step of the production? Best regards - Christoph

      @curtisjudd 3 года назад

      Hi Jazz Pistols, Thanks. I haven't used Cubase for video/film post before, so I'm not sure how it works there, but the MixPre records the stereo mix and isolated channels into a single poly wav file. All of the pro video editing apps sync the entire wav file to picture and that carries through to the audio post team, usually in Pro Tools. I don't have a specific video on that, I'm afraid. Sorry about that.

      @Jazz-Pistols 3 года назад

      @@curtisjudd Hi Curtis, thank you very much for taking the time to answer me. Thats a value information. I thought the video team would only work with the stereo mix, and the audio team has to sync the iso tracks later to the edited video - so that the video editor don‘t have to bother with too many files. But your method would make more sense. Best regards - Christoph

    Does the HDMI from the GH5 to the Mix Pre-6 need to remained plugged in together for timecode to continue to work? If so, how do I hook up the Ninja Inferno? I read both the quick start guide and the manual for the Mix Pre's and they don't tell you if you can set up the time code, and then unplug it or not. Thanks!

    • @LearnLightAndSoundSessions
      @LearnLightAndSoundSessions  7 лет назад

      Hi Stu, Just tested here on the MixPre-6. It looks like the MixPre needs a continuous HDMI feed for timecode. Once you unplug, the MixPre defaults back to it's own clock. It does not jam sync it's own clock to the HDMI feed. If I had to guess, they're holding the line that since the MixPre doesn't have a TCXO, it doesn't do the typical timecode functions (e.g., jam sync).

      Hi Line, it sounds like you probably recorded isolated channels with a L&R mix. To play back the recordings, you’ll need to go into the main menu, then the headphone menu and setup a custom preset that plays back all of the input tracks. Good luck!

    Great info! Thank you! I didn't know about the faders vs gain in Advanced mode since I've used a 702 for years and the setup is simpler. I'm getting quite confused as to the number of files that the Mix Pre generates. I typically record in linked stereo and get 4 files and are all mono? Just found a solution to this : when I drag and drop into Logic - it turns all into mono files. But when I use the import function I get a surround file which easily is put into stereo.
    The other confusion I have is with the headphone output. I also often record in linked stereo with an MS mic setup and monitor the decoded version in my headphones. I'm not quite sure if my preset is right : ch1 prefade to L postfade and ch2 prefade to R postfade with MS on. On my 702 it's very easy to switch headphone monitor settings and listen to separate left and right and MS decode.

    Hi Curtis, first of all ...congratulations for your channel. Every video you make has an excellent quality both content and production. I bought my MixPre - 6 recently and I have only one question:
    How do I record 6 simultaneous channels if there's only 5 inputs (4 XLR / TRS and 1 Aux / Mic in)? Supposing I'm recording 6 lava mics at the same time for an example.
    Thank you so much, keep with the great work!

    • @LearnLightAndSoundSessions
      @LearnLightAndSoundSessions  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Carlos, the way they count "inputs" on recording devices is a little un-intuitive at first. On the MixPre-6 for example, there are 4 XLR inputs plus a single 3.5mm stereo input (L and R channels). This is counted as 6 total input channels. In practice, you are really only recording 5 microphones. This is not just Sound Devices that counts this way, nearly all of the hardware manufacturers do so it is important to understand what they mean by looking at the specifications before buying. I hope that makes sense and thank you!
