I Traded My Old CPUs For A Graphics Card - Swap Don't Shop Ep. 1 - Getting Better Hardware For Free!

- Starting with four obsolete processors, I intend to trade my way up to something much better without spending any money. In this video I managed to swap my four Intel CPUs with a mid-range graphics card, so let's see what we got!
Thanks for watching :)
Now this, this series is gonna be very very interesting

2:20 "We swapped some obsolete hardware for another obsolete piece of hardware. Though this is slightly less obsolete."
"At least I think so.".
Ah, the classical "It's not broken, it just doesn't get enough power"
They say that none of us can get free PC parts!

I love how he holds cpus in his hand like they're a bunch of coins.
I know right
@Snort McGout
And lays them out on a rocky concrete pathway like they are a bunch of trading cards lol
Maybe we will all be trading pentiums instead of bottle caps after the fallout.😂
Wasn't there an episode of the (American) Office TV show with this sort of swap-trading? I think he wound up with a telescope. This would have been a better TV episode for sure 😎 Edit spelling!
He then traded them for some magic beans
@@popupheadlights Dang! That's right!
This was also a popular game of choice with bored kids at the mall. Two teams start with the same item, and trade up until you have the most valuable thing by the end of the trip
There was a guy that managed to get a house and he started with something stupid like an old phone
This is such a great idea !
Can’t wait to see future episodes
This was watched on Dell Vostro 230 (Duo E8500, FirePro W4100, 8GB DDR3, HDD). Backup PC for older gaming. Will try Quad later.
@Boi
FirePro W4100. Temporary until Quadro K620 arrives. And RAM is using 2 4GB Samsung dual-sided/ranked 1.6Ghz modules. Single-sided/ranked didn't work. Higher specced than advertised maximum (many PCs can).
Didn't realized you have reached 440K subs.. A bit more for 500K congrats!
We're still waiting for the second part of your Core 2 Quad Extreme video, dude. Hope you are planning to make one?
Keep up this awesome series! I have alot of older parts (5-10 years) and would love to seeing whats possible when swapping.
Damn still my pc's age 😅
If I recall correctly, ATI weren't AMD, they were a separate entity and AMD bought out ATI and merged them into the AMD umbrella.
AMD bought ATI in 2006. This card came out in 2010. They kept the ATI branding for quite a long time after the buyout before finally bringing everything under the AMD name, but this is certainly an AMD card.
@@CaptainKenway Correct. The last generation of GPU's that were fully ATI were the HD2900's if I recall correctly. AMD bought ATI before the HD3000 series, so those were kind of a both AMD and ATI influence kind of card, but it was already too long into the process to make any major changes such as vendors and branding. They officially removed the ATI naming with the HD4000 series, also the same time XFX went from Nvidia to AMD. They were still "using" the ATI name at times all the way through the HD series (7970's included). But they were never referred to as ATI cards after the 4000 series were released. From my own memory, I could be off just a tad but that's very roughly how I recall it going down.
@@pio80085 the 4000 and 5000 series cards were still called ATI, actually. it's kinda funny because a lot of the 6000 series are just rebrands of the 5000 series AFAIK.
Yep. And AMD itself is has existed since 1969.
I wanna see where this is going! Just now stumbled upon it, don't abandon this idea.
So, you're doing the Straw Millionaire with PC components. Nice.
YES! Please do this type of videos, I love these type of stuff. Kinda like what TYC does with the Months Part Hunt.
I was immediately thinking of TYC's flip challenges yeah haha
Under normal conditions I would consider your obsolete hardware a bit modern for my taste, but I’ve been enjoying your videos a lot ! Unfortunately I now have you to blame for my wife complaining about the grey/black PCs stacking up whereas before she only complained about the beige PCs :) Wish you all the best and stay safe and healthy ! Greetings from Belgium.
I'm very interested to see how far you can get. Good luck!
Please don't forget to continue this series in the future. Its been a long time since you rated gaming rigs and Sunday Tech Talks.
This is an awesome premise for a content series. I'm so interested to see how far you get
Wasnt expecting this series lol....try trading again and again and you will reach a 3080ti lol
Yeah hopefully haha
@@RandomGaminginHD hi randomgaming! 😀👋
@@RandomGaminginHD Can i have your channel : )
ill give you cola
If you make a deal with a company that is going to renew their hardware, you can pick it up for good prices. Some years ago I bought from such company all HP 45 computers, 9 laptops, 10 monitors and other bits for a very good price. Ask your family and friends too keep their ears open and give a sign when they hear something. Have a good plan on how to approach such companies and be prepared to collect on their terms.
This reminded me of a show called Trading Up on Channel 101. Very excited to see where this goes.
I haven’t subbed yet, but every video I watch is so good. You keep popping up on my RUclips. Fine RUclips, you know what I like!
Something along the lines of LTT's "Scrapyard wars" (that they wont be doing anymore) and TechYesCity's trade up series'... I can dig it. Good Luck on future endeavors!
A bit like wheeler dealers, trading up. Great idea! Nice work.
I was given a Q6600 last year, that just got loaded into a yard sale Optiplex 775. A brief "Hey, you know this CPU isn't on the spec sheet" message later and I was off to the races.
Definite improvement over the Pentium E2160 that came in it.
I love the old 5XXX series cards. I made a video on the HD 5870 and was pleasantly surprised at the performance
Dudes to the point doesn't make u watch a 30min video for something that can be sum up in 5 awesome job!
Loving the random shot of the bumblebee!
2:48 Lovely pirouette there
this is why i love this channel keep it fresh and new
the fact u put them on the ground pins down hurts the eyes😂😂
dont worry it wont damage them most of the times
Haha they should be fine :)
"So I traded some CPUs for a GPU a GPU for a PSU a PSU for an APU, an APU for a CPU, and now I have a Lewis gun."
This series is going to be so fun!!
Loved the name for the series!
@RandomGaminginHD
This is a very cool idea mate. I hope this series pushes your subs to 1m!
Looking forward to seeing where this series goes. Bartering hardware is a pretty cool concept.
Love this concept of a videos, well done !!😍 (Bell turned on😁)
I see, this is like the penny to car challenge people did a long time ago! Good luck. I might even try to do this with my old laptop components such as the ram and processor (if its not soldered in lmao).
Haha give it a go
This reminds me of over a decade ago when a 17 year old traded up over 2 years from an old iPhone to a Porsche Boxster. One trade at a time he went up in value until 14 trades later he had a sports car.
Things have gotten so bad we are going back to barter economy? okay guys how many coco beans is my RX 480 8GB worth?
500 beans
@@HGAMES69 I’ll up that, 501 beans
Nah. I have a 480 myself. It goes for £200 on eBay. So 200lbs of Cocoa Beans
I still have my old Q6600 powered PC stored in my shed - it was a fine machine back in the day
Excited for this series!!
Good decision 👏👏
Nice idea, I might try this myself with my old phones.
Even if it doesnt cost more, the card is actually a better display on a room. It can easily trigger the nostalgia effect just by looking at it.
Ayyyy HD 5830, that was my first gpu!
i like this new series, just seeing how far can you get into trading is a fascinating idea in 2021 since you can't get much on your hands these days
Thumbnail is like trading Nuka Cola bottle caps for something else in Fallout..
*plays Cyberpunk theme song*
Interesting. Curious to see where this series goes...
What I think could have been the case if not the power supply, is that some older Dells would only give out 50w on the PCI-E slot, not the 75w it's supposed too.
Fun project! I'd definitely trade for money every now and then though, if you want to do all this without touching cash, it's going to be very hard. So let's hope you get 25 pounds for this card now ;).
a psu or case could be a good next option for a trade.
That's what i did last year, swapped 2 phones for one flagship. Swapped a unique midrange phone for another flagship.
Great idea pal it's like the pc version of trading up 😀
One of my favorite gpus in 2011, i didnt had the money so went with an HD4890 used that's only DX10, but for the time that wasn't a problem.
Looking forward to seeing where this goes for sure, brilliant idea for a series!
Still rocking a Q9550 and a Q8400 in 2 systems . Fot a Q6600 waiting for a build too ...
C2Q is definitely still fast enough to handle some *basic* modern games but at its age, it becomes a matter of supporting the CPU technologies that newer programs use. Contemporary AMD chips were even worse, playing catch-up with things like SSE.
I used to have one of these, was a thirsty bastard for power and quite hot as well if I remember rightly!
I had a Core2Duo E6750, it was amazing at the time, and did me well for many many years
I’m gonna love this series
Last year I traded an R3 3200g for an R5 2600. This year I'm selling that CPU as well as an old HD 7950 to reimburse the 5600g I just bought.
Ayyy HD 7950 was my second gpu
@@thegamer9882 its s good one! Actually, my first gaming pc had an HD 7970. The 7950 was a more recent acquisition :)
Good trade !!!
VERY interesting to see how far can you get with it !!!
This is excellent! I'm eagerly awaiting your next swap!
This series should be named as
"How to get an RTX card in 2021!"
Dude, you can try to get a swap for a "better" component an so on until got a fairly decent card... and all starting with 20£...This will be a great test for your "bargain" potential xD
Bring back the outer worlds to the list of benchmarks!
Its probably a good idea to make each trade between different "classes" of items. I don't think you will gain much value from trading one GPU for another, as they are usually directly comparable through benchmarks or specs. Trading a CPU for a GPU, or a GPU for a motherboard, will probably work better, since you cant just directly compare "performance".
I haven't watched your content for a while but i'll follow this series, looks interesting.
Can’t wait, bring on the trades 💪🏼
Please consider adding GPU and CPU frequencies to your OSD when testing, would love to see what freq your CPUs you're testing hold, also what your specific example of GPU can go up to is clock.
How about exploring cheap Dual setups? I had a GTX970 for ages and then bought the exact part number (best way to go) two years back for like 80$ might have been less. They work well. One game I think uses one to render and the other for physics.
I can already tell I’m gonna live this series keep it up!
Correction: AMD has existed for decades and purchased ATI in 2006 and still had GPUs under the ATI name for a few more years.
You could aim to trade it for something like a Raspberry Pi or other SBC?
I think he got this series inspiration from "paper clip to house by trade" stuff
I think it would be pretty cool to keep this GPU and swap useless hardware you have lying around until you have a full PC , so perhaps the next step is trying to swap some items for a motherboard to decide the platform. It may take time so if you find free hardware that could be used towards the PC as the idea here is to spend no money. but i think this series will do very well
I gave a pal my old 5850 with 2 x 92 mm arctic pwm case fans zip tied on years ago, it still plays his fave mmo games fine.
You might want to ignore the 'legacy' driver and go for the last 'beta', its 20% faster and I never had any issues but that might just be luck.
I look forward to seeing much more of this series!
I got a crap ton of 2nd gen i3 CPUs, I would like to trade them, even for old 24” monitors etc. I guess I can use Craigslist or something here in America.
Just as a heads up @RandomGaminginHD.....that's not an ATI card. ATI was bought by AMD in 2006 and they quit using the name ATI with the HD4000 series (same time XFX joined up with AMD GPU's, they were never an ATI vendor). Some of the reference cards were still using the old brand name on the heatsinks, but I'll bet if you check the model number ATI isn't listed anywhere on it. GPUz should also report it as an AMD card.
Month already passed - still waiting for new episode)
Or you just putting all swaps for dishwashers and microwaves behind the scenes?
Looking forward to the next one
Keep up the good work!
I've never heard of 5830. I only knew of 5850 and 5870. It would probably be a good pairing with that Q6600 for a retro XP gaming machine.
Good luck trading up. 👍
The q 6600 was my first cpu on my first gaming pc great times did me well for a long time with world of warcraft
Yeah it’s a legend
Oh yes! Looking forward to these "Swap" episodes.
at least you're not talking about "4090's" and "7900xt's" . thank you.
I like this, what a unique thing to do. First I've seen atleast
Reminds me of "Wheeler Dealers: Trading Up"
oh heck yeah! I already love the series.
Great idea for a series. Also, how about starting with a budget say 50pounds and make your way up to a modern graphics card or console by trading up.
I'm at the time now where I need something better than I currently have "AMD FX 6300 Black Edition". I have a box full of old graphics cards and never thought of trading them all for a CPU.
Best chanel
Chanel no. 5
RGinHD will be that guy who, over the course of 2-3 years, gradually parlays a GT 710 into an RTX 4090.
1:50 just one tiny explanation error there (please don't hate me): AMD was never known as ATI :) ATI was known as ATI before they were bought by AMD, who was known as AMD :)) Lots of love from Romania!
I can literally get a Q6600 locally for €2 and 189 in stock. So this trade isn’t to bad
