  • During the first drive Imran said the car felt a bit flat to him, and having driven hundreds of different E9x M3's over the years he tends to have a pretty good feel for them.
    So before we get started, lets put the car on the dyno and see just how much power its making!

    3hp crank drop after 152k miles. Thats incredibly impressive and shows how strong S65s are with maintenance.

      This is awesome, my E90 M3 has 151k and I changed the spark ⚡️ plugs about 5k a go and noticed a big difference! Now I know why!

      I'm actually surprised that such a drop in ignition timing on the top end (10* almost) didn't result in much more of a power drop.

    Given the mileage, it is extremely impressive for such a high strung engine to be producing virtually factory quoted HP figures.

    Thanks for showing the timing...love the detail you guys give and it's good to see a "seemingly" well taken care of high mileage S65 can still produce strong power! Makes me feel much better about having my E90 & E92 S65's!

    Really interesting video guys. It’s all very well doing remaps, exhausts and intakes, but you have to start with the basics. Perfect example of that here.

    Another great video Imran , Plugs make a world of difference, especially after 40k miles, I have a 32 yr old Volvo and it was sluggish and so i did an oil change with plugs, rotor , distributor cap and air filter with a fresh tank of 97 RON fuel CDN GAS SUCKS , i didn't gain any power it just ran smoother and i now get almost 50 more miles to a tank of gas, so it was beneficial and it all cost less than $ 100 🏎

      I would definitely be interested in the 102 octane comparison, having used it during my last 2 trips to Germany. My car felt much stronger after an extended run on the autobahn.

    Very interesting. I did the same on my 92 M3 this week + idle control valve, throttle actuators, fuel tank breather, road bearings $$ But it’s a must to do

    I confirm no correlation between mileage & power for this car. I had my second e92 m3 with +100k miles and it feels more powerfull than the 1st own (low mileage 30k miles)
    I also loved the EDC option in daily (I sold my old one because has too "harsh" suspensions)

      There is a detailed video on our channel about the intake including datalogs and dyno. The plenum doesn't make any power and has never been advertised as doing so.

    I predicted 398 earlier today and mentally after the spark plug change
    406, so 411 was a bit of a surprise, I suppose the bottom line is that if one spark plug gets oiled up you need to keep an eye on it

    I really need to bring my e90 M3 to you. Have a air leak in the manifold and cylinder 5 misfire. It has been booked in with grosvenor reading. After watching few of your videos should have booked in with you.

      AFR before and after was the same as the ECU is targeting a certain value, so is adjusting fuelling as necessary.

      @@EvolveAutomotive How many maps does the S65 have for fuelling ? A couple of part throttle closed loop and a WOT fixed value map ?

      @@simonhanlon7518 It also has ITBs, so that complicates maps a bit too, since low load/throttle will get inaccurate data from map (not sure how it is with MAFs).

      @@hojnikb True it has ITBs but all 8 share a common plenum and it doesn’t have a MAF, I’m pretty sure it’s Alpha N with map compensation . I’m just curious as to why timing is closed loop ( plug monitored ) at WOT if the fuel is a fixed value . There shouldn’t be any need to vary the timing if the mixture is fixed .

      @@simonhanlon7518 I'm surpised that a modern engine like S65 doesn't use MAF, but i'm sure there's good reason for doing so.
      As for timing at WOT; plenty of reasons why you want to still adjust timing. Bad fuel, high IATs, poor plugs etc...

    Awesome! This is amazing data and I've got very interested in this evidence. Spark plug is crucial parts for engine performance isn't it. As far as I know BMW recommends spark plug must be changed every 37kmiles. What is your recommendation for spark plug change interval?

    Very interesting and useful video, good to see your plug change backed up by dyno figures and ignition curve. I wonder what the mileage cut off point should be for plugs from a performance perspective? (vs BMWs service change interval of every 3rd oil change, so I think a max of 45k miles?).

      If you’re after maximum performance every 10-15k miles would be our recommendation but it depends on usage.

    Do you service and check normal everyday BMWs like 320i? Issues with one so need to get it sorted.

    🇧🇷🇧🇷👏🏻👏🏻 Considering that this car is supposed to come with about 400hp from factory, on paper, and also with 40 NM of torque, this 150 mile e92 M3 Still got it, and is probably in pretty good shape, Awesome video. the spark plugs made such a difference.

      It's actually 420HP. so it only lost ~10HP at the most.

    2 questions - are the power/torque figures corrected for temperature (30c ambient versus 15c, which is reference temperature...I think)? And why is the ignition advance curve so “jagged” even with the new plugs? I would have expected a smoother, more consistent figure. Is something else going on to cause this?

    Which v8 should I buy, the e92 or the f10 m5?
    The problem with the s65 now is that in this day, it just isn't as fast. A regular s3 would keep up with the e92 m3
