My family moved from Columbia Point to 15 Holden Street in Uphams Corner on July 20, 1964. Almost every day the local preteens and teens would play touch football in the back parking lot of the shopping mart or in the parking lot of the post office. Several kids sold newspapers for old Gus who controlled all the street corner newspaper boys and eventually I worked there too selling papers at the corner of Boston Street and Columbia Road and then up at the intersection of Columbia Road and Dudley Street where I could make about $10.00 per week. Some of that pay allowed me to buy a "raspberry lime rickey" at the soda fountain of Liggetts Pharmacy at Columbia Road and Dudley Street. I've got many memories from growing up Uphams Corner. There was an old cop there called "Sully" who had the hard core reputation of kicking teens (including me) in the ass if they acted up. Little could I imagine that I'd end up replacing Sully as the beat cop in Uphams Corner about 15 to 20 years later. I'll keep an eye out on this sight for future posts. Dave Allen
That is a great comment Dave. I love the old stories and memories of Boston. As you may be able to see in my icon, I marched with St. Kevin's Emerald Knights.
I remember the five and dime in the little soda shop they had with the stools my sister worked there and I used to go in and get a dish of ice cream for free 1969 you brought back a lot of memories maybe I was one of the little kids sully was chasing around😅😅
This was my childhood neighborhood in 1965 it was very nice back then why does this bring back memories there was a soda shop across the street there my mom would take me to get an ice cream for a dish of ice cream it was 10 cents
My memories for a 1965 to 1969 the only thing bad going on really was the Vietnam war I don't have too many bad memories a lot of friends back then it was a neighborhood where everyone hung out everybody know everybody's kids you didn't dare do anything because they would tell your parents😅
@@Democrathater24 Went to the dances at St Kevins when I was about 15. Also, the Byrd Street Gym. Lived in the Ronan Park area. Great place to be at that time.
My grandfather used to sail Dorchester Bay in the early 1900s it was beautiful back then!
