    I would recommend some diagonal welded bracing and a double vertical arm instead of a single. 4 pipes, not two for the vertical support. 3 bearing blade guides not one in order to encapsulate and control the blade and keep it from slipping off. 13 hp or above, 10 inch large pully or larger on the drive wheel.

  • @accordv6er

    Thought about this today after looking at mills. Pretty sure I will diy with a small diesel using a pto/clutch setup that allows for blade engagement progressively, as well as a clutch to a power feed. I actually am considering using a hydrostat mower transaxle to run both blade and carriage. I think if I take my time getting good deals/scavenging, under $1000 is doable. Also a tiller might be a really good PTO source! The ability to have a hydraulic output alone is cool. I mean honestly they can be had cheap enough, (nearly free) it would be worth it just for hydraulics to turn or lift, and drive to feed. I'm betting the hydros are good enough to at least lift and lower a saw or turn a log. Even cooler if I can utilize the low RPM PTO to lift a log. Anyone thought of adding a vertical cutter to their carriage? Something else it might be able to do. Use circular saw blades with adjustable position on an output shaft, say 3 of them, that could cut 1x or 2x on a first pass, with the band saw taking the second. Could even use the depth of the band cuts to be the set depth of the circular saws. I think 7-10 hp would have no problem with a few 10" blades long as the feed speed is reasonable. Still faster than turn slice turn

      On any cable winch, as the cable accumulates on the shaft the size is going to increase, thus changing the amount of travel on each turn.

    I'm curious as to how balanced the sheaves are? I know they are typically statically balanced.
    I ask because I intend to build my own upright bandsaw. I can order wheels from a few different equipment manufacturers, but I'm looking at $300-400 for the wheels alone.
    I honestly don't mind the cost, if I'm assured of running the machine at 3000+ SFPM with little vibration, but if I can get wheels for $100, obviously I'm in favor ...

    • @RedPoppyRanch
      @RedPoppyRanch  7 лет назад

      Theball Player i've ran them at over 4000 SFPM without any issue which is way too fast by the way. The blades are designed to run that fast. I haven't had any balance issues.

    • @RedPoppyRanch
      @RedPoppyRanch  7 лет назад +2

      Not officially sure. I have an Idea what it's going to take. The pulleys I have are likely too small but I'm going to try it. There will be a little figuring once I get it all together.

    • @mada94fxr
      @mada94fxr 7 лет назад

      Hey there. If the engine came off a generator as you mentioned, 99.9% of today's generators like you get at the local home centers run 3600 RPM, goverened speed no matter what the HP, watts / KW. Hope this helps and again, sweet build you have going on there. As for the tapered shaft on the gen motor, I just had a snowblower motor given to me here in North central FL...Go figure. We don't get much snow in FL. Anyhow, the shaft is in 3 steps with the smallest diameter being 7/8" (.875"). It's going to be a bit of a challenge getting things lined up on it when I decide to build.

  • @Tonnsfabrication
    @Tonnsfabrication 7 лет назад +1

    With an 11 hp engine your blade should roll out around 3800 sfpm . With that being said I can look right at your set up and tell you that your blade speed is going to be about three as fast as you want/need it to be. My guess is that you needed three of the 18.75 pulleys not two. Don't take my word for it, do the calculations for your self on this site. vintagemachinery.org/math/sfpm.aspx

    • @Tonnsfabrication
      @Tonnsfabrication 7 лет назад

      Also SFPM in relationship to HP are a general guideline in the sawmill world and can vary with max RPM of said engine. Most standard engines run at 3600 to 3800 RPM max. This is what I've found from other sawyers/builders.
      10 HP = 3600 SFPM
      11 HP = 3800 SFPM
      12 HP = 4000 SFPM
      14 HP = 4200 SFPM
      16 HP =4400 SFPM
      18 HP and up 4500 SFPM and the blade should never exceed this nor should it need to, if the gear ratios are correct it will cut with authority.

      That sounds fine to fill the V area , there is a shoulder to hold the band on also , on pulleys on band saws , besides the guide wheels on the supports , worth your time to look at some expanded saw pulley pics . Great to see you do this build at such a lower cost .
