Ghost Towns of Keweenaw

- The Keweenaw Peninsula is dotted by towns that once thrived with the Copper Mining Industry. Many of those towns are now abandoned or have only a fraction of their previous population remaining.
Calumet is an absolutely awesome town. We were amazed by the beauty of all the old buildings as well as the work being done in the town to restore the town to its earlier glory. The residents we met were all very nice, too. You are extremely lucky to live there. We can hardly wait to return.
MEAL AND READ LOVE THE UP...........ALL AMERICAN PATRIOTS.......BLEESS THE ALL UP............AMETRICA.
My relatives are from there! I'm 72 now and try to make ut up there every year. Can't get enough of the beauty..
My mother-in-law lived in the home at 2:53 to 3:23 in the 1930's. Its near 41 & M26 in Phoenix across from the Phoenix mine crusher. The home has fallen around 2013 but the workshop still stands. She's in her 90's and tells stories about swimming in Eagle River nearby and attending the 2 story schoolhouse (gone) which was next to the still existing church on 41.
When I was a little boy my dad and grandfather would go the many copper mines that were still operating. I was In total aww. Never ever will forget it.
Great Video. I love the UP. Unrelated: I also love Pink Floyd.
Perfect so g from David Gilmore for this. I love it up there.. I'm originally from Farmington Michigan. Moved there back the mid 50s. Live in Ann Arbor now and drive to that area every year. I love it! ❤️
This was my second trip there (first was in 1970). My wife had never been there, so I wanted her to see how magical it is up there. She was not disappointed.
We were planning a return this year, but our son's wedding got re-scheduled to our planned vacation week. We hope to return again in 2010.
I've snowmobiled through a lot of these places and even though it was fun, it was also a little unnerving how deserted everything seemed. Some houses obviously had people living there, but it was a different experience seeing so many roads unplowed and when I needed to stop for gas it was a crap shoot whether or not the station was even open. Great video.
Nice pictures! I see that the classification of Ahmeek as a ghost town is a matter of some controversy. I would have to agree that it is not a ghost town; yes, it has declined significantly from its peak, but I have never seen any tourist literature or guides describe it as a "ghost town." And as someone who spent a couple of summers with her grandfather in Ahmeek, I must say that it's quite a lovely little place. :)
How lucky you are to live in such a beautiful place. My wife and I are so anxious to return. We're still hoping to get back in 2009, but family commitments may prevent it.
We were so pleased at the friendliness of the residents we met. Everyone was kind, helpful and willing to tell us about the area. You certainly live in a magical place.
We didn't do any fishing, but we did kayak on the Ontanogan River. We also did some off-roading, but most of the time was spent investigating old mines and towns from the mining era. I hadn't been to Keewenaw since 1970 and my wife had never been, so it was a wonderful experience to see so many fantastic sites and meet so many friendly people (nobody was rude). You are very fortunate to live in such a beautiful and friendly place. We can hardly wait to get back up there (probably Summer 2010).
When I was a kid and traveling with my parents, my mom would look at a structure like these and say, “if these walls could talk, the story they could tell”. The script for a made for TV movie no doubt! I don’t think they have “made for TV “ movies any more are their?
That cute little two story tucked away in the woods in Mandin just needs some fixing up, a satellite dish, a continuous streaming source of cold beer, a plow a snowmobile and some bug spray and hey I'm good to go!
Very nice, like you I love the U.P./ I must say great choice in Music, David Gilmour's voice add's a nice touch...thank you.
love this.....i guess some consider ghostown not pc....as a retired trucker, i can't tell you how many dying towns i've seen out on the backroads.....doesn't mean people don't live there, just that the world has bypassed them.....i live rural in the foothills of the appalachians and i wouldn't have it any other way!!!! great pics!!!
That's Pink Floyd's "The Division Bell".
A ghost town is defined by having 10% or less of it's highest population if I remember right.
Several of the "abandoned " houses in the video are hunting cabins. Reshoot this video from November 15th to the 30th and it will be damn near crowded.
Plenty of like in Gay MI, we're there all the time
We included some pictures from our tour of Delaware in the "Abandoned Copper Mines" video that we posted. Delaware was really cool. We stopped by the mine where they do the tours, but also visit the remains of other buildings in Delaware. The history up there is incredible.
what a great song to exemplify the footage
i dont know that i could resist the urge to go inside the old buildings in spite of the possibility of ending up the basement
Some of the houses have people living in them.
OK. in that case I could definitely resist the urge. Im curious but not that curious!
Thanks for sharing that. Have been to the U.P. every year for the last 18. Love it up there ehh...
This is truly truly beautiful
I don't make the designations. There is actually some "official" criteria regarding what constitutes a ghost town. It's based on the current population as a percentage of its peak population and takes rate of decline into account.
These aren't ghost towns...
Mr. Tucker. I apologize for offending, but would like to explain. I have many friends who enjoy visiting those towns and we drive many hours to enjoy towns like this. While there, we visit local stores and spend money in those towns -- it's all part of the fun. We have found most residents of the UP to be warm, friendly, welcoming people and I am also quick to relay that to others. Trust me, I love the UP and would never do anything to intentional bring harm to the people, the towns or the land.
Please be certain that the week we spent in Keweenaw left us quite impressed with the people. We frequently strike up conversations with local people and we didn't meet anyone who wasn't very friendly and helpful.
As for Detroit, one of the suburbs IS designated a ghost town. In my mind, Detroit would give "ghost town" a bad name.
You are quite lucky to live in such a beautiful place. We can hardly wait to get back up there.
Thanks, Jesse. We will be back up there soon and it might only be a short detour to check it out.
Amazing sights up there, thank you for sharing!
i absolutely adore the keweenaw peninsula...best spot in all of the mitten :)
I don't know how many of the 12 year-round residents made up the half-dozen or so people who were in the bar when we were there, but I will say they were very friendly. They made us feel right at home -- including the little joke they played on my wife. Very nice people in Gay.
There is a town mentioned on all the maps of Keewenaw called "Nepco Camp Number 7"; it looks like it is off Route 41 near Phoenix a few miles out into the woods off a snowmobile trail. Ever heard of it?
Actually, all of these towns are officially recognized as ghost towns. There are criteria to be met and the groups that analyze the criteria have determined these to be ghost towns. Don't blame me, I just visited and thought I would share the beautiful things I saw.
One more observation: I was very impressed with how friendly and nice the people are in the U.P. -- obviously we didn't meet you.
Don't forget to slip that Prozac in your Wheaties tomorrow morning!
I'm from Western Australia, and have been observing on RUclips the slow decline of Detroit. I didn't realise it was a statewide problem. Where I'm from, this state is primarily responsible for why the Australian Dollar is presently worth $1.07 US. You name it, someon is digging it up or refining it here.
Some forward thinking politicians could have easily arrested the slide by preserving a lot of these buildings for tourism. Thes old ghost towns look like a nice place for a holiday
Ever drive the Mandan loop? It's Keweenaw adventure and you can live to tell about it lol. These are very well done videos thank you!
diishoots Yes, we have driven the Mandan Loop a few times. We have camped at High Rock several times, too. We absolutely love it up there.
Next time you venture to High Rock look for the sandy beach and camp spot on the east end of Schlatter lake...there is a camp spot on the island also...Excellent clips of the most perfect place...thanks!!
My family sold their home in Mohawk, back in the 60's. I would hitchhike from Detroit when I was 13 and I was welcomed like family. I was taught how to drink with John "Nookie" Yaowl, Cowboy, and Butch Betsing. Butch was the famous "Betsing's Boy" from the Gay Michigan revenge folk tale. I have hiked from the Schlatter's east camp, to Mud Lake, 9 miles away at midnight, for these giant gun metal blue perch. There are many holy places throughout the C&H land up there. And walk quiet, and slow, you will see wonders up there that defy your rational explanations. I am always honored to be in there.
I would love to live there. I think I could probably talk my wife into it, but the real problem would be finding a job. I'm a firefighter and the towns there are too small to support full-time fire departments.
Heading up there in two days from Indiana.
It should be a fantastic time. Have fun!
As I've written before, I don't decide what town gets classified as "ghost towns". I've found numerous sources that classify these towns as "ghost" based on population loss over a specific period of time combined with the current population as a percentage of the highest historical population.
Michigan is fast on the way to becoming a "ghost state" -- but our population and job loss is another (more political) discussion.
Chill out, though -- I meant no offense.
Cool video. I love the UP and its ghost towns. I can't wait until this Summer to get back up there and visit a few. Plus some 4 wheeling!
Do you hit the LP ghost towns at all?
Ahmeek is not a ghost town. People live there.
Cool video - we're featuring it today on Absolute Michigan (dotcom)!
i just seen a ghost...any reccomendations on what i should do? i called ghost busters but ther number is dis-connected. ;-) I LOVE MICHIGAN !!! IM FROM CALUMET. IT ROCKS !!
It's a great vacation when you can visit the historic sites in the U.P. and combine it with 4-wheeling.
I haven't visited very many ghost towns in the Lower Peninsula. If you wouldn't mind giving me some recommendations (GPS coordinates would be a bonus) I would appreciate it. We would love to visit some ghost towns in the L.P. (closer to home).
Technically, Ahmeek isn't a "ghost town" - it's more like a one-horse town where the horse is dead.
BAsed on the criteria of how a town is determined to be a ghost town, Ahmeek is, indeed, a ghost town. This doesn't mean it is empty. It only means that there has been a dramatic reduction in population.
I need to know if these are in the upper peninsula or no? I love ghost towns
Yes, these are all on the Keweenaw Peninsula area of the Upper Peninsula. There is a lot of fun to be had there.
its not all that bad, a good place and food too, old styles cold in the can!
Sorry for the delinquent response...Nepco Camp # 7 is south of 41 between Gratiot Lake and Gay Lac la Belle Rd. Look it up on Google Maps. RUclips would not let me post the GoogleMap URL, but just look up "Nepco Camp #7."
19th century ghosttowns are interesting but somehow, these post industrial revolution towns kinda weird me out. Feels like watching the decline of my own culture ya know?
I just love the Keweenaw! I could easily live there but I don't think my wife would want to. I think it would be a great place to raise a family. We currently live in Grayling and its cool but not as cool as the KEWEENAW!
Great Vid, I hit subscribe on teh second note of Division Bell
@phicampiii I've never heard of it, but we may need to look for it when we're up there next year. Do you have any more information on it? I would appreciate anything you could share.
i guess because theres just so many dilapidated old houses the towns dont want a bunch of falling in houses.
How can I get copies of all your videos?? My 86 year old father would LOVE to see these. He could probably talk about a lot of these areas. He also was a miner.
+Janet Petermann , I still have these videos on my computer. I think I might also have a DVD compilation of that particular trip laying around the house somewhere.
I like the idea of doing something nice for your father, but I want to remind you that these aren't high-quality, professional videos -- they are just some things put together by a guy who loves the UP.
Anyway, if you want to send me an e-mail, I will see if I can find a way to help out with this.
bsquared1@ameritech.net
+Janet Petermann , I tried to send an e-mail to the address below, but it came back as undeliverable. Please send an e-mail directly to the address I listed below so I will be able to contact you when I get something together for you (probably next week).
Wow, you seem to be quite sensitive. If "chill out" offends you, then there is no point in even offering an apology -- that might hurt your feelings, too.
Rather than sit there and get upset, why not read the comments to realize that everyone appreciates the beauty and friendly atmosphere up there?
Very good compilation.Don't understand why everyone is arguing over the status of the area?
..kinda false advertising..not really true ghost towns...people are still living there..;.
Yah, it sounds like you answered the "ghost town" thing already so I won't go there. Maybe we should promote the term "Zombie Town" since many of our towns up here show movement but are not really alive anymore, eh? Nice vid with decent photog and good editing.
Keweenaw Brewery rules!
I read an ad somewhere up there "go straight to the Gay Bar : clever...:)
Elm river??????????
Thanks for the inclusion of Pink Floyd...
I was just up there last week, most of the, are bulldozed down now
+michaeljp86 Why would they bulldoze them? Most of the towns shown in this video aren't ghost towns...they're just poor, outskirts towns a few miles outside of the houghton/hancock/Calumet etc. area. There's quite a few abandoned mine homes...but these aren't ghost towns.
so is like old houses to you haunted....
go in
I just delete dumb peoples comments it just easier!
