I am almost took off on a wave at Pleasure Point, thinking this guy wasn't going to make it around a section, he not only dd but busted a huge air, and lucky for me I didn't go or Pete would have landed on my back. Those were the days.
love your channel Bru also love peter mel cuz i am around his age also love JJF cuz is one best surfers in the world ...unfortulatly WLS made JJF looks bad i was at the beach his 9.7 was a great wave, but the previews match with Italo JJF go a 8,33 in his last buzzer bitter to turn the heat, italo got really under score in one of the best airs of the yr a full rotation with a flawless landi and gor a "8.00"...if JJF layback was a 9.7(old school turn),Italo's air also should be a really high score 9.5 at least...also JJF has his brand Florence marine sponsoring the event...this was a conflict of interests this was horrible for surfing and JJF every body saying who the real winner was ITALO
Thank you for the feedback and I strongly agree with you about the scoring that day. They were rewarding progression early on then suddenly changed the scale when JJF hit the water. Being that JJF dominated the season, he was a worthy world champ, however if Italo beat Ethan in the first match, he definitely beat JJF by the same scoring criteria. The worst part is how this throws fuel on the fire of the already out of control victim complex based, race biased judging conspiracy theories coming from a certain region.
Those boys were all rippers, my brother, Peter, Repogle, Machado. Saw them early and name dropped all of them in Surfing...signed CK the talent scount.
@@RealSurfStories Yes, I was the guy who had the Surfer?Surfing mag connection and wrote and ghost wrote so for Santa Cruz I'd call Richie, Vince, and others, talk to the different teams, see who's the best kids and drop them. Peter Mel was one. I think I posted his name around 1985 or so so maybe 12 years old? I can't remember but would watch Insides and Inside at the lane, ask around, watch and name drop. There was no real money back then. I think I got paid fifty bucks an issue. It was fun playing "baseball scout" and seeing the young guns eyes light up when they got their first name in a mag:>)
Enough with this nonsense. Do you have any idea how ridiculous you sound to someone who grew up on Oahu? People shouldn’t travel less for surf, they should travel more for it. Just be respectful. Always.
Now think about doing any of that on a box-railed 6' 5", 2-7/8" thick 1987 board! Wrap your head around that! Well done, TR! Great you keep these coming! I hope you eventually get every piece of film transferred. You must have tons.
@@xwhite2020 May have been a little shorter. A lot of people kept a little longer boards in Santa Cruz for the paddling. A lot stronger currents than Southern California. Especially once you get out of the bay. But those boards don't work anything as good as now. We tried shorter boards. I had a 5' 4" in 79 or 80. Fucking Wave Tools of all things. It was cool though. Usually the only down south boards we would touch were Al Merricks. Otherwise Haut, Pearson, Steve Coletta, or Joey Thomas! A few more. I forget. I'm fucking old.
@@erikhancock98569 I was paddling back out with Mark Renneker at Mav's in the early or mid 90s and we saw Pete take off impossibly deep, free-fall, make it, and somehow bottom turn and make the wave on a solid 20ft. plus set. Renneker looked at me and said something like "We could have practiced daily our whole lives, like if we were born to surfing parents and trained nothing else but surfing and we never would have made that wave." He said he was thinking of studying the neural pathways of guys like Pete and Michael Jordan cause something is obviously different. This was a long time ago, so I'm sure the quote isn't perfect, but that was basically what he said. He was right, too.
Thank for posting this. I haven’t seen that wave from Waimea in a long time.
Such an epic day. Was that JBG in front?
So rad! Thanks TR!)
Respect the rail, the foundation of power surfing.
Such a well rounded surfer!🤙
Much appreciated!
Pete was quite a presence. Wild SC Life. I started surfing on the coast, N Of Santa Cruz in 1989.

Hell yeah, love that old 8mm footage, stoke central. 🤙🏼🤙🏼

Freeline Design has been there since around 1969 or so. Richard Schmidt was very talented also.

Word. Mark Machado probably the best in that era.

Probably not 6'5" Boards were pretty short in 87. Still what you're saying is true. That's some damn fine surfing.

Very impressive, especially how thin Mel was!
