As Shaun and Wife Carla's art director for their clothing line ~ Solitude, the Tomson's are great people and some of my favorite clients ever. Cheers Tomson's 🌊 FH
Shawn Thomson Was definitely a pioneer of pro surfing n deep tube riding on the north shore in the early 70s. He was one of the main pioneers that bust down the doors and pave the way. All the pro surfers today that are making a good living at the sport they love. owe what they have the Shawn Thompson.
I remember a picture of Shaun Thompson doing a round house cutback in surfer magazine back in 1974.. I had already been surfing for 7 years… but that was it for me.. it was my biggest inspiration and pushed me to move to the North Shore from Jersey.. I’m 67 now and still trying to charge..lol.. Those were the best of times.. I’m so thankful I grew up when I did.
Something I'll never forget. I was doing ding repairs in HB in the late 70s early 80s . When the contest were in town I would repair a few boards for the pros, Shaun was the only one that tipped me when I fixed his board. Honorable gentleman.
The backside revolution... love it when he said he'd leave the tubes for the goofy footers. Few dare do what he does in Pipeline, maneuvering under the tube, hitting the lip like crazy.
What a legend. Have oodles of respect for this man, am from his era, early Bay of Plenty days, Durban. Knew his pops Ernie too. Thank you RSS your doccie on Shaun Tomson is right on point, this made my morning! Awesome footage took me down memory lane. Again, 🙏
“Free Ride” … all of us surfers just going crazy and shouting out loud with amazement at Shaun’s incomparable style. Something younger generations with video tapes and later RUclips just can’t comprehend…going to see a surf movie in a theater, often just a one night showing, was an event for the “tribe” and for me, Shaun was the icon. Seeing him decades later when he was touring with “Bustin’ Down the Door” was an equally memorable event and even my kids were amazed by Shaun’s talent.
Fluid style, great surfer - remember when you dropped in on me at NN the surf club right, I was so far back in the barrel you did not know - yep - until I popped out and said HEY ! - LOL - small world 😁
Bought a six 6 twin and a thruster from Shaun. Shaped by Rusty. Both boards would do anything you wanted to do. Big and small waves. Best days of my life 🌊
Yea Curren Has a very good smooth flowing style I like the way he goes off the bottom off the top I really watch him Surf, then all these acrobatic new generation surfers these days
Shaun was one of the founding fathers of modern surfing. Evolved board design allowed them to do high performance surfing that had never been seen before. Still looks great 50 years later.
I remember seeing Free Ride at the SC Civic when it came out. Seeing Shaun turning in the tube was a game-changer. I didn't get to the point of changing angles in the barrel for a few years after that, but I immediately started turning up the face, grabbing the rail, and punching out the back of closeouts at Santa Maria, Blacks and Pink House. Barrel practice when you didn't feel like battling the crowd push at the Harbor. All that from Shaun Tomson. I would've drawn a straight line in the barrel for the next 20 years if not for him. Such great work you're doing making these vids that put things in context. I don't see anyone else doing this.
Thank you. I remember Free Ride at SC Civic as well and the part about pulling out the back of the tube had a major impact on me as well. I remember the underwater shot of him doing it as he was explaining it and it opened up a new realm.
I always remember going out to Pink House, there was a little ramp into the wave, and you could run in the barrel, but mostly closeouts. I went there and practiced that till I got it down. Do you remember a time in the late 80s or early 90s when the whole 14th ave to Little Jetty beach had peaks? There were 6 well defined peaks, no closeouts. I've always wondered if anyone got that on film or whatever. It was amazing. All were both ways except for Blacks. Even Little Jetty had that odd little left going into the deep spot by the jetty. It was probably fall from how I remember it. Dang that was crazy seeing all those bars work at the same time.
@@seancallahan1312 Yes I do remember that. I used to shoot watershots on that stretch of beach. I left forever shortly thereafter, it doesn't do that anymore?
Shaun Tomson was the 1977 world champion, not 78. Best tube rider, backside tuberiding pioner, most influential surfer in the world from 1974 until 78/79, when Mark Richards and Cheyne Horan took the sport one step ahead.
Yes but I heard it wasn't fair as Peter Drouyn was in front and wasn't invited to compete at the last comp in Hawai, Shaun might have one anyway but it sus how they do that and push certain guys with the right sponsor.
Won his first pro event at 17, was on tour for 16 years, won 17 events...started Instinct in 1979....safe to say he had a solid run and walked off on his own terms.
@@andrewwood4013 Yes, I didn't have problem with him but other guys at Ventura point(pipe) did and he got chased out of there. He ends up at Oxnard Shores.
Loved this era in surfing I'm 62 and these guys with MR Rabbit PT Dane. Etc showed the world a whole new level of surfing. Great video
Agreed. The The talented Hawaiian surfers Of the 1970s and Dogtown skateboard crew for my idols back then growing up and still are

Shaun Tomson, Pottz, Buttons, Slater, Cheyne Horan, Christian Fletcher, etc. were all over my walls on posters when I was a kid. Great times!
Curren too
Dane Kealoha
I just made a Cheyne Horan shape for myself after many years. Very fun board.
@@keanul.5216 Forgot a couple. Curren was definitely on my wall. Remember the centerfold posters in the mags? Wish that I could go back just once!
@@laughteraddict1003 No doubt! Dane was a power house!

Great! thank you again. Great music.
A humble Legend who has never lost his stoke
Honored to know and have surfed with this man for over 50 years in various locations around the world. Th consummate gentleman.
Im 64, this is like watching my life in surfing pass before my eyes. Tom Curren and Shaun, they will always ride high in my eyes. Shalom to both
Dropping in 2nd reef pipe is sooo cool
Shawn is just plain rad !!! Great style and forever a legend !!!

YOH, DIFFERENT CLASS, LOVE IT... ❤
The rocker on that single fin is just wild, fantastic turns
The true spirit of surfing, Tomson is an all-time brilliant surfer

Time expands when you’re in the tube
So does his ego😂
The good ole days.

Water photographer. Clumsy one at that, most of us are extremely conscious of how we swim under.

Free Ride…Barrel riding pioneers
Huge backhand pipeline with no rail grab.
Saw Shawn speak about surfing Jeffrey’s Bay and how only he had the pure line…I was crest fallen by his arrogance…from hero to zero
'°°% respect vland Ralph 1986
It's been said that Simon's Thruster ended his career. I grew up watching all these guys, kings of the single fin.

Another zinger !!!!!!!!RSS
👍🍺🏄🏼
Back then we didn't grab the rail on the backside.
It was a different approach, the board didn't really allow to grab the rail line today
turning in the barrel on single fins…
Shaun Thomson admitting to be a barrel dodger is peak irony.
he could ride those single fins, what about the twin's footage?
Those clips on the black board he's on a twin fin.
That Pipe board was totally sketch
1CHiRST1' 1JESUS'1 is best surfer
He sucks; what an ego 🤷♂️
I have heard people say that about Michael Jordan, Muhammed Ali and Willie Mays as well 😂😂😂
