This is exactly the kind of video I need for learning about free diving for crabs. I got a good spot in Oregon where I live and every once in a while I can see the crabs walking and kept wishing I could just dive and grab them… now I have a snorkeling set and will be going out today somewhere that’s like 15’ deep. Can’t wait to implement these ideas later today
The start of the video has to be one of the most fascinating i have ever seen. I had no idea that the crabs and flat fish, probably sole, interact with each other like that. And it looks like they are constantly active. Love it.
Really great video! Thank you for sharing this resource. I live in the South Puget Sound, always been curious about free diving around here. This is the motivation I need!
Great video! Dungeness is my favorite and I used to dive for abs, but never got a hold of any dungess while out there. I've never seen footage like this and so many!
Very interesting to see this, as a OG diver here in the Pacific Northwest .. Diving for crab as always been a conversation of where to go, and don't tell anyone... Same with spearfishing.. Anyway interesting to find this video today on RUclips being a diver here in the Pacific Northwest.. 😄👍
Have lived in Washington my whole life. Just got back from one of our regular vacations to Florida. Did some spearfishing their with crap I bought on Amazon. About the most fun we've ever had in Florida. My son even pulled up a nice blue crab. Thought to myself, "Bummer you can't do this back home" and found your video. Obviously, Dungeness Crab (I live around Sequim) is delicious, but when I've seen people pull up pots I've wondered how the hell can there be any crabs LEFT in the world. I had no idea. 😳
Awesome footage, next time can you include some clips of you at the surface then diving and returning to surface without editing so we can practice our breath hold
Always cool to see a rat fish. Dove this spot alot of times good to see it again. Last time I dove it 15 years ago or more there where hundreds of giant sunflower seastars covering the bottom are they still abundant there? Anyway thanks for sharing your video.
My friend, the sunflower sea star was hit by some kind of blight or wasting disease starting around 2013 and the population is down to around 5% of where it used to be. Used to be, you’d pull one or two up with every crab pot. However, I haven’t seen one in years, either on a crab pot in deeper waters, or in free diving depths. They’re not exactly sure what caused it.
So did you say you chum for the crabs? Do you drop a chum bag and then wait for them to come in? Also what would you recommend for a wetsuit? I know zero about diving
I fully understand that. I mostly keep location out because I don't want completely new divers just giving it a try on their own. I prefer they take lessons, meet dive partners and explore or get introduced to spots. Plus figuring out spots and scouting is part of the fun!
@eberlinschwinn5634 the process to check if the Crab is legal in regards to both size and she'll harness requires 2 hands. So to maximize my harvest while on bottom, I check those two factors while on surface. I might not have it on this video but I'm normally coming up with 3-4 crab.
A warm shower waiting for you on Shore! I only make it down to Tillamook a few times a year, usually in fall. I am weak to cold and am plenty happy with my 7 there though a 5mm would be enough and I even know some crazy ppl who rock 3's.
For myself it's somewhat a personal preference. I do love diving so there's that. More often than not i can pull a full limit of crabs within an hour, some days it's just a few minutes. There's only a few locations where diving for crab is more time effective. Though if there's more people the productivity does tend to go down and eventually traps are better.
hey boss did you take any lessons or anything to get started? Diving seems daunting coming from someone who hasn't swum in open ocean much before. Any tips on how you get started would be awesome :)
Hey Bobby! As far as diving I learned that by trial and error as a kid. Spearfishing was a mix of the old Hawaii Skin Diver forum and VHS videos! I would later take a PFI intermediate course which helped me to be a safer diver. They now have several different dive organizations and programs to help get people who want to look into diving a little more seriously.
@asmodiusjones9563 I typically dive August into Sep. I usually get tired of crab by than and then after Oct is too cold for this fair weather diver haha. Play with your tides. Figure out what works best for you.
@ernestoguitron5851 sorry but I generally don't give locations for safety reasons. The sport of spearfishing/free diving takes lives every year. I don't generally give locations to prevent kids and brand new folks from attempting to go to these places and try it without any training or dive partners.

Apologizing for the quality of this video is crazy. This was perfect, man! Just pure footage and insight from a pro.
The start of the video has to be one of the most fascinating i have ever seen. I had no idea that the crabs and flat fish, probably sole, interact with each other like that. And it looks like they are constantly active. Love it.
Awesome video, Wow the bottom is swarming with crabs 🦀
It would be kind of fun to see more videos like this- quite enjoyable and informative.
This was a really cool video to watch, thanks for sharing!
Surprised how many crabs.
Hello Mukilteo or Edmonds. Both are good dive spots
Really great video! Thank you for sharing this resource. I live in the South Puget Sound, always been curious about free diving around here. This is the motivation I need!
Fantastic video I have lived there in wa. For 56 years. Moved to Louisiana a few months ago I miss the clear water!
Where in Louisiana? I lived there for 4 years, I miss spearfishing at the oil rigs!
Great video! Dungeness is my favorite and I used to dive for abs, but never got a hold of any dungess while out there. I've never seen footage like this and so many!
hell yea dude, great video. thats my favorite dive spot for crabs x)
So incredible! This adventure and harvest is life goals!

Dude this is freakin awesome. Thank you for this, and for showing how awesome our crab are!

I had no idea. 😳
Well done- big respect for breath hold
Super informative, thanks! Would love to learn how to dive
Awesome video
Nice I figured it was there or Edmonds
Awesome footage, next time can you include some clips of you at the surface then diving and returning to surface without editing so we can practice our breath hold
I'll do that! it's my goal to get you all another crab dive video, I'll keep this in mind on the edit.
Beautiful footage... What are the flat fish mingling with the crabs called?

That's awesome! I only ever see any type of sea stars on the pylons themselves.
Saw a ratfish in the wild for the first time when doing my AOW at Mukilteo last year, down at about 100 feet.

good stuff!
That’s a lot of crab wow!
So did you say you chum for the crabs? Do you drop a chum bag and then wait for them to come in? Also what would you recommend for a wetsuit? I know zero about diving
BRAVO!!! Yes let people find their own spots. I HATE youtubers that give locations.
I fully understand that. I mostly keep location out because I don't want completely new divers just giving it a try on their own. I prefer they take lessons, meet dive partners and explore or get introduced to spots. Plus figuring out spots and scouting is part of the fun!
That’s insane!
Great video and tips. When was this shot?
I want to say it was near the end of July
Great video. Why do you ascend to check the crab for keepers rather than doing it while you’re at depth?
@eberlinschwinn5634 the process to check if the Crab is legal in regards to both size and she'll harness requires 2 hands. So to maximize my harvest while on bottom, I check those two factors while on surface. I might not have it on this video but I'm normally coming up with 3-4 crab.
Hi sir what suit would you recommend for Oregon Tillamook Bay Area in winter months? Thank you
A warm shower waiting for you on Shore! I only make it down to Tillamook a few times a year, usually in fall. I am weak to cold and am plenty happy with my 7 there though a 5mm would be enough and I even know some crazy ppl who rock 3's.
Whats the reason for diving instead of using a crab cage? Personal preference?
For myself it's somewhat a personal preference. I do love diving so there's that. More often than not i can pull a full limit of crabs within an hour, some days it's just a few minutes. There's only a few locations where diving for crab is more time effective. Though if there's more people the productivity does tend to go down and eventually traps are better.
Also, please look up to make sure you’re not running into a swimmer as you surface. 🧜♀️
People aren’t swimming in the puget sound 🥶
@@Mangold2865 I swim in the Puget Sound daily, all year long! The water was too rough to swim, but I was in for 33 minutes today.
🙌

Thanks! I'll see if there's local organizations to start diving!@@okekai8353
I dive this place all the time and this is ten times the crab I normally see here. Is it that you are here early morning? What time of year is this?
@asmodiusjones9563
I typically dive August into Sep. I usually get tired of crab by than and then after Oct is too cold for this fair weather diver haha. Play with your tides. Figure out what works best for you.
11:23 I think that is a rat fish
So many crab
People have no idea how many crabs are in the bottom there.
Why are those fish swimming sideways?
I'm not great with fish names, but I believe it's a Starry Flounder.
I'm sorry but where is this? I'm new
@ernestoguitron5851 sorry but I generally don't give locations for safety reasons. The sport of spearfishing/free diving takes lives every year. I used a trout net to stop the crabs from running me out of air, to then do the sex check while trapped in net. Using scuba
I know where you are You're at Muk! :)
I'm from California and found this place in less than 2 min. EWP
Can you spear fish those sand dabs?
I'm not entirely sure. You'd have to look into regulations for the area as well as any health concerns for the area.
you can't use anything that will pierce the shell to capture the crabs. snares, traps, nets and hands only.
Badasss
Pylons❓
those are called columns not pillars
Pilings….
The plural of crab is crab.
i cant hear anything .
