This song has everything that was good about old school R&B from that era and gives us just enough new generation visuals and sound to draw me in 100%. I absolutely believe the music. It isn't forced or a cheap reimagining. Faithful to that classic sound, respecting the influences and making old school new again.
You're right on point here. The "mad genius"-level mastermind behind XG (short for Xtraordinary Girls) is Simon Jakops, who was a successful K-Pop idol a good decade ago himself. But Simon had and has a vision: he formed a group and trained them with the classic K-Pop idol methods to NOT perform K-Pop but instead western 90s/early 2000s style R&B and rap. Modern Old School if you want, and a unique concept. Their label XGALX was specifically created for this. The result are these seven Japanese ladies, age 18 to 21 as of now, who are basically a seven member professional dancing crew with four rappers (Jurin, Maya, Cocona, Harvey) who can also sing and three singers (Chisa, Juria, Hinata) who can also rap. They do experiment with other subgenres as well, up to some EDM-Hip Hop-ish mix, but at its core it is all rooted in the 90s/y2k era. And, they all dance so well you would think they are a dance crew. They have 10 singles out. You just watched #3. Their debut was "Tippy Toes" and their second song is "Mascara". They also do side projects to highlight the members. They have the "Tape" series (1, 2, 3a and 3b) for the rappers and the "Vox" series (1 - 5) for the vocalists.
