This episode shows very well what Eren is like as a person and a character. A cold-blooded and brutal murder out of revenge and for the sake of salvation at the age of 9, imagine a 9-year-old guy planning the murder of two adult men, and not a drop of fear in his eyes, only hatred for those who spoil Mikasa's life. Fight and live , fight, fight, fight . After that, a manifestation of love and care for her , trying to show with his face that he is cool and he doesn't care, but actually blushes. There are a lot of sides to Eren, and that's why he is absolutely my favorite character, and the second one is not even close
Okay so as far as we know, a 100 years ago the titans appeared and made humanity almost extinct, but a small portion of humanity built the walls and fled there. Mikasa's oriental descendants were originally from the east before the appearance of the titans and managed to get to the walls and survive.

The geography of this world is still a mystery at this point so we can't say anything but it'll be revealed eventually.
