I to am left eye dominant and right handed. To really confuse the issue further, I lost the last digit of my left index finger. I do really enjoy your videos and have learned so much. Thank you for all you do, keep up the good work, we need your expertise. God bless.

Because I was right handed I shot right handed growing up until I got into the Marine Corps.
Then I learned that I couldn't hit the target as well because my left eye was dominant, so I learned how to shoot left-handed in bootcamp with the M16 and became an expert shot by learning how to shoot correctly; left eye dominant = left shoulder shooting.
Anyone struggling with being right-handed and left-eyed I recommend learning how to hold the rifle against your left shoulder and using a left-handed rifle.
In using your preferred eye you'll hit the target more often because you'll see tons better.
Believe me when I say it's a heck of a lot easier than trying to shoot right-handed with a left dominant eye.

I just wanted to say thanks for this lesson on eye dominance. My sons and their wives and their children went shooting this past week. All are right handed but we did the test and learned that one of my sons and two of my grandchildren are left eye dominant. My son switched over to left hand shooting with the rifles and likely will never shoot right handed again. No problem for him. We will have to work with the kids but now know where to start. We appreciate your teaching. Thanks again.

This is a timeless video. Anyone interested in this subject should also research Amblyopia. As you mentioned driving a car down the road and closing a normal seeing eye will cause a loss of depth perception. This is how I have functioned since childhood. I am right handed and my right eye is Amblyopic. Until I realized this I could not shoot a rifle. I now shoot left-handed rifle and right handed handgun as you demonstrated.. I have had to deal with a lack of depth perception throughout life. I can drive. No accidents. Have learned to pull a horse trailer etc but with much difficulty and compensating actions. I do not know when I will hit the ground when jumping down from on high, would not be able to qualify for a pilots license, may miss your offered hand for handshake, etc. However I retired as a Dental specialist who used a surgical operating microscope to successfully perform procedures. Where there is a will there is a way. 2-3 % of the population has some form of this condition. There are also great combat instructors like Mike " Noner" Pannone who lost his dominant eye in combat.Where there is a will there is a way if one is aware of his limitations and learns to compensate and adjust to achieve the desired result. I am now 71 and really enjoy your depth of knowledge and expertise.

I'm right handed but left eye dominant. Got a lot of bloody noses as a kid from trying to get my head far enough over to see the sights with my left eye. Thankfully my dad noticed the problem one day and had me transition the gun to my left shoulder where I could use my dominant eye. Problem solved and have been shooting long guns left handed ever since. Great video and I'm sure it will help a lot of people!

As a former instructor dominance issues were some of the most common, and occasionally hotly debated shooting criticisms I gave. In my short career of shooting instruction, I ran into some surprisingly antiquated misconceptions and prejudices concerning left-handedness and handedness in general.
I was told that 15% of the population is cross dominant when I was being trained to instruct, and found this to be pretty close to what I found in my students. In a class of 8-12 students there was usually one, sometimes two cross dominant. I noticed left eye dominance paired with right hand dominance was most common, which wasn't so bad, I have that combination of cross dominance and I had a few techniques to simplify shooting a right handed gun left handed (my organization did not have the forethought to purchase left-handed guns).
The simple facts the matter are this; hands train pretty easy, most people can develop pretty decent ambidexterity in a set of skills if they try; eyes are much more difficult to train in general, and as far as purposefully changing dominance, I've never seen or even heard of any successful attempts. I've been yelled at by a parent, even though their kid shot better when I had them shoot with their dominant. This parent had been trying for years to improve his sons his non-dominant eye. He told me it had been damaged, and I think he was trying to prevent a lazy eye by "working it". I'm not sure if an actual doctor had recommended this or not, but even though he went out shooting weekly or more for a few years, he could not force his eye dominance to change.
I will disagree with one point: -while a person cannot purposefully change their eye dominance to my knowledge- eyes can change dominance. One reason why a given eye is dominant may be because it has better vision than the other: if for some reason that disparity in vision changes, eye dominance can change with it. I had some damage to my right eye as a young man, and found out much later that my eye dominance was no longer matched up with my right-handedness. Also, I have known firearms instructors who, after having laser eye surgery, found that the eye that got worked on had better vision after healing than their dominant eye, and that the previously non-dominant eye eventually became dominant.
Perhaps more importantly, this suggests that it may not even be beneficial to change eye dominance. My dominant eye has far better vision (20/20) than my non-dominant eye. When I switched to shooting left-handed my grouping diameter was halved immediately. My very first group on the left was half the size of my best groups on the right. Shooting is first "seeing" then "doing" - hands just aren't nearly as important as eyes.
I've found the awkward thing about being cross dominant and not always having a left-handed gun is not shooting (hands are easy to train), but reloading or working the action, especially bolt action guns if there is a time constraint, the controls to be manipulated are just not readily available. Since I'm an almost strictly recreational shooter, this doesn't really come into play, and every gun I've owned has been a right handed gun. If I ever decide to compete I'll definitely want a lefty gun, though.
I mostly wrote this much about it because of the many many many small children who insisted they knew better, and the frustration thereby developed. Are there support groups for former firearms instructors?

    • @GunBlue490
      @GunBlue490  6 лет назад

      Jermaine Race
Fortunately, a watchful instructor who identifies the cross dominance issue has already addressed most of the problem, which can be remedied one way or the other, however is more comfortable for the student. Gun makers are now offering far more left handed firearms than ever, which makes adaptation pretty easy for those who desire to shoot well and who will work at it. In my teaching experience, the identification of these issues are first, before any formal training begins. You might like to know that CMP has also incorporated this into their civilian marksmanship program, which is along the same model that I presented in this video.

    • @b.santos8804
      @b.santos8804 5 лет назад

Jermaine Race, thanks for your story. I'm a recreational shooter who is naturally right eye dominant, and, when shooting guns, also right handed. (I am left handed when it comes to tasks requiring fine motor coordination, such as writing, eating with utensils, brushing teeth, etc.)
So, I've always had no problem holding guns with my right hand, and aligning the sights with my right eye. This is the way 95% of firearms are designed. My problem is that now, my right eye has deteriorated to the point where I can no longer see clearly with it, even with the help of corrective lenses.
So, I am now trying to train myself to shoot using my left eye as the "new" dominant eye, and have been scouring the Internet and RUclips especially to discover techniques to help me along this path. I haven't yet bought any purpose-built lefty rifles, but just practicing shouldering a rifle on my left, and looning down the sights with my left eye (which isn't dominant, but still has good vision) gets easier with more and more repetitions.

long story short. My mom who was a teacher/elementary school guidance counselor wrote a chapter in a colleagues book. This Dr. felt that most learning disabilities arose from how children "saw" things. That their was some sort of disconnect with the brain and what was being seen. Forgive me if I didn't quite get this right. I think I was in the 3rd grade at the time.

This is a FANTASTIC video! Thank you! :)
I am left eye dominant and shoot lefty (but was trained/re-trained to shoot handguns weak handed (righty) if I have to - back when I qualified in an armed security course).
Allow me to tell a story... Back in the 70's my dad bought me a Marlin model 60 .22 rifle, back when I was 14 years old. We went out into the woods in upstate NY and he taught me how to shoot. But, I couldn't hit the broadside of a barn. I couldn't see. My dad explained and explained, and I ended up whining to him, "But, dad... I see two barrels, or I see two targets!" My dad thought for a moment, looked at me kind of funny, and said, "Lefty? My boy is a lefty?" And to make a long story short, he switched me and the little Marlin .22 over to my left side, and instantly I saw the sights and the target perfectly! Bang, bang, bang... I was hitting the bullseye. In 1979, I joined the US Coast Guard right out of high school, and remember trying to shoot the M16 on the rifle range. The range officers screamed and hollered at me, and I kept crying out, "Sir! I'm left handed, Sir!" to no avail. I failed rifle qual, and failed and failed. Finally on my last magazine, I begged and pleaded with the range officer to allow me to shoot lefty. Angrily, the range officer said something like, "Okay kid, this your last chance... Do it your way... I don't know nothing, I don't see nothing. You get hurt, I'm not responsible..." due to the ejecting M16 shells ejecting out in front of me. But lo and behold... Not only did I qualify on the M16 - I was *one shot* away from earning Sharpshooter and getting an "S" on my ribbon for my uniform.
GunBlue490 - Sir, your videos are fantastic and teaches everyone of all levels the ins and outs of firearms. Keep up the great work! :)

Great video! My 11 year old daughter is right-handed, but left eye dominant. I've been trying to figure out what the best way to start her out into firearms might be. I put a red dot sight on her Daisy BB gun and had her shooting both eyes open and she was doing well with that setup. My friend's dad said he was in the same situation and the Army made him get used to shooting left side. He said the sooner I start her doing that the better. Sounds like you are echoing that advice so I will start getting her to shoot left-handed soon. Thanks so much for the great content, you are so generous with your knowledge. I love seeing you with the Garand, I have an HRA from the Korean War Era I got from the CMP. I used to shoot it all the time out in the desert when I lived in AZ. That was when the CMP would FedEx 250 rounds of Lake City M2 Ball to my door for $70! I miss those days for sure! God bless you and your wife and Bennie!

I'm cross dominant and never had any issue shooting from the opposite shoulder. It's a myth that this needs to be corrected. If I tried putting a rifle in my eye dominant shoulder, I'd be so awkward handling the firearm that it would be senseless to try it and maybe even dangerous. The dominant eye can be closed to increase the focus on the sights, however I've also used red dot with both eyes open and it worked perfectly. The side I do writing, golf club, baseball bat, racket sports, rifle, and archery is all on the right, even though I'm left eye dominant. However hockey stick is on the left. I'm well over 50, so I'm not going to try to change any orientation I was born with. No one forced me to do anything with either side - I always picked what worked for me.

Also, I'm not sure about trying to change over at this stage of my life, but its food for thought. I think I've always just used my weak eye when shooting rifles (closing my left eye), maybe that's why I'm only a so-so shooter. As always I respect your opinion.

I am right handed (well 75% ambidextrous) but have always shot long guns left handed. I have tried many of the ways to find ones eye dominance but I have never been able to find a clear winner. My main issue seems to be the inability to close only my left eye. I have only recently started shooting pistol but shoot right hand left eye (right eye closed), I will try leaving both eyes open and see how that works.

Excellent, thank you! I'm a lefty who was forced to write right-handed in elementary school. As an aside, when I started playing guitar on my 7th birthday, the teacher who started me off made me play right-handed, because he said he wouldn't be able to teach me if I played lefty. Weird! Anyway, I still write (badly) and play guitar (far better) right-handed, but I do much prefer to shoot , throw a ball, etc. with my left hand. I can actually shoot pretty well right-handed if forced to do so, but it feels unnatural. I'm also left-eye dominant, so at least I'm consistent in that department. I should mention that although I don't write well or comfortably right-handed, I have gone on to play guitar right-handed professionally. So it's not all bad. ;-)

I'm left eye dominant and right handed; that's the way I was born. I found this out as kid when I started with archery and found I couldn't hit the broad side of a barn - no consistency because I couldn't sight along the arrow. Switching dominant eyes is impossible for me. Believe me I tried. I had an instance where I had to wear a patch for nearly a month on my dominate eye and my vision was fouled up for the next year. It is a LOT easier to switch to left hand holding.
Ergo I prefer lever actions instead of bolt actions and shoot left handed. Shotguns aren't a problem shooting lefty. In fact the very first time I handled a shotgun I hit every clay target! 5 out of 5. Yes, there are left hand bolts but reselling and even gifting a left hand firearm is next to impossible.

I had a student in hunter education who was about 12 when he took the class who was taught to shoot with his right hand since he was right handed. During the class we taught the students to determine which eye is their dominant eye. He thought he was doing the exercise incorrectly when he said his left eye was his dominant eye. His dad couldn't believe it either, but was sold on the exercise when he took his son to the gun range that same evening and had him shoot his 22 rifle with his left hand and saw his groups improve drastically. It's amazing how we can bias our thinking.

Funny thing is i am right eye dominant and left hand dominant. Like i can't actually grip a gun and shoot with my right hand so with pistols it don't really matter much but comes to rifles it matters more as my grip is only secure in my left hand and i have tried training both. With me it was no attempt to force dominant hands after me initially refusing it is more so genetics making my dominant eye the right one near sided while my left one is far sided.
What i noticed is you can shoot rifles lefthanded just fine as long as you have a good scope so you can line up the front sight with your dominant eye and looking through the scope with the weaker eye with both eyes open to get the best sight picture. The only issue with rifles as a left handed person is the gas coming out from the ejection port if the load was a bit too spicy or there was a failure, we don't mind the charging handle as that is more convenient for us as we don't have to break line of sight or grip just to rack it again

    Dear Sir,
    I like your channel.
I think I switched eye dominance. I was born with a lazy lid on my right eye. I had an operation in 1964 when I was three to correct this...my earliest memory. I wore a bandage for a month, then an eye patch for two more. At the time, I was not aware of dominance, but I think it may have moved. I was taught 22 cal rifle shooting by my father at age 6 or 7, and he always told me to close my left eye because he said that was how it was done. I think he was taught that in WW2 in the US Infantry or learned this growing up in the south during the depression where they shot feral pigs for food. Never the less eye dominance never came up.
I became very nearsighted, much more so on my left than my right. At the age of 30, I had a detached retina which was operated on requiring another bandage, this time on my left eye. The operation caused my left eye to wander. In my late 30's I got back into shooting with sporting clays, and after extensive reading, I became aware of dominance....that I was cross dominant. But because of my second operation, it forced me to use my less dominant eye, So my dominance floats back & forth. Also, since my left eye is more myopic, my eye dominance shifts with different glasses. I use my distance glasses for revolver shooting and keep both eyes open, lining the sights up with the left eye. But when rifle shooting, I need to wear my old reading glasses to see the rear sight. With these glasses, I can see the target fairly well with my right eye, but the left eye reading prescription blurs the target, so my brain zeros in on my right, less dominant eye. With shotgun shooting I need to use distance glasses. I keep both eyes open until I find the target, the close the left eye just prior to firing.
    Cheers
    Andre D lelong

It is possible to change eye dominanceby actively suppressing the visual field of the dominant eye. This is achieved with an eye patch bandage that covers the dominant eye, with adhesive tape around the patch perimeter. Another form of treatment is laser eye surgery.

I am left eye dominant (right eye is 20/70) and right-handed. I lost the last digit on my thumb on my right hand. I shoot rifle left-handed, handgun right-handed. always using the left eye. I do not wear glasses as it is confusing for me. I can shoot rifle either-handed. I am going to learn to shoot handgun left-handed. In 1979 I was forced to qualify for the service with M16 right-handed I put 90 of 90 in my target. The first 10 went in my neighbor's target. As this was all he got there wasn't much doubt.

As a child I was forced by my parents , to learn to use my right hand . Now as and old man i felt the need to get a handgun for self and family protection. While taking my gun class , I missed the entire target entirely and continued to miss the entire target. I was so embarrassed I could hardly speak. But no one at the range said or told me anything about eye dominance. I was so bad of a shot the instructors hated to see me come in to the range. I struggled with this for over a year. I finally went to the eye doctor and told him my story. He and only he told me I was left eye dominant. So I'm stuck with being right handed but left eye dominate. Believe me it's not as easy as you say to make this change. Now as an old 64 year old man I'm ok with the handgun I can at least hit the target. But with my shot gun I have to almost break my neck to get my left eye over my shotgun. It is not as easy as you say shooting a shotgun.

I typically don't use such phrases as "it's easy", in the context of learning, and especially in the context of gaining control over a contradicting physical issue. My purpose in presenting this video is to identify, help and offer solutions for you and others in this boat. I cannot assure anyone that it will be easy or successful. My personal experience has been that most folks who are cross dominant can learn to use their weak side satisfactorily enough to enjoy the sport. If you were forcibly converted as a youth, you are still the product of the genes you were born with. That's a far better place to work from than those who were born cross dominant. Please watch my instructional shooting videos, which may perhaps help also.

I am right handed, left eye dominant. Add to that my eyes are light sensitive, but my right eye significantly more so. If I don't wear sunglasses, my right eye is shut some of the time while I'm out in the sun! My left eye hardly ever needs to close. If I remember correctly, when I first started shooting with a BB gun, I would shoulder on the right side yet use my left eye. Now, it feels unnatural to shoulder on my right side. A handgun doesn't seem to matter, though. Shooting bolt actions left handed can be somewhat annoying, but at that point I'm usually not going for speed anyway. :)

Hello I read through the comments and nobody thoroughly mentioned this so..... some people who are physically ambidextrous must use both hands (thumbs over lapped) or their left thumb will line up with their left eye and right thumb lines up with their right eye.....and a very small percentage of people will not get consistant results even when using both hands (when using both hands and lining up a target whichever hand that is closer to my face is the one my eye lines up with).... I know this cause I don't have a "dominant" eye/hand...
Thanks for your video and great valuable information as usual.

As a helicopter flight instructor for the Army here in Alabama the "dominant eye" was a sometimes discussed issue with my students. I happen to be a natural right hander with a (used to be) dominant left eye. I say used to be because twenty or so years ago I accidentally leaned into a thorn with my left eye, blurring that vision just enough that I was subtly forced over time to "move" to a right eye perspective.
It's my understanding that the Army sometimes has problems with students who cannot adapt to the type of heads up displays they have to deal with while transitioning to AH-64 gunships because of dominant eye issues. Perhaps some of your subscribers with real experience dealing with these types of issues could offer advice from their aeromedical point of view.

It’s amazing the simplicity as you teach it. David Smith I attended a full-time armorers course held at the Ruger factory in Newport, NH. This comprehensive one week course instructed me in the building and maintenance of Ruger arms. I am currently maintained on their official list of certified armorers.
Sight acquisition with the off side eye is best accomplished by most people with their strong eye closed. It requires practice. With handguns, it's not imperative, except that the head becomes more exposed.

    • @GunBlue490
      @GunBlue490  6 лет назад

You can try that, or simply use a patch over your left eye for target shooting. If you are shooting with a scope, I would not open both eyes, because they are not seeing the same picture anyway. Shooting with both eyes open is not that vital. Many skilled shooters shoot with one eye closed, or they modify by keeping them open and wink just before the shot. That gives them the advantage of depth of field for tracking and mono-vision for the shot..

But as a result it has made my left eye dominate witch i notice a lot now i have glasses for my right eye !!! I i have seen that you can train your eyes over time to swap dominance from 1 to the other as the body does on it own if it needs to !! As it did in my case !!! Im not 100% sure if all this mumbo jumbo is correct or not bit it is what i have read and been told !!! With a rifle i can actually seem to make my right eye take over somehow !!! I dont have any idea how but with a shotgun i cant !! So i just try to mount the gun the same all the time and never bother looking at the gun at all and only focus on the target !!! Witch apparently that is what you should be doing with a shotgun anyhow !!! I absolutely love your videos and love your wealth of knowledge so please keep them up !!i sit for hours watching them !!! You are normal. The human eye naturally focuses on larger close images, unless a concerted effort is made to look beyond. Training that aspect of vision to clarify the front sight is what makes great shooters. It takes effort. This is the reason that peep sights are fabulous, because an eye likes to look through pinholes which is a small artificial iris, which gives vision great depth of field.

You said you never met someone that was ambidextrous with their eyes, and that if a person was they would always see two images. Well, while I like many of your videos, on this particular matter you are mistaken. I am right handed and left eye dominant, yet when I pick up a bow or rifle and have it under my right eye, my brain has automatically compensated for such by switching my perspective to sight down the item and use my right eye during those times...and it happens quickly...pretty much instantly I would guess. And when I have something between an object and my left eye (say my thumb or another item), it is very easy for me to see around it with my other eye to pick up the image that has its field of view blocked to my dominant eye...and I am 100% certain my eyes are not unique or any different than anyone else's. It is just a skill that we learn. Without this skill the bindon aiming concept (promoted by trijicon/acog) wouldn't work. We all can do it.

So I recently found out I have a cross eyed dominance. Which now makes sense because hockey, lacrosse, baseball(actually this I could do both handed) I shot or hit left. However when I pick up a rifle right handed is the only way I can physically make the dam thing work. I've tried shooting left from a .22 to my cannon of a Marlin 45/70 everytime I drop the gun or it goes flying. Which is unacceptable to say the least. It's not like my left side is so weak I just don't do anything with it ever. However when shooting a rifle right handed I'm able to hit moving, and still targets no problem. So I'm inclined to just carry on. I'm not closing my left eye. I used to do that at the range all the time but now I just keep it open unless I'm looking down optics. Maybe I've just done it long enough right handed where my right eye has figured it out.

    • @GunBlue490

If you are shooting well, there is no need to alter things, unless you really feel the need to open both eyes. Shooting from the off-side might be something to practice for a while to see if it works, but the most important thing is that you can be comfotable and accurate. This was intended more for those who have not yet established a good shooting platform, and are working from scratch, or who cannot close the dominant eye. My wife is a southpaw, but was a switch shooter for many years, until she finally conformed to the dominant right eye, which she is very comfortable with, and now has no limits of gun availability.

Cross dominance is very tricky when teaching adults how to shoot. I've trained hundreds of people and if you're trying to get a person who's been writing, eating and throwing a ball for 35 years with their right hand to shoot with their left you're in for trouble especially if you're eventually going to teach them how to draw their weapons form concealment. I'm obviously speaking about pistols.

It is certainly one of the best all around cartridges, highly desireable for medium to large game, and range effectiveness not far behind the 270 Winchester, by about only 45 yards. Close range velocity is not overly destructive on deer. Terrific ballistic coefficient and sectional density, with
moderate recoil in light guns, and the ability to keep velocities near max with standard barrels. Its one of the best cartridges for those desiring to carry ultra short barrels, producing over 2,700 fps in most 18 inch tubes. The 140 grain bullet with identical ballistic coefficient to the 165 grain 30 caliber, and 130 grain 270 bullet is sufficient for just about everything, and has very good striking power and penetration. I recently sold mine, which I carried on deer hunts for 32 years.

FACT - Left handed people are the only ones in their right mind. Sadly, I have to admit I'm right handed.
So I just discovered, using your thumb method, that I am unmistakably left eye dominate. Funny, I've never noticed before. I've been shooting long guns right handed for 6 decades with no problems. I guess I've just trained myself to close my left eye when necessary. Weird thing is, I keep both eyes open when using a shotgun or handgun. I definitely close my left eye when shooting scoped rifles, yet keep both eyes open when using a red-dot or reflex optic.
Bottom line... I am a very confused & conflicted person. After all these years maybe my wife is correct when she says, "You definitely have issues!" ;-P
