I prefer black and white with maps. But this was a very entertaining video. As always great job.

Coloured pencils may be a good choice for map colourings, too.
Also, as an artist, my advice as far as cold press vs. hot press watercolour paper is that it depends on what you're going for. Cold press has more texture to the paper, which lends itself well to looser art styles, but if you want a lot of fine details, then go with hot press, which is much smoother.
BTW, I love your fantasy map series and it's the reason I subbed to you. :-) The map series has really inspired me to create my own fantasy maps-- not necessarily for games (though that sounds fun, too), but just for the art/creativity aspect of it. :-) I may have some map paintings to share soon(ish)!

Agree. Inktense from Derwent work well.

Some people will scribble one of the markers on an acrylic block then dilute with water to get a more consistent color saturation to use on large areas. Basically using the brush marker color and using it like regular watercolor with a brush. This makes these brushes flexible as you can use the ink straight out of the pen for fine details but us the same color diluted for larger less defined areas.

Hi, I've just arrived to your channel (like 2 days ago, although I had seen some videos a few months ago too) and I wanted to know if you have any video where you explain how to do cities, towns, etc (apart from the video of names for cities, which I think is not enough to choose and learn, I mean, you say the kind of symbol you use but you don't show other options). If not, it might be a good idea doing a video about that?
    Thank you!
PS: I love your videos ✌🏼

I really like the water color, I hope you revisit this and maybe even take a class. Mixing the ink and water color is kind of ideal for this. I was also thinking you could do some kind of wax layer for your rivers and lakes to keep them nice and clear and then remove the wax and add in your blues. For sure use a regular brush when you think that would work better, a multi media brush+watercolor pen+pen and ink+plus maybe some acrylic detailing would be amazing

Personally, I'm working on a watercolour map right now, and I like to colour in the rivers in light prismacolour pencil, paint the land, erase the pencil a little with a kneaded eraser, and paint in the river in very undiluted blue. It's working well for me!

And here I was thinking and sayin: what if Nate made a colored map? And here it is. Can't believe I didn't see this when it came out. Anxious to see what you can come up with some more practice.

Hello, just wanted to drop you a comment to let you know that I'm really enjoying your channel. I've wanted to try my hand at D&D for a long time and was recently invited by a coworker to play my first game of D&D in a couple of weeks. While doing a bit of online research in preparation I found your videos and have found all the ones I've watched to be well made and very informative. They've helped get me even more excited about playing. Thanks for your efforts in making the game more accessible and understandable to newcomers. Best regards!

this comment is a bit late, but I’m doing map of an ice world.
it’s pretty neat to implement your techniques, and the painting with even fewer colours.
I’m using acryllic paint though. It takes a bit longer when you have to wait for map to dry once in a while.
But so far it looks pretty cool.

You are still getting the stain from the initial maker on your paper ,you would get a better effect if you used watercolour paper , iv have 2 sets of these and I find them brilliant but yes just letting you know 😂😂

The fact that i can't buy specific colors is a no-no for me. Don't need a pink / violet / purple etc... and they will always sell them within a pack. Gonna stick with the oldschool brush and paint ^^

    • @WASD20
      @WASD20  6 лет назад

I hear ya. The lack of individual colors is a factor that wouldn't be a problem for coloring one map, but for long term use it would be very frustrating.

But in all honesty, it’s hard to defeat the classic black pen on aged parchment.
