Electronics, Instruments, and Apps for Flying: My Flight Deck Tour and The Best Vario

- Friday night, a cold beer, new eyewear, and all the gadgets on my flight deck. The Oudie Basic by Naviter has and still is my main game on the deck. But when it developed a bad habit of not coming on when needed, I checked current offerings and found a nice option offered in the XC Tracer Mini 3 GPS. I was so happy with the functionality and superior variometer offered by the XC Tracer, I have since fixed the Oudie and now use them in conjuction with each other, looking at the Oudie, while listening to the Tracer. Also, Garmin Inreach mini, and a couple of phone apps I click occasionally. I pit the two varios in a head to head match in the studio to demonstrate the sensitivity of the tracer vs. oudie. Hope you enjoy!

This was another good informative video. Actually had me cracking up in more than a few spots 😂
Always informative and as always funny.
Heck of a setup you got there! Just about a full panel. 😁👍🍻
I thought I stumbled onto the Kyle O biceps workout video. I don't know why, but you really cracked me up sitting there with your arms going up and down. If your wife gets a glimpse of that, she'll be on the phone to a psychiatrist.
I love my Oudie, I finally splashed for the Oudie 5 upgrade with the FLARM.. I need more time to see how good it is.
I never learned mine Oudie 4...any links for very good learnings?
Holy crap Batman...One of my greatest joys of being a Private Pilot is using Foreflight. I also have this little ADS-B receiver so I think that will come in handy when I'm around airports. I'm still trying to figure out all my comms i.e. Sena/Radio. Next step...complete training. I wish I lived near you so I could train with you. No worries though, I have a good instructor.
Nice callout to Lindsay Matuch! I've flown with her. She's a quality person!
XCTracer actually has a new Vario called Max, which has a Display.
Nice video ✌️
I am still using my old Flytec 4040 Race for a vario. I really need to update it. Thanks for the video I am sure it cost me money.
Kettle is on! : D
Brilliant 👍
That beer is making me jealous 🥺
Spit it out...Much love. Stay safe everyone!!!
@4:00 that mirror has been there for a while lol. Seen it in many videos.
So now you’re a instrument conductor. 😉
That cop story is interesting...
Nice one Kyle. If I were to just get the XC tracer mini 3 gps and link it to Flyskyhy on an ipad mini would that be as good as the Oudie?
Greg Anthony Harris it would be a bit of a fudge but you’d have the basics. However, iPad is bigger, battery life a lot worse (Oudie 12hrs), screen highly reflective plus not that good outside, plus screen needs finger touch whereas Oudie is pressure sensitive. I used to fly with Flyshyhy but now have the Oudie 5. I also prefer the airspace maps from Naviter, which are updated regularly. However advantage Flyskyhy has is use of satellite maps (if wanted) but that’s never bothered me when flying.
Another trick I like with the Oudie is the ability to plan XCs on the PC and then upload the route to the Oudie, all very simply.
I don't think anything out there offers as much as the Oudie does as far as visual data representation/batt life/and thermal mapping. The XCTM3GPS will link to many many apps and devices. I've still not explored the full function of this unit. It works though, the solar power is my 2nd favorite thing next to the incredibly sensitive vario. I've taken to turning the volume off on the Oudie, and only using it for my visual data source while listening to the XCT. After using it for almost a year now, the XCT is definitely worth it. I do wish it were a bit louder for use with motor, but that's really the only detraction.
Kyle O'Glee thanks Dude, I will now binge watch Oudie videos 🤣
Greg Anthony Harris if you do that be prepared to splash the cash. I even downloaded the manual for a real tech fest before I ordered mine 😄
Kyle, I fly a Dudek Power Comfort harness on my paramotor. Is there a flight deck that fits that harness?
Flight decks aren't always specific to harnesses. Most just clip on such as lap mounted reserve containers.
Preventative maintenance. You change the oil in your truck right? Wait until that’s broke and it’s going to be expensive. Update your avionics, simple preventative maintenance.
Hey stereo-vario! Now I'll have to go make a song with beeps (like PCD but flying!
Or, if you get an Android device, go and try XCtrack - it is an awesome app that has everything for XC pilot, all in one. For me it works great on my Mate20 which has built in accelerometr and baro. You can check my channel and see a short (low quality - sorry) video of how it performs - it's not better than XCtracer hehe ;) but sometimes it's better than my flymaster GPS SD.
I've tried XCtrack for a while. I found the interface to be kinda hard to use at times. Have since switched to an app called PPGPS. For me, that works really nice and is simple to use. It has all the basic bells and whistles that you could want and you can also connect external varios to it.
@@samik83 Maybe you should give it a try once again. Default template may be too weird, I don't use it. Instead of this you can create your own screens with exactly what you need by just placing widgets. You can move them, resize and costumize data. You can also connect external sensors via USB or BT. You can instal road maps, topo maps, airspace maps, configure alert trigers and authomatic screen changes, alpha version has also live tracking and messages. You can also set some buttons shortcuts, etc.
You're up early on a Saturday buddy.
where are u located? I would like to get some first time training .....im in jersey and would like to drive down with a camper and stay for a few days

Kyle, your opening had a religious bent. I thought were going to read from Sermon on the Mount. Peace be with you my son!
P.S. How do you get off the ground with all that crap?
With quality gear and good techniques Bill!
