I had an 88 Samurai in the mid-90's. I took it from San Antonio to AZ to go hunting. On the way out there it is uphill and into the wind and the max I could do was 55 in the 75 on I10. The truckers were passing me and honking and I would rock and roll from their wind. In AZ, that thing was amazing. It was so light and nimble and I could go where my father in his F250 couldn't because of the ground clearance, short wheelbase, and light weight. On the way back I was probably as scared as I have ever been in my life (including my deployments in Afghanistan LOL). I had the speedometer pegged going downhill and with a nice tailwind and all I could see were dead deer all over the road and all I could feel was the old girl shaking apart like we were reentering Earth's atmosphere. I had no idea at the time but now I think I ended needing something as simple as a head gasket, plus I was getting ready to move from TX, so I sold it and got a Ford Ranger. I still kick myself in the behind every day for selling that Samurai. That still has to be the most fun vehicle I have ever owned. Soft top, stick shift, and ready to roll. I didn't have AC which did make it a little uncomfortable in TX in the summer that we had thirty days straight of over 100 degree temperatures and pulling off the top made driving down the road feel like you were in front of your oven with a fan in the oven blowing on your face...but it was still just Awesome!!
Also if you are a "I do my own maintenances" type of guy, older Honda CR-Vs (Mk1 or Mk2) with M/T are very reliable allrounders. They are not the best on the road for gas consumption, but not the worst. They are not the best on poor roads, but they get the job done and you are not stuck in the snow or mud. Spareparts are dirt cheap, because they share most parts with Civics except the 4x4 related parts. My first -99 CR-V had 457 000km/284 000mi on it, when I sold it and it still ran great. My current -05 is doing great, but rust is starting to settle in (336 000km/209 000mi so far.)
No jeep owner would be mad at this video. Jimney is a great vehicle and the last great jeep was the TJ, before it got screwed by the EPA and Chrysler entirely. I will say though, jeeps are some of the last vehicles you can easily get in the states that still come with a stick shift option and a body on frame design. It's also great at taking a deer to the grill on the highway at 80mph. I've done that trick twice and my jeep came out only losing one fog light.
I mildy agree to this as a JL owner, I love my JL and also JK’s, but a TJ is going to be my secondary Jeep, hard to beat the 4.0 and auto/manual at the end of the day

Count me as someone who has owned 3 Jeeps, and currently drives a Wrangler Sahara, that has ALWAYS wished he could have bought a new Jimny instead. I've driven several as rentals when on vacation, and the Jimny is always a blast to drive (even the 3rd gen!).
As a Jeep owner, I have a 2004 TJ with lockers etc. and a 1953 M38A1 with limited slips in it and some other goodies, Ill say that I have been interested in other offroaders for their legendary durability and unique design features. Ive always been curious about the Jimny and the Samurai, their drivetrains are pretty interesting! Ive also wanted to check out the old school UAZ 400 series as well as Pinzgauer 6 wheel models. What keeps me on board with Jeep however is accessibility. Jeeps are common in the US, and the older ones (TJ and older) are cheap, easy to repair and have an abundance of parts available. If I could get my hands on a UAZ or a Jimny, I would... And still keep the Jeeps so I can play with all of them.
The wild-wind, the rippin and the tearin. Great review, I want a Jimny so bad. I search daily for my one but its been a long struggle- I think it will be like love. When I see her I'll know
As a WRX owner I don't know what is worse, being associated with vaping or being associated with dumbasses with rubber ducks on the dash. The retro commercials are great. Showing cars doing things that nobody would do like driving up flights of stairs instead of using the perfectly paved road that would be a shorter drive.
It was to illustrate that if you needed to go over a curb or any other minor inconvenience that it would not only do so but do it as if it was made for it Now go wash your vape
Stationed Out in 29 Palms in 1986. Two of my friends bought one each from a Mall in Palm springs! We found out while adding extra lights that they were Positive Ground? We figured it out quickly. They were out Four Wheeling with a big group thru Jushau Tree Monument when one fell over sideways! The group basically just picked it up and set it back on its wheels. Back then freeway driving wasn't that bad do to the 55 MPH Limit!
I drove a new stick shift base model Jimny all around Costa Rica for two weeks and it withstood a lot of crazy potholes, countless unseen unpainted speed bumps at 30+ MPH, and many a rocky dirt road. If we could own one of the new ones here in the US I would daily it.
4th Gen jimny owner (manual) best decision I ever did was to buy this car! SO MUCH FUN, can go anywhere, absolutely anywhere. This little off roader can put to shame bigger off roader with ease. I am sorry you don't have those in the US, it's just a fantastic car
My buddy had a new Suzuki Samurai in the late 80's early 90's. It had a couple of MTX Blue Thunder 10 inch subwoofers in the back. Rattled a lot of windows at High School bumping 2 live crew. Ah......the good old days.
The content keeps getting better and better. Now you have to get a modded K truck, but I don’t even you and your tightest shorts can pull off a Honda Beat.
The Suzuki Samurai is a wonderful vehicle. Ive had 5 of the Indian made ones in the last 27 years - the Gypsy. Cant get enough of them. I swapped my latest Gypsy out for the Jimny earlier this year. The Jimny is the Samurai’s modern successor. There is Nothing that comes close in terms of lightness, no nonsense go anywhere capability and simple functionality. These are very affordable cars and they put these big SUVs to shame.
Here in South Africa, we got them all, all the way from the LJ to the current Gen 4 Jimny, including the new 5 door version. We however never got the smaller engine Kei car version. I enjoyed the video and agree with everything except which one is the best. The wide track SJ413 Samurai (the actual Samurai model) from 88.5 to 1997, in my opinion, were and are the best.
Saw one of these here in Arkansas with a sick 90s paint job on it and it said turbo on the side in a neon pink letters big as hell. So sick lol great video

I mildy agree to this as a JL owner, I love my JL and also JK’s, but a TJ is going to be my secondary Jeep, hard to beat the 4.0 and auto/manual at the end of the day
I got t boned by a new mazda 3 in my tj. The cops and i had to stare at the side of my rubi for a long time to even see where the lady slammed me
@@johnstamps4829 That 4.0L was a great engine, super reliable. probably more reliable than the Suzuki engines on the jimney. Stilantis has made a new I6 engine that could be good. it has me thinking about an engine swap in the future.
@@Sube-Tube RIP mazda
I don't have ducks all over my dash, but I'm not gonna be an asshole and toss it if someone ducks my jeep, I just give it to someone who likes em. I would love to grab a samurai that is in great shape, your Jimny is beautiful.
my 1998 kia 4x4 sportage was like that but a bit bigger , steel frame, 2 speed high/low transfer .. auto trans , 2.0 oil cooler , manual frt hubs [ just get out and turn them to lock in ] gas tank skid plate ..folding rear seat ..great ride
The ducks all over the dash is same as when you see a Florida license plate, a hundred bumper stickers, or beanie babies all across the rear deck. It’s like a flashing neon sign that says “I drive like a total moron, I’m not paying attention and have no idea what I’m doing”.
You hold your tongue, we drive great down here. The people that don't aren't friggin from here, ya'll banished them to our state so we'd have to deal with em and I demand an apology
I'm the owner of the worlds largest collection of Beanie Babies and I'll be damned if I'm going to let you slander my innocent little Beanie Babies.
@@victorkreig6089 No no no. The snow birds all know how to drive because THEY LIVED WHERE THERE WAS ICE. If you can't drive on ice you don't live long enough to become a snowbird. It's the native Floridians who truly suck. You guys have never driven on shitty roads filled with potholes and snow and it really shows bruh.
I have owned, CJ, XJ, TJ, and more. I used to hate the Samurai but modern jeep culture and this body makes me want one now.
Saw so many on my recent trips to Japan made me realize this was the perfect car for my situation and came to realize they're difficult to get in the states. Your JDM videos have been great.
I've seen farmers take the back off of a samurai and put large tank sprayer in them for spraying fields.
Loving the jdm era you've fell into.
Get a 2004 subaru forester STI next!!!!
I’m a bronco guy and I was in a mountain town by Mount Fuji in August. I swear every fifth car looked just like a micro bronco and I absolutely loved it.
All hail the king of compact! The Jimny!
My buddy’s dad had one of these in the late 90’s, early 2000’s. He was convinced it would roll over too Lol 😂🤦♂️ I remember him messing with us going around curves, screaming “O god here we go!!”, as he jerked the steering wheel left to right haha 😂 fun times!!
THANK YOU for calling out the fake hood scoop! I have a 4Runner SR5 and while I wanted an Off Road for rear locker, I take comfort in the fact mine doesn't have the stupid cosmetic hood scoop whose only function is to obscure your view and create more road noise.
I miss my 88 zuki more than my 98 TJ......a lot more
My jimny owning, florida residing, younger brother can finally justify his purchase thanks to you james. His is a 90, brought it over from japan thanks to the airforce. Also ironically he owned a wrangler.
Love the channel! Much better than Colion reviewing H&Ks and supercars.
This car is a way more affordable and street legal alternative to side x sides which have now ballooned to greater than $30k for fully loaded examples
It's ridiculous. Side x sides are way over priced.
What do you think of the Suzuki Ignis/Subaru g3x Justy? I've been looking for one from 2004-2008. Is it worth the search?
I want a Jimny so badly! Both the 2nd gen and the 4 gen, but for now I'm in love with my 91 Suzuki Sidekick.
Fellow Jeep owner here owned 3 wranglers in the past, but I have always liked the smaller unique Jimnys.
My first car was a 1996 Geo Tracker, and I am finally proud of that
I had a 2016 3rd. Gen. Not a Kei but a 1.3L. Incredible car for city driving. The visibility was incredible. Offroading was tons of fun. the only thing that failed during my 5 years ownership was a suspension bushing that I repaired for 10 bucks.
I love the randomness of these car vids James… the Kei truck, now this? I approve- the older foreign cars had some cool stuff.
I'm actually jealous. I love the look of that Jimny. Congrats on an amazing new ride!
I had a 85 Montero 2 door and my friend had a samurai in the late 90s. A mutual friend had a k5 blazer lifted on 40s and he couldnt go anywhere we couldnt. Drove him crazy
I love my 2002 SJ410 Katana. It's cheap, versatile, and fun to drive. Though it still has the traditional leaf springs, it still kicks ass in off-road situations. It is also my daily-driven car. Cheers from Indonesia!
Count me as someone who has owned 3 Jeeps, and currently drives a Wrangler Sahara, that has ALWAYS wished he could have bought a new Jimny instead. I've driven several as rentals when on vacation, and the Jimny is always a blast to drive (even the 3rd gen!).
My 2020 Wrangler (4-cylinder turbo) has 4 doors, looks awesome, has scary fast acceleration, and got 31mpg on our vacation trip. Made in USA.
I rented one of these for a week in Costa Rica, 2002 ish. It handled four people and all our shit and it was the best part about the trip
I had a 98 Chevy Tracker, it was groovy....
Rented a new Jimny in iceland recently and it kills me i cant have one here. I absolutely loved that thing it was a blast to drive.
i worked at a Suzuki car dealership in 1989-91. it was also a Mopar jeep dealership after driving both i agree. and it was never unstable.
When I see her I'll know
Loving the vids JR !
Even worse: the dumbdumbs trying to start "moo moo subaru"
It was to illustrate that if you needed to go over a curb or any other minor inconvenience that it would not only do so but do it as if it was made for it
Now go wash your vape
@@Dibbs10101 even worse: the people trying to make "moo moo Subaru" a thing.
Love the Warren Buffett line there.
You car review deserves a channel on it's own.
I would buy a new jimny immediately if they were sold in the US. My aunt took us kids for a ride in her Samurai in the early '90's. Core memory.
Hell yeah! I had a Jimny when I lived in Japan. So much fun to drive.
About time!! This is amazing you need to get the gen 4
I love these Japanese car reviews. As a fan of guns and small cars I’m absolutely loving this content.
I drove a new stick shift base model Jimny all around Costa Rica for two weeks and it withstood a lot of crazy potholes, countless unseen unpainted speed bumps at 30+ MPH, and many a rocky dirt road. If we could own one of the new ones here in the US I would daily it.
The main thing that also makes the jeep so darn popular is the aftermarket support! Can't do that with these near as well.
Never had any Jeeps, but I have had a whole bunch of Samurais and Jimnys and they all worked fine :)
James! This is LEGENDARY!👌
Touch of grey is getting real
Mail room stress.
Love my 2022 Jimny - drove it from Dakar 🇸🇳 to Lugano 🇨🇭 across the Western Sahara; it didn’t put a foot wrong 💪🏼👍🏼
Saw one of these here in Arkansas with a sick 90s paint job on it and it said turbo on the side in a neon pink letters big as hell. So sick lol great video
Perfectly said 👍I have the same one (Samurai 1999 left wheel) and love it very much..
