As an American who has spent lots of time in Ireland, I completely agree with Des and Nautilus1972 below. In Ireland, both north and south, if you're not passed out under a bridge in a moth-eaten coat with an empty can of Special Brew for a pillow, you're not an alcoholic. The elevator down has many levels. You can get off or die, dragging folks down with you on the way. It's a bit of black humor but certainly true, "If it weren't for alcohol, the Irish would rule the world."

Really nice to hear this. I'm a year off the sauce today. finding it tough the last month since I quit weed too and am feeling a bit like an exposed nerve. I also only started comedy in the last year since I quit drinking, adjusting to full sobriety now but happy for it

The problem with growing up in Ireland is that you think your drinking is normal, when in fact you're just surrounded by alcoholics. Des is lucky he stopped when he was 19. I stopped when I was 36. So many lost years. Alcohol is not our friend.
