I am from Haiti, and my Mom would make it every Sunday. If you wait till the New Year, you are depriving yourself of this DELICIOUS soup. Another good soup is the Bread Soup
I made it for the first time yesterday. Whew chile this was work! All the peeling and chopping took hours. Your mom was making this every Sunday?!! Bless her feet. Bless her back. Bless her!! Because that is a labor of love.

Hello dear friends please help me share this recipe let it go far and hit the millions views. This is Haïtian Soup Joumou, our Independence Day January 1st 1804 Haïtians free from slavery as first Black Country. Haiti 🇭🇹 my beautiful country one day she will rise again . Happy New Year 2022 to all my RUclips family I appreciate you all and wishing you the best health , prosperity, happiness and lots of blessings from God. Hey my dear family I just find your video and I surely ill share with ma lady she likes soup joumour and she wants to learn how to cook it and I'm subscribed to this channel
I make my Soup Joumou with calabaza and butternut squash, goat, épis and golden potatoes. I serve mine over rice to cut down on se of the starches in it. It's still so good.
I need to learn to make this. I love to cook, I got a Haitian fiance we are hoping to move here this year.... time to step up and get my Haitian cooking game on, lol.
I made this yesterday. I was working hard for that big pot of soup. But ooohhh my goodness it is so delicious. I did use Maggi (I can't help it!). I also added leeks and cassava and replaced the dandelion greens with slick mustard greens. I love how customizable this is. Your instructions were easy to follow and I found all of the ingredients with ease. Thank you for taking the time to do this video!
@elizabethabunaw9383: please if you're Haitian and making this soup on January 1st to celebrate our freedom in honor of our ancestors don't add cassava, any other day that's fine. Leeks were in the original recipe.
@@ParadiseIsland-d6z Appreciate the response. I am not Haitian but have heard about Soup Joumou for years and wanted to try it myself. What is the reason for not adding cassava on January 1? I made this a year ago. Didn't have it in me to do it again this year.
@@elizabethabunaw9383 you're not Haitian, that's fine however most Haitians don't know the real meaning of the soup joumou. Some think it's just a tradition that they found their mothers and their grandmothers do, it's just the way we celebrate New Year. The slaves were not allowed to eat joumou as it was such a delicacy and it was reserved for the masters, carrot, celery potato, turnip, leeks and cabbage were so scarce and reserved for the masters, as those veggies didn't grow in the island originally they had to cultivate them, pasta was imported. The slaves used to steal and hide to eat those things, if they got caught, they would get a severe beating . The day of the Independence Day celebration, emperor J-J ordered for everybody to make a big pot of soup including all those things they were growing, harvesting and cooking but they were not allowed to eat without having fear of being caught not to get a beating. Cassava, corn were used to feed the slaves and the livestock.
Perfect timing to find you. I’m so cold right now but the thought of making this is already warming me up! I’ve been really into eating soups lately. I love the presentation of your video. I make cooking videos too! 🧑🍳 I love to be inspired and learn from other talented creators like you.
Great video; a little history, ingredients and measurements listed and similar to what i remember from home. Some of these other recipes I've watched are skeptical
Yoooo i just made this and it’s the best soup joumou I’ve ever had!!! My family is coming over to share it. They about to be so impressed. Imma be the new years soup guy now 😂
Hi, I’m new to your channel. Just wanted to thank you so much for this recipe. My husband is Haitian and I’m trying to learn different foods to make for him. Can’t wait to make this although I would have to make it with chicken because we don’t eat red meat. so happy about your channel. Stay blessed. 😋🙏🏽
My husband is Haitian so I try to learn as much of the culture. He did know of this bc he was raised in the US. He know of the soup but not history of it. I think you for sharing 🙏🏽 I will be making this for him soon.
@Dee'skitchenrendezvous : So far this is one of the best recipes for the soup joumou preparation on YT I've seen. The real reason behind the soup joumou is that to celebrate the freedom to eat what the slaves were not allowed to eat, joumou was such a delicacy and was reserved for the white masters. The slaves were growing it, harvest it and cooked it but we're not allowed to eat it. Carrot, celery, potato and little round white malanga and pasta were so scarce, so therefore reserved for the masters also. The slaves would get a beating if caught eating those things
Awww thank you so much for your kind comment 🤗🥰🥰🥰 of course we have to put our history out there because for some people Haiti still not been discovered or known. Thank you for watching my videos and thank you for your support. Happy New Year 2025 and happy Haitian Independence Day. Be bless and be safe
Well done. Finally a true soup joujou recipe. Thank you for not turning into a bouillon consonmem by adding yam plantain or dumpling in it. Happy new Year

You will find dandelion leaves in an Asian grocery store. Besides that lozeille you can just add cilantro and celery leaves if you can’t find Dandelion or Lorzeille . Hope this helps 😊 and thank you for watching. Happy holidays and a healthy New Year 2025
Making mine for the 2nd this year. Not as good as the 1st time I made it. I think I would cook the meat for less time because its taking a long time for my veggies to cook through and the meat eneded up dry and overcooked. It could alao be the type of pot I'm using. The biggest pot I have is a Dutch oven pot.
Greetings dear, Thanks for watching dear, yes try to cook for less time, or you can even cook the meat separately then in a separate cooking pot you fry some garlic along with some chopped onion, then add your veggies along with the squash liquid not sure what type of veggies do you add to your soup, I mainly add, potato, turnip root, carrots, and they shouldn’t take that long to cook. Perhaps 10 minutes. Then half way through you can add your meat, celery, cabbage, cilantro, macaroni and just a bit of spaghetti or to your liking. Please let me know if that helps 🤗. Happy New Year 2025 and happy Haitian Independence Day. God bless you 😍
