SsangYong Tivoli 2020 - More Exclusive Than Porsche 718 (ENG) - Test Drive and Review

- SsangYong Tivoli is a rare car. In 2018 less Tivolis were sold in Europe, than Porsche 718 Boxster and Cayman. SsangYong is a Korean brand owned by the Indian conglomerate Mahindra&Mahindra. SsangYong sells mostly in Korea, but it does export cars around the world, and the Tivoli B-crossover should be an interesting proposition. The car which had its debut at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show has undergone a facelift. Is the refreshed 2020 SsangYong Tivoli any good?
Starting price: 16 000 euro

Bought the Tivoli in 2017 coz I was broke. Have loved it ever since and increasingly so. Solid, reliable, spacious for the segment and you can even do light off road with it. Even today I think there is no better car for the money.
how many mileage now on the Odometer? any issues or parts replaced? i'm thinking of buying my wife.
Is it a review or a compilainig ??
it's complaining of a boy in a bad mood, this car is better than many of the segment
One of the worst review of any car. Stop talking about android auto and other gimmicks instead of the engine, transmission, suspension or safety specs. Using AC for defogging is a well known solution in all countries with real winters.
your coment saved me precious time
Couldnt agree more. He is very negative
I have owned a tivoli xlv (Estate) ultimate from new for over 12 months now to which I paid less than 19k. I agree with the window screen issue, the air con being the quickest way to clear the screen. Other than that I disagree with most other complaints. My hill start assist is fantastic. My censors here in the UK has never missed a beat. I have Tom Tom sat nav, DAB, heated seats X4 and also cooled seats in the front. Heated leather S-wheel, LKA. The list goes on. Negatives - The paint is easily scratched and by far the thinnest I've ever come across and the petrol fuel economy isn't class leading. I do respect Mareks opinion as he is not new to car reviews, however I am more than content/happy with my choice, as the equivalent German alternative, Q2/Q3(which I agree would be of better quality&looks), is easily an extra 6-10K sterling more spec for spec with half the warranty! If I wasn't saving for property then maybe I would have spent extra on a tuscon or a sante fe.
It's a solid car for the price especially if you go for nearly new, but test drive for your own opinion.
If you are saving for property then a Dacia Duster would have been a better option.
@@grahamjohnson4702 I am nearly 6ft5 and I found that there was less drivers room in the 2018 Dacia duster when I went to the showroom. I have also owned a Renault laguna coupe for 3 years which I liked very much however the design/build quality of some interior components were questionable and very costly to fix.
Graham I can appreciate the saving the duster offers compared to the XLV so I do understand your reasoning when it comes to saving for property. Thanks.
@@AM-zq8ro Thanks for your reasoned reply, yes there is a difference between 5 ft 4 ins and 6 ft 5 ins. A small point there is a difference between censors and sensors, not getting at you for that.
@@ghmusic8116 It was not plagued with rust problems, a few had rust problems when the RHD were first made in India for UK market but since they moved these cars to Rumania along with all other Dusters, no rust problems at all. The UK rust problem was corrected by Dacia but Dacia UK did not react quickly enough for veteran complainers because they were new to the game in the UK and not as ready as maybe they should have been for a large complaint, most cars affected seemed to be the white versions. My friend has had 4 dusters not because they were bad but because of upgrading to different models and getting good resale price, something you don't get with SsangYong.
@@ghmusic8116 Video is of a car at age 3 years and judging by the way he looks after his car some of these things look like driver inflicted problems and even then do not make the car unsafe and due to fall apart. A lot of his problems seemed to be his own that he will not admit to. My friend who is on his fourth, due as I said to upgrading, used to own a garage that dealt in Vauxhall and Jaguars and he swears he has never had a value for money car like the Duster. You obviously drove a base model because all Dusters have a radio above base model and a spare wheel as extra is a standard offering amongst a lot of manufacturers. Your price comparison is unrealistic but a fully spect Duster is 19,150 and is 4 X 4 whereas a Ford Ecosport a smaller SUV style car is only 4 X 2 and is only £500 cheaper in base trim with no extras, and a base Kuga starts at £23,000. Please come back if you have something sensible to say.
When I see someone driving a ssangyong I know they know about cars. Ssangyong drivers don't care about badges. Ssangyong drivers are trustworthy.
Ever heard of adjusting rear and side mirrors to eliminate blind spots or is that not what Europeans do? #notarealproblem
Ever heard of cars, where adjusting mirrors doesn't help?
There was a prelifted version standup well balanced and honest, I daresay. What I can actually share with you is the misconcern, or worse, an ordered blind eye on this South Korean brand. It is better than most of it's counterparts on the European market. It is reliable and pretty much eye catching B-SUV. I have driven it to Gotthard Pass to Northern Europe and back for 5500k. It works great. Probably, the slight responsive market is due to an agressive and yet false media management on other models of the kind. Just try it first and then speak truly of it. South Koreans should be trusted more than most of the European cars of this level.
Hi to all the car guys and girls I have a ssangyong rodius turismo and it has had a accident with the passenger side front end and I can't seem to find the rodius parts it's a 2015 model and whenever I search for parts it just comes with ssangyong korando turismo are they the same?? Please help me I need a new dashboard and front belts and bonnet and left wing and left headlight and a grill I really need assistance please thanks and its a abs grey colour
for the money seems like a good buy and it certainly looks great , my wife is seriously considering one of these , I hope she gets one
It is a good car! I consedered one, but i think inam going for it bigger brother :)
I almost went for a Tivoli back in 2016 but I went for the Duster. Comparing the two (cheap new cars), the Tivoli was better made and looked better inside but just didnt go as well as the Duster. The Duster looked like something from the 90’s but had lots more room. I drove the 1.6l manual petrol Tivoli and it had no acceleration on the motorway. One good thing I like was the SsanYong dealership. No pressure at all and they let me have the Tivoli for the whole afternoon
I'm surprised they didn't let you keep it :-)
It’s not that bad of a car. Oddly enough, the back end of the car felt like the damping of the suspension was all wrong. If I changed lanes on the motorway, the moment the Tivoli went over a painted strip. It felt like the back wheels were wobbling around. Trying to catch up with the rest of the car. Not sure if i can explain it clear enough. The Duster felt like a good car from the 90’s. no problems because it was a Renault parts bin, where everything had been tested before on other Renaults.
Hahahaha !
@BillyNoMates1974 in my experice the damping was OK, but the ride in general was wobbly. So the car wouldn't make noise or shutter on bumps, but the whole body would wobble.
This is why sometimes car without options is better than tech on paper - for example in Golf 4 clutch works so good that I don't even need automatic, while in other it's pain to operate. It's pure engineering.
Even in my small town there is one or maybe a couple of pre-facelifted Tivolis. Looks like recent Tivoli disappeared from lithuanian dealers webpages. More Ssang yongs came from second hand market (maybe due to low price and decent offroad/towing performance) By the way in Lithuania Ssang yongs (looks like only Rexton and Korando left) have longer warranty: 5 years or 150000 km.
I think you've should have tested the new Korando, it's seems to be a huge improvement over the Tivoli.
This was announced earlier, and I honestly thought it was NEW, when I booked the test drive. My mistake.
Just a note on not connecting to Android auto... I noticed that your phone was in flight mode. Have you tried switching off flight mode, hm???
It was in flight mode because we were recording voice segments as well. I drove this car for a week prior to writing the script and recording. It's not something I discovered at the last moment :)
FIXED. I had the same problem with the Android Auto or Apple Carplay on my Tivoli 2021 also. You need to use the original usb cable from your phone, and everything will work as normal.
I use the same cable in every car, and this is one of the very few I had problems with.
@@MarekDrives Shocker! But I am enjoying the car myself.
Will you be doing a review on the Korando too? Ssangyong still has yet to pull out of the Finnish market, they just presented the new Korando here. They do manage to sell some here and that's enough for them, because then again Subaru still hasn't left the market and they barely sell any cars either because there's even less reason to buy a Subaru than a Ssangyong.
I don't know if I want to.
I have been recently considering this car, for it seems to have a lot going for it for a low price tag even in full top spec considering other cars (in my country, top spec is around 24000 euro and benefits from a lot of offers that bring it at about 20000 euro in full spec and 10 year warranty!!) , it also comes with 4x4 and a lot other options as well that others don't get even close to (like ventilated seats for example). Now I don't know much in great detail but, there is an option to have an AISIN automatic transmission as well as far as I know, on this car... which from what I have seen are the same used in toyota, lexus and so on... the reliable brands? Is this car really that bad in your opinion??
It's as good as the authorized service provider.
@@MarekDrives That can be true. By the way! It DOES have electronic lumbar support as an option, as well as a digital cockpit display (that looks rather nice) which I've heard nothing mentioned of among other things. To be honest I think you've been a bit unfair on some aspects with this review. Not to mention the one related to this season, in which for most cars you've reviewed you never actually got to test them out in these conditions.
@@adriandraganescu6040 I mentioned the virtual instrument cluster here ruclips.net/video/HZ2W-4SC30E/видео.html
In Poland only the top spec gets lumbar support adjustment, and this is second from the top for 26k euro (with options), so I think it deserves properly adjustable seats.
@@MarekDrives You did mention the virtual cluster.. somehow it bypassed me, that was my bad, sorry!
Adrian Draganescu Avoid! I've just sold one I've owned from new (2016) 1.6L Diesel Tivoli Air Con failure 1st week of ownership all 4 Glow plugs had to be replaced in its first 3 Yrs Then the engine warning light remained on Diagnostic test showed possible Turbo failure..& only 35k miles (56K kms) on the clock? Not to mention cracked leather seats upholstery worn paint Forget it!
I saw this and it's bigger brother, the Korando, at an auto show recently and it did not impress me much. The Korando, though, seemed a better proposal in terms of what you get for your money - perhaps you can review that one too and let us know how it drives.
You should watch Asian Petrolhead's review of the korando
Thanks a lot for this kind review.
Here in Turkey .. there is no 2020 tivoli .. just 2020 korando and people liked it .. just front wheel drive there is no awd version .
For me I would prefer awd versions for a crossovers or for a SUVs.
I remember the early Fiat start/stop, had a life of it's own.
Same with Ford. There is a 2016 1.5 Ecoboost C-Max in the family and sometimes you push the clutch in and it beeps at you saying manual restart required. Then you have to press the engine start-stop button TWICE. Very fun when everyone is angry at you for not moving.
Yeah the stop/start on my Fiat Panda doesn't shut engine off and only works when I have stalled it...
Marek, would you rather buy a Dacia Duster?
100% duster is just Renault in difrent body, definitely better then that
No reasonable Man would pack his family into 3 star Dacia Duster. My pal considered dacia until sb told him about ssangyong. His prasing God since then. Notice, all families in Dusters bear parachute-boot overhead. Besides, Dacia Duster is in top ten unreliable cars.
Dacia looks nicer, I agree, but you drive sitting inside.
I'm afraid I'm not that rich so that I could afford car this cheap :-)
Would you reviev fiat 500???
He did
That warranty though . .
You'll never have to pay for a repair again.
I get the impression you didn't like this car much. hehe ;p
Same. Mark did big effort to list all the things he doesn't like or has problems with. this review sucks.
The Indian company who owns Ssangyong are not investing any more money. They are selling and maybe a Chinese buyer would step in. The design isn't bad, but needs more investment and refinement.
"...The more interesting the competition is..." LOL
Here in Ukraine seems that Tivoli have fiasco.....While Sang Yang Korando was more-less successful 2008-2014, esp diesel models, Tivoli were only in petrol specs and I saw no one on the road....
P.S. Marek, Sang Yang never ever will give You test car, and You will never be able to get visa into South Korea or India..... LOL..
They call it an SUV because of the tyres and wheels.
We get this in Egypt, too, both this and the extended version (I think same wheelbase, longer boot). I hadn't noticed that there'd been a facelift, I usually turn my head away whenever I see one (especially the extended version) :)
The test drive car seems to have some problems. When its humid outside and you get in, your body heat and breathing generates water vapours that condense on the inside of the windahield. That goes double if your clothes are damp. So this is a general thing available for all the cars. My skoda does the same and so does my Touareg. I start the AC and this goes away. So play nice. Ssangyong is a lot of car for thr money you pay. Its new but will see in a few years if it a good value car. Cherrs.
I understand the point you are making. Perhaps I didn't make mine clear enough.
When I set out to film it's usually still dark outside, often quite chilly. I started the car, and I put pressed the demister button. In most cars with automatic climate control that turns the fan on full, blows air on the windscreen, and turns on the AC. I don't know how it works in the SsangYong, but it clearly didn't do its job properly, and I had to turn everything on manually.
@@MarekDrives no worries. Just dont take it so hard on the car! Love your videos. Keep it up. Best wishes from Romania.
The car is simply like Mahindra xuv 300!!
Xuv 300 is based on Tivoli
A rare sight on UK roads as well.Probably purchased by those looking for something different. In top trim expensive and lots of competition. Its good to be different, but probably SsangYong to different perhaps, and of course the brand could consider a better trading name!
More than mildly amusing!
I prefer dacia duster
SsangYong filed for bankruptcy in December 2020 so far no one is interested in saving it...Mahindra wants rid of there 75% share holding but can't find anyone to sell to.
I wonder why.

A story has been circulating that HAAH (An American (backed by Chery Auto) Importer of Chinese SUV's) has been interested in buying SsangYong & assembling them in the USA under the Vantas brand name?Currently SsangYong owe $millons in debt and even if HAAH did succeed in buying them They are only an Importer Not a Vehicle manufacturer and simply haven't the money to put into future SsangYong models In reality as its stands Its curtains.
GH Music .... yes I did read that but believe they haven't come to an agreement and it wasn't looking good for the deal.
@@tonys8243 Yes your spot on I've only just sold Tivoli (XLV) new from 2016 Tivoli XLV tbh have had absolutely nothing but problems from day one mainly electrical & glow plug failure at low mileage & its warranty was coming to an end.I wonder why no one wants to buy them?
These vehicles are affordable unlike the Hyundai, Kia or Renault.
Any fault you'd ever have is covered by Ssangyongs 7 Year or 5 Year warranty.
This car is still miles ahead of Dacia.
How is it affordable if it costs the same as the competition?
@@MarekDrives I agree its expensive in some countries in Spain, Greece & Italy the Tivoli undercuts rivals by 4 to 5 thousands. But it depends on taxes. The spec on the Tivoli is good. Some people don't really like these cars that maybe anything they did they wouldn't like. Ssangyong have improved a lot but people still focus on the Rodius 2004. Like Renault never had a ugly car???
As I said in my conclusion: get the lowest trim, and you'll be happy.
@@joelasuedois8980 Yeah like the Tivoli does have more of a class then a Dacia.
@@MarekDrives I've owned 4 of these 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018. And I've just ordered a facelift model. Because if you own this car for longer then a few weeks you begin to love it & yes the brand isn't everyone's cuppa tea but point out the positives there's more positives then negatives with this car.
If you want one of these talk to the owners, drive one for 24hrs. Because I bet you most owners will give positive feedback.
I owned cars from Volkswagen, and I can say to you these are better and there customer service has been 100% better then previous cars from big brands.
As far as BUDGET SUVs go this by far the best.
If you considering one TALK TO THE OWNERS!
Well thank's Marek, now SsangYong lost their last client (for those who didn't get it, it's sarcasm). Nice review as always and a bit special, because of the car for sure.

I no longer consider this car, I have ordered one after test driving it at a local dealer. I suggest anyone who looks at this review to try and test/see one themselves before giving in to paid/biased reviews or a stupid brand badge.
