Over the years I have met many Vet's from all over the globe. Aussies, Kiwi's, British, Irish, Indian, Serbian, Bosnian, Vietnamese, American and much more.
As an Aged Care nurse I got to spend time with many. And many opened up to me in their last years and swore for me to never tell their families.
Some of those stories were both hilarious and also beyond terrifying and mortifying.
I walked into the kitchen of a English gentalman and found him standing at his kitchen center island, he twirled around at me with an angry look and suddenly froze as he looked around himself. He told me he thought he was standing and addressing the troops and thought I was a late straggler into the meeting and apoligised.
As an Aussie I accidentally introduced a Serbian and Bosnian customer at my work to each other.
I overheard their conversation out front and between them they realised they actually fought in the same city, in the same area, in the same town and even in the same street on the same day. One day decades ago they were actively shooting at each other across the street.
Like many immigrants to Australia they took on the new attitude and outlook on life as us. Their next words were, "Let's go to the Pub for a beer!"
They later thanked me for introducing them to each other.
Their view of the past was just that, in the past and should stay there. The here and now of today is a new day and something to cherrish and enjoy.
They became the best of friends, apparently they hilariously were like a pair of young school boys looking to get into mischief, and were inseparable as both families merged and spent time together before they finally passed away from old age.
Just the stories alone can almost give you PTSD. I feel honoured that many chose to open up to me, but dear lord some of those stories were dark and unsettling, kind of wish i didn't know sometimes.

And you merely heard about them. Imagine actually living them. It's a wonder every combat vet doesn't go insane. The human mind has an awesome capability to cope with horror.
Thank you for caring for those old vets. The fact that they opened up and shared with you speaks volumes about you.

Thanks for presenting this and the other versions of 19. I'm an Australian ex serviceman. I didn't go to war. This song grabs my heart and I cry every time I hear it. Bless all who serve and all who have served.

Powerful commentary. I received my draft notice the same week I turned 19 in 1969. I got a ROTC deferment because I wanted a bit more knowledge before going to war. They came out with the lottery in my second year of college and became ineligible because my number was around 5 above the last one called.
My two instances ptsd were a motor cycle crash at 14 and a deadly helicopter crash age 20 while fire fighting here in Alaska. I think about the helicopter accident a couple of times every month while going to bed. I remember my crew and feel by remembering them I am honoring them as well. Our time will come and I hope the ones I leave behind remember me with love and humor.

Your respect is overwhelming to me and I don't know why. Perhaps it's because we rarely see it these days. This song made me tear up and so did your respect. I'm 66 so I was only a little girl but I remember the war. I also remember seeing the veterans from WWII missing a leg and walking around with crutches while they folded up one leg of their pants.

Everytime i hear this song, no matter what version, i tear up. I’m not Australian but my grandfather served in the same war. He was drafted and served One Tour, during which he saw his best friend be killed and he, himself, was wounded with shrapnel which was never fully removed. He never spoke about it until i was 8, when he gave a brief talk about his service during a veterans event at my school. Afterwards, he didnt talk about it again. I didnt even remember he served until i read his obituary (he died on halloween 2018 after a 20 Month Battle with cancer). Based on what i’ve been told by family, this song is eerily similar (almost identical) to Both My grandfathers story and many others i’ve seen. RIP Pop Pop (Grandpa).

I have PTSD after being abducted by a 31 year old predator, at the age of 16 when I was out walking my dog after school one day. RUclips won’t allow me to tell the details, but it was bad, terrible, enough to suffer a living hell of being stuck in that day, on repeat for all of my life so far.
    It’s an unfair illness.

ANZAC day is getting closer . Thats the day Australia celebrates its servicemen past and present particularly our first baptism of fire at Gallipoli. A failure of a battle in Turkey in WW1. There are many good videos about the ANZAC's and their exploits around the world . Australia has always been a staunched allied friend of America .
