*HOMELY HEADPHONE WARNINGS*
Should we be surprised at this point that Natsume leaves us feeling both warmed and humbled? Natsume encounters a yokai from his past, but Natsume is not the same as he was back then and he DOES in fact have people and a home he wants to return to! What a penultimate episode!

personally I feel like Natsume's hyper-kindess is a form of trauma response. You may have heard of flight, fight, freeze, and fawn. Fawning is when a person responds to danger by quote "attempting to appease whoever is causing the danger in order to prevent them from causing harm...unable to stop the people-pleasing behavior...and may neglect their own needs." We hear this when he blames himself for the caregivers violent actions and neglect towards him. I think it applies to when he helps the yokai too, since Nyanko-Sensei is always pointing out that sometimes he helps them despite putting himself in danger and that clearly upsets Nyanko-Sensei. Natsume is such a kind person, I hope he sees that he doesn't always have to rely on just himself and learns to set more boundaries.
I totally agree with this take on Natsume's trauma. Natsume has always considered himself a burden and therefore compensates by giving 110% of himself to people's requests which is exactly why the moments with Nishimura Kitamoto and Tanuma have all been important this season encouraging Natsume to let others help him and to acknowledge when something is too much for him to handle. Natsume has always thought of his caregivers abuse and negligence as his fault and therefore he needs to do something to make it up to them. He also feels that if he doesnt perform or act a certain way then he will be abandoned again. While Natsume has grown alot that kind of anxiety and fear is not easy to get rid of and I cant wait for future episodes to look into more character building for Natsume.
@@Sara-ce5wr omg yes! I'm so glad you brought up his friends, that's such a great point. The cultural festival episode Nishimura and Kitamoto know Natsume so well that they went to his house and asked him if he didn't want to work the rummage sale to speak up and they would help him. I'm so glad he's surrounded by friends who are there for him!
I definitely agree it's a trauma response! I'm definitely going to be talking about it in the next few episodes as well, but I'm glad that Natsume has been growing with this season (and seasons) and is such a wonderful and kind person that is also relatable! Thank you for the comment!
Can't watch the hospital scene without shedding tears.
If it was made by Touko-san, I would gladly eat it even if it was a lunch with only parsley.
(By the way, it would have been like a shounen manga if Natsume had gone on that trip with that one-eye youkai. I'd like to see a bit of that future too. lol)
The hospital scene is so beautiful! But yes, anything Touko made, I would gobble up! Thank you for the comment!
This episode released the onion cutting ninjas and while I stayed strong for most part it was an emotional episode. This flashback was everything i could have asked for and more.
The moment the episode started off too chill we all knew something was about to shake Natsume's world. I must say that ever since the festival episode even though I liked Nishimura and Kitamoto from the beginning I like them even more and I like how they try to relate and connect to Natsume.
At first naturally we would have all thought that the youkai was looking for Reiko but Natsume has a realization moment before he collapses and that tips us off that this yokai does know Natsume from the past.
This episode is the first solid confirmation we get that Natsume has been abused and neglected physically and emotionally by his former caregivers and it hurts. It hurts even more considering that Natsume thinks he is to blame. Im sure Natsume felt suffocated and ran off to clear his head but thankfully it allowed him to meet the best mom of anime history, Touko. I couldnt be happier.
Ive heard two people talk about this and it blows my mind but Natsume really was at his limit at this point in his life and if Touko hadnt come along then Natsume would have or may have actually cut ties with his family and ended any hope for a happy life or a life at all by going with that youkai. He actually says how can I say goodbye to them without causing trouble and if Touko and Shigeru hadnt visited proving to Natsume that these people care about him that much to be this persistent Natsume would have given up. Natsume's kindness that we see him show to youkai and people at the start of the show up till now is possible because Touko and Shigeru showed him compassion and prevented him from giving up on himself and also helped him to keep trusting in others.
Touko really visited Natsume and said all the right things allowed him to make the choice himself whether he wanted to go to them or not, said she wanted him there and even Shigeru telling him that he doesnt have to stay there was perfect. I totally agree that Natsume is slowly learning how layered human interactions are and so I think at some point especially with Touko and Shigeru deciding to take him in that he will understand that its not just that they were being generous but they had their own desires too which is okay.
What gets me is that Natsume has never had relatives that he completely could be comfortable around and so the fact that he breaks down in front of Touko and Shigeru shows that he felt comfortable to do so and him crying and begging just 😭
Another translation of Madara and the youkai's conversation is there isnt anything in him that would interest you now to which the youkai responds then I'll give him sadness once more. Madara letting that youkai know that Natsume isnt lonely anymore was so satisfying along with getting rid of her. No toxic stage five clingers near Natsume thank you. I didnt even notice that where Natsume hugged Madara was the scar from the injury. Natsume and Madara developing this loving and adorable bond will always be precious to me. I think technically this is the season finale and next week episode is more of a special episode like they did with season 1.
ONION CUTTING NINJAS - YES! I agree 100% - this episode was a roller coaster for sure! It was interesting to see a yokai specifically hunting Natsume and not his grandmother, I agree!
I hate the realization that Natsume has been abused physically as well as emotionally. 🙁It really hurts! And it adds a lot to not only how he’s built these walls to cope but also why he values the Fujiwara household SO MUCH and almost feels undeserving of it, sadly. I’m definitely going to talk about someone’s theory of Natsume in a future episode, but it’s really scary how things might have gone down if Touko and Shiguru hadn’t shown up! It’s sad to see someone as kind as Natsume be thinking of a path as dark as what he was. But also illustrates how important that kindness is - Touko is a literal saint, as well! Well, her and Shigeru both are! Watching Natsume break down with them was so heartbreaking but also so endearing for his character.
I loved Madara standing up for Natsume in that moment! It was satisfying indeed! YES, no toxic stage 5 clingers, hahaha! I loved this episode and thank you for the comment and kind words! See you next week!
I can guarantee you
Even seasons 4 5 etc can't stop you watching Natsume
Even me. Natsume has been the only 1 anime that makes me rewatch it again. 😅
I'm soooooooo excited for Season 4 and beyond! Thank you for the comment - this is such a comfort series!
26:28 accurate 😂😂😂
39:18 that’s too cute ngl
Ahhh, thank you for the comment and kind words!
Let’s just say I did not survive this episode with dry eyes. I never have before and I believe I never will in the future 😢the previous family’s mom actually said that Natsume went into the forest to “harass” them. She thought that he threw himself off the cliff in the forest so that they would be inconvenienced by the hospital bill and such. That’s why she mentioned the lengthy hospital stay and him wanting to “hurt” them. The actual word she used was “harass” not “hurt”. It was horrible. And the son was voiced by Sakurai Takahiro (Cloud Strife - FF7, Arataka Reigen - Mob Psycho, Tomioka Giyu - Demon Slayer, Geto Suguru - Jujutsu Kaisen, etc). I was so surprised to hear his voice in Natsume, and for such a small role too!
The son was genuinely nice. I kinda hope he comes back into the series at some point.
@ yeah I like him. He can’t help that his parents are jerks, or at least being jerks to Natsume
This episode was so beautiful and melancholy...but yet hopeful! Par for the course for Natsume, obviously! :P I love that Natsume has found a family that lvoes and supports him! Thank you for the comment and the voice actor information! I appreciate that!
I can't when Natsume cries 😭😭😭 I wonder how the manga made this episode, specially the youkai because at first I thought they honestly just wanted to help Natsume. So I want to know if their first appearance was creepier or what.
Wow, we are so close to season 4!! It flashed by somehow!! Looking foward to the finale, have a very nice day!!
Yesss, I will be going over the manga starting with Season 4's opening episode...s. ;)
I'm so excited! Thank you for the comment and kind words and have a great week as well!
