Just gotta add how refreshing it is to have an adult cast of characters in a turn based RPG again. Feels like it's been too long....
PS: Don't worry, I know I mispronounce Ichiban Kasugas name a few too many times.... Also "Kamurocho." Since my first Yakuza review years ago, until now, I still struggle to get that word out.
I can't remember the last I saw an adult cast a turn based rpg that wasn’t an indie or the characters weren’t 19 or early 20s. It is a breath of fresh air for sure
was about to mention it
So much this! I'm 39 so this felt much more relatable than the typical HS cast.
This game is one of the best RPGs ever.
Better late than never brother.
Always remember Quality>Quantity.
It’s always nice to start my morning with another great video from you! You’re one of the better reviewers out there, in my opinion! Glad you gave LAD a try!
Yakuza remains one of my 10 favorite franchises in gaming.... plus we have been JRPG fans and turn base fans since Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy 7.... so when they added more of the turn based jrpg system to this Yakuza we were all smiles. Thanks for putting a spotlight on this gem, as well as giving it your in depth 15 to 25 minute review highlighting the good and bad as YOU see it. Much appreciation.
TBH, they added so many RPG mechanics to the series over the past few years that it felt like it was already getting out of the Brawler genre a bit and more into "Action RPG" territory. In a way I guess going full on "classic JRPG" wasn't that far out of left field.
@@TarksGauntlet We never thought of it that way but yea, after you put it like that it is not the huge jump we first thought :)
Im so happy you made a video for this game, about to watch it but just wanted to comment and say thanks :) Seriously cant love this game enough, it was a pretty much blind buy from my side and it brought me to the rest of the Yakuza series about which I only head till now. Gotta say I was freaking floored by the quality and heart in this series and found myself weeping like mad more than once.
I just wish I could get a collectors edition or even just a box for the pc version :(
I'm sold, adding this to my wishlist xD
Thank you so much for reviewing this. I loved Yakuza 6 and was excited about this new one taking a more turned based rpg approach in combat. I have the game but haven't started yet due to being busy. But can't wait to play it.
You are going to love it. It's so good 🤩
Keep up the good work! Your reviews are always my favourites.
They tried something new and absolutely knocked it outta the park!
Very nice review. Really need to add this once I finish the other games
Hello, my dude. Excellent review, very professional. Just wanted to ask you not to forget or abandon the skits. They bring uniqueness and charm to the channel, as well as comic relief. Keep up the good work!
No plan on abandoning them or anything, but it feels kind of rare that I find good places to include them. If I get something good though I'll make sure to include it. As bad as my sense of humour is I'm glad somebody enjoys them haha.
While a serious and well written scene I laughed out loud when Ichiban kinda went all "if you're homeless just buy a house" with the Hello Work situation.
I mean, he's not wrong, just very naive haha. That's kind of his thing a lot of the time. He understands solutions but not always how to make them work. Such a great goofball.
Your review was the reason why I bought this game. Thanks. It's pretty fun.
I just recently discovered your channel. You do good work.
Great review. Looking to get into the yakuza series, maybe this is the perfect entry point for me since i'm not really into the brawler system from the previous series and i like turn based mechanics more
Do it! Zero didn't grab me for the same reason but I'm jiving with this system.
I think this is a better persona than persona has been lately
Just finished the game. Damnnn. Its a new era.
Great review as always! I picked up a PS4 copy but I will be holding off and waiting to play it on PS5 in March. I have struggled to get into the yakuza series purely based on the combat and I hope this will get me into the series with the new turn based system.
It will! I couldn't get far into 0 for the combat but this got me instantly.
I didn't think they had the balls to change it up so much :) glad they did! Looks like a lot of fun!
Thanks for the review sir.
METAL!
Damn so many yakuza Games Where to Start o.o
Very good Video, like allways
Definitely gonna try to grab this one, sounds pretty fun and hell that's the last game from Yakuza series I'm missing right now.
I love this game!! Nice review!
I really need to grab this game, especially since my local Walmart still has Steelbook copies in stock.
Also, it warms my heart to see so many turn-based RPGs getting the top-notch treatment these last few years
I absolutly love this game. It's my fav game in the franchise along with Yakuza 0. I feel it was such a fresh take on the franchise. I adore Ichiban. He's such a great character and unlike Kiryu who is really composed most of the time Ichiban is not afraid to be emotionel and show it. It makes for some great scenes in Yakuza Like A Dragon which could never have been possible with Kiryu as the protagonist. I'm really looking forward to see what Ryu Ga Gotoku studies have in store for us next!
Crazy how the timing worked out for this game. It came out shortly after both dragon quest and megaten had their most popular releases in the west, and after Sega had made all the games in the original series available on ps4. So excited to start it.
Seong-Hui is indeed hot. 💯
Hot-dayumn, here I was, perfectly content with not wanting to add the game to my wishlist, kinda happy with not liking the "new flashy guy" and perfectly okay with not having to worry about "Like a Dragon" because I had to complete the "old" Yakuza titles first anyway. Now you come along with your fancy review, subversively destroying my healthy pessimism and suddenly I'm drooling over this newest entry into the series. Shame on you!
Ngl I loved Ichiban as a protag immediately he kinda reminds me of a dog always trying his best ya know.
That sums him up very well. But like most good doggos he protects his master with ruthless dedication, and at times needs to be taught some restraint.
He's an absolutely solid MC. Loved him from start to end.
It’s honestly the best yakuza game and RPG I’ve ever played in my life. Most would argue yakuza 0 or whatever. But yakuza like a dragon is pure perfection to me. I feel so sorry for everyone who passed up this gem of a game, it’s worth every penny. Unlike most games nowadays.
Definitely not the best
This was my first Yakuza game...
And i loved it.
Have it as my number 12 JRPG
Leaving a comment for algorithm
it's on sale at the humble store right now. but so is red dead redemption2 on steam. both same price and inunu which one to drool over. life's tough sometimes!
Yes, there IS a ton of hot people and I'm not upset about it :)
Best game I’ve played in a long time, and I’m only in chapt 5. I know we had our disagreements in the past, but this is a 5/5 game.
I’m not even a story guy, because I prefer game play and combat, but I was hooked on what happens next and I couldn’t put it down because of the addicting RPG elements
count me interested (watched other reviews but was like meeh typical reviews talk)
Great game, but you are right about forced grindung. Found that out yesterday on a story section that wouldnt let me in unless I was wearing certain acessories. Hence a good few hours fighting punks to get the cash required.
Thanks for the amazing review. Lovely game that I’m currently enjoying very much. But for me, the game crashed at least 5-6 times in about 25 hours of playtime; I’m playing on base PS4, maybe this has something to do with it.
I played on base PS4 as well but never ran into anything like that.
Then again, I also recently played Jedi Fallen order and has cutscenes run like a slide show. Apparently performance in that game is typically better than that so I guess sometimes it's luck of the draw?
i really like this game.its rare to have a great turn based game nowadays
Persona 5
I've been hesitant on this game even though I'm a big Yakuza fan, but your review made my on it. The Day Ichi version is on amazon for $38 for some crazy reason so I literally bought it as soon as I finished your video 🤣
The instant-death effect can be handled in many ways, you're not forced to use the hero job. For example you can equip the sacrifce stone, and there are other equipments that nullifies the instant-death.
I guess solutions that would force a game over before you you learn, and may not actually have the gear to do. As far as I know there's 2 pieces of gear that would work. 1 nullifies it, the other resurrects you once then breaks. Still kind of rubs me the wrong way. Especially where you've no way of knowing it's coming and can't change gear to adapt mid-battle, which means they throw you into a battle where your chances of success are left 100% up to RNG.
Where that's even a possibility I think it raises issues with the design.
So how I see it there's 4 solutions:
1) Get rid of instant death altogether.
2) Make it so you don't get game over immediately upon ichiban dying.
3) Force or heavily and directly suggest the equipping of the item or use of the skill mid-battle. The "He's charging up," thing doesn't quite cut it, especially where instant death was something the game really didn't employ before.
4) QTE to endure the attack. Possibly causing you to be left with 1hp.
Personally I'd pick option 4. It doesn't undermine the gameplay and allows you to stand an actual chance of winning your first time through based on your skill rather than your luck or coincidentally chosen jobs or gear. The loss scenario there the first time through though, its just BS. Nothing guides the player into being prepared for it.
@@TarksGauntlet I haven't tested it myself, but I have read that a perfect guard also denies the insta-death. This would be similar to your QTE solution. Someone says that a normal guard will also work, but I have my doubt. I also read that is possible to interrupt his charge if you do enough damage to him. But yes, you are correct that there is still some RNG involved, and they at least should have given an option to change gears during fight. Let's hope that in the next games they will refine these game mechanics.
@@cardinalStiefel I have faith, especially with their first RPG attempt being this good, the next one is going to be absolutely immaculate.
This IS my first real experience going all in on a Yakuza game and I’ve really enjoyed it so far, mostly for the story! I love Ichi’s constant optimism and was really taken aback by how much the narrative sucked me in. I hit a couple of walls so far where I had to grind more than I thought I would but that’s probably as much my lack of RPG experience at play as anything :p
Out of curiosity, around what chapter did you start needing to grind? I believe it's chapter 12 where I first experienced the spikes in difficulty, but thankfully an arena unlocks just before that which repeating the last 10 floors or so of it turned out to be a great way to pop some levels off fast.
Yeah thats the 1st thing I did like on Ichiban hes constantly looking on the brighter side of all situations, hes no Kiryu Kazuma but he still shines as the new torch bearer of the Yakuza franchise in my opinion.
@@TarksGauntlet Way earlier, I think around when you’re doing the Soapland quests but it was because I blew my dough on food and needed to keep getting in random encounters to get gear to equip so yeah, player error I think 😂
@@yohachi0154 Right? I always appreciate when characters aren’t hyper cynical and once I finish this one I kinda wanna go back through the series to see what the other stories are like.
Well, if you're ever in quick need of cash and you haven't unlocked the business mini-game yet, make sure you pop off the substory for the pawn shop. You can always sell your old gear and crafting materials if you absolutely must.
Or just try to finish the story to take pics of all the Kappa statues or find all the cats. Those quests unlock early and pay out big. Hope you get on a good track with it dude. If the story already has you hooked it only gets better as it goes!
Better than Cyberprank
Hey now. A bit unfair to compare Yakuza LAD to a game that's still in beta isn't it?
/s lol.
So since this is the first yakuza game since the original to have an english dub which do you prefer the dub or the sub
From what I heard of the dub the actors do a mostly fine job, but I gotta stick with the OG here.
There's just little things that didn't feel characterized the same in english and it really threw me off when I heard it. Things that probably wouldn't be an issue at all had I only played in English.
The Voice actor for Ichiban for example, while great for the most part, seems to deliver lines through his teeth a bit, which makes him sound a bit more restrained than Ichiban really is during some of his scenes, and so far, NOBODY has managed to do a good Majima in english yet. I'm sure it's possible, but I wouldn't know where to begin. Easily one of the hardest characters to replicate.
But generally, most characters hold up well in both. I guess if we consider Judgement a "Yakuza Game" (I don't exactly but I mean, it is Kamurocho) that had an english dub as well I believe.
if they remade chrono trigger in this style graphically I would die happy
I really like this game, it’s fun and not too hard
So what's the job for Ichiban to avoid the instakill?
Hero class iirc.
@@TarksGauntlet appreciate it, thanks bro
It’s all fine with PS5, one of my best purchased games. Always a fan of turn based rpg’s
Quality entertainment doesn't have a time frame sir.
I’m truly loving Like A Dragon, Ichiban is just so damn relatable and cool
I will say on PS5 that load times are practically non-existent so definitely play on a PS4 pro or PS5 if you can
Finished the game earlier this month (PC & Dub). Outside of the 3mi Yen part, the game is solid! Excited for the next one. Also, why is Nanba always 2 blocks away when its his turn to attack?
Bruhhhhhh 😂😂😂
He's back there creating the next Strand type game. I know this isn't the real reason but it's the excuse my imagination made up so I'm running with it.
the game can ask for some time
Yeah Joon-Gi Han and Seong Hui are pretty hot. I would let Seong Hui sit on me then upload the pic to Instagram without my knowledge. Also, Adachi is the man. Dude is wilding out, all about porno, booze, partying, and justice.
I loved Yakuza Like a Dragon. Funny that Final Fantasy went more action based in later years and Persona is getting a Warriors spinoff while Yakuza went turn based. Funny how life turns out.
"There's a lot of really hot people in this game"
That's like, the whole Yakuza franchise dude. Everyone is hot.
I think this is the 6th one I played (Including Judgment) and yeah, most of them are good for this, but 7 takes the cake.
@@TarksGauntlet i haven't gotten to 7 yet (still playing judgment) but i'm still partial to my dojima dragon and his one-eyed friend in the "hot" department.....but Zhao, Joon-gi and Seong-hui are very, very hot.
“If the main character dies, it’s game over”
That is not good. In Dragon Quest 11, every single party member needs to die for that to happen, including those that are not even in battle at the time. I don’t get why there’s a big discrepancy with how JRPGs handle this stuff.
Is there save points before bosses during those lengthy dungeons?
I bought this week this game here in Brazil for $170.
good job friend!
did you play this on base ps4 or the pro version? i was going to pick it up on base ps4, i hope there are no technical/performance issue in it
Base model. The technical issues are minimal enough you shouldnt be concerned.
@@TarksGauntlet perfect, thank you so much for the answer.. you probably the only ytbers out there that's still use base ps4 for reviewing games and stuff.. trully appreciated! you got a sub!
Why did you played this with the Japanese dub?
As a series veteran who has played this is my 2nd facorite yakuza game behind 5 if they can get rid of the little annoyances we could have a masterpiece on our hands with yakuza 8
late review is fine as long as its a proper review, release day review is mostly fake, i know some got early access, but on RPG? early access means very little as the game normally is quite long.
Your pronunciation of ichiban sounds like Ichi-ben
I guess the question here is "Which pronunciation?" cause I must say his name 3 different ways in the video. I try to say it with a soft "A" but like... it just never comes out right.
@@TarksGauntlet it's around 3:14 it sounds like ichi-ben when I noticed but at end of the video it sounds right, though I only noticed only 2 instead of 3 but in end it's just something I noticed, don't worry too much about it.
I understand English vowels are different and not absolute like Japanese vowels so when you speak English pronouncing Japanese words it tends to follow the English vowels instead.
@@smug_slime Yeah, I try, but being raised in eastern Canada in a town with basically no foreign population I was always off to a bad start in this category haha. I noticed while editing I changed how I said his name a bunch, even left a note about it in the pinned comment I wrote before making the video public. Someday I'll make it through video pronouncing everything right, but it'll be years from now haha.
So the yakuza still use VHS thats why They are so scary
I was pleasantly surprised with Yakuza 7, I was expecting to not care for it much despite liking turn based combat, I'm partial to the brawler style of the franchise, but I couldn't put it down once I started it. Just wish they would have had the patch that shows weaknesses on enemies when I was playing, having to remember that stuff sucked, but once I got attacks that hit everyone I would just spam those any way.
this game came out at a perfect time and the story really hit hard for me , my GOTY just beating out cold steel 4
Every mainline Yakuza game being on Gamepass is absolutely amazing. Playing on my Series X is amazing and have 0 to no loading.
This game was a hell of a ride. This one and yakuza 0 are easily my favorite yakuza games
Robbed in Game Awards
Hearing about the load times I am glad I went and bought it on PC since they are not an issue with me. I hated the Judgment load times when playing that (like if I wanted to exit a minigame the load screen would take around the time it took for me to complete it).
Haven't completed the game yet myself (only on chapter 5) but already loving it. I do the karaoke in both voices and Ichiban's song with the English VA just always brings a smile to myself since him singing poorly but trying his best while looking like an idiot just suits Ichiban so much.
The game biggest sin is having Virtua Fighter 5 in the arcade during the prologue. It only should have been there after the time skip.
This game made me laugh, cried and something between. I love this game so much. I'll be accepting apology letter for anyone who doubted this was going to work because of new gameplay mechanic.
Don't worry technically everyone is late for Yakuza 7( unless you played in Japanese or watched someone playing), considering that the game realeased in the beginning of last year, and we just got a English translation now, so its understandable.
Wow. I can't believe it took you 4 turns to beat the final boss. I beat him on the first try even though this is the first turn-based rpg that I've ever played besides around 10 hours of Dragon Quest 11 and a couple hours of Final Fantasy 14. I was pissed because it took me around 25-30 minutes to beat him, but I didn't die. I made sure all of my party members were at least a level 60 before I started that final mission. My lowest member was at level 60, and my highest was at 65 before I started. As long as you have a dedicated healer the final boss was easy. He was just annoying as hell because of all the HP that he had.
Did you have Ichibans second wind ability or manage to avoid having Ichiban get hit by the 1-Hit KO?
if I had Ichibans second wind ability this would have easily been a first try fight, but I didn't, so it came down to RNG for me. Took 4 rounds to get good enough RNG for Ichiban to not be targetted by that attack.
Yakuza Like A Dragon or Persona 5?
While they have some similarities they are very, very different games. I think personally I'd stick with Yakuza 7 just because it comes in with a fresher perspective. The adult cast and taboo themes approached with levelled introspection is really uncommon and welcome in the genre for me, so I really dug it, but that sort of thing isn't for everybody.
Persona you have your more typical highschool setting and cast but a super slick UI, OST and combat system plus 200+ hours of content if you really dig into it.
My biggest disappointment in this game is that I can’t use or romance the hot Korean mob boss lady. We really need her in the next entry.
But is it better than Cyberpunk 2077?
Not sure. Waiting until 2077 comes out of beta before I give it a try.
Right now it is.
Good video but you should pronounce things correctly.
And lose the engagement it generates? Fat chance!
@@TarksGauntlet Lol touche.
I just don't like the combat style
Bleach japan truly showcase everything we hate about these horrible demanding censorship of Japanese games sjws /woke people
