- There is a proper order to play the yakuza games, and though it's changed since the series started it'd simply be too competent of me to acknowledge any such "Proper order."
Continuing my quest through the fantastic Yakuza series I finally arrive at Yakuza 0! The fan favorite!
But how does it hold up to me personally?

Like you said, Yakuza 0 seems to be the most logical entry point to the series. This looks like an absolute gem of a game with all of the quirks that will ensure it has a cult following. Your reviews never cease to amaze me; so much detail yet no spoilers. Thank you for taking the time to put this together!
Wait what polygon said yakuza 2 was the worst? Man and I thought I couldn't lose more respect for that awful website. Yakuza 2 is WIDELY considered the best before zero came along took over being the best.
The game that let me get to see and play this wonderful franchise (which will be in my top 10 for a long long time). Was a fun watch. The mini games in every Yakuza game never fail to impress, or make us laugh, or occasionally make us go wtf japan.... Brilliant Franchise, and this was our entry game into the Yakuza brand

I might crack and buy a Yakuza game some time soon. I have a coupon for used games at EB and should put that towards this game.
Yakuza 0's "Greatest hits" reprint is something like 30 dollars new I think. Definitely worth it.
Even though I have no personal interest in the Yakuza series, I will appreciate how consistent it is with regards to putting out a quality product out there despite all the entries in the series. I'm sure when it comes to all the games, there are good entries and not so stellar entries but from everything that I seen regarding the yakuza series, everybody has found at least one thing to love about them.
Really cool to see your journey through the series. While I think the writing in 0 is better than 6, I suspect that 6 probably blindsided you the most given that it was your first entry and by the time you got around to 0, you were already expecting the games to hit hard. Also I fucking laughed when you said Polygon dubbed Yakuza 2 the worst entry, when in fact Yakuza 2 is revered as a fan favorite amongst the fanbase. If you ask me, Yakuza 5 is probably the worst in the series.
6 hits me the hardest because it plays towards things I have a much stronger emotional draw to. 0 hit me hard too (especially post credit scene) but it can't compete with stories of family dynamics.
I think that I used Rush and Breaker styles the most, as they are the fastest way to build Heat and therefore also a great way to cheese out Mr. Shakedowns when paired with a Red Hot Knife to stab him with when you have filled up your meter.
I have played 6 but not 0. Might have to play this some day.

I have been wanting to play this series though :D
I played all Yakuza games, except 5, and I loved this game, the opportunity of playing the initial story of Goro Majima, a classic antagonist and we could say friend to Kiryu (that kind of relationship like Goku and Vegeta) is great, of course you could play with Majima in Dead Souls but that is a spin-off zombie third person shooter in the universe of Yakuza, I just didn´t like the fact that they took out the RPG elements and instead to upgrade your character you need to use money, but a great game neverthless.
In a way it reminds me of the dark souls approach, where your souls can be exchanged for purchases at merchants through-out the game or to level yourself up. But having it actually be money this time around does create this kind of distinction where it becomes harder to think of in those terms. At the very least they switch back to a regular xp system in later games.
I am pretty sure that 2 and 5 were considered to be the best in the series before 0 came out.

I do agree that the first few chapters feel like they go on for way longer than they should. I also don't really like the upgrade system here. But it does have one of the best stories in the series. Yakuza 5 is the worst in the mainline series. 2 has a lot more going for it than that game.
I swear 5 is the actual most divisive entry. Even just looking at the comments on this vid, so many people saying 2 and 5 were their favorites until 0 came out. Interested to find out more myself on that one haha.
I wasn't a big fan of Yakuza 2's story until a rewatched a bunch of cutscenes to it. It's a lot better than I remember. And even when I wasn't a big fan of 2, I still prefer it over 5. It wasn't half as long or as bloated as 5 was. Yakuza 5 had a weak ending too and I was surprised that Yakuza 6, actually made me appreciate it. It's a miracle how much 6 made the ending in 5 seem better than it actually was.
Yesterday was great celebrating my soulmate waifus hatsune miku birthday, completing the businesses and unlocking both characters legendary classic styles was worth it, especially at final boss fight where the guy is like I'm the dragon of domina and then u unleash kiryus classic style just perfect, polygon is 100 percent wrong yakuza 2 is amazing is one of the classics, yakuza 3 is easily the weakest in the series mainline syotyline wise as yakuza dead souls is easily the worst one, while yakuza 2 is top 3 yakuza games of all time and a lot of fans agree with this, also got to love training the dominatrix I was surprise u never mention that sub story. I train her in the tsundere way by choosing tsundere answers and the pervert like it more than the standard bdsm.
I did do that sub story, not sure if footage from it made it into this review of not, but if I mention every notable sub story these reviews would be 170 minutes instead of 17 lol. Gotta draw the line somewhere.
I believe I even made mr.piggy one of my real estate managers.
2 worst in series? ive never played it but ive often heard it cited as one of if not the best at least in terms of story although 0 seems to be regarded as generally the best now fro what I can tell.
I thought 3 was regarded as the worst of the series. Picked up 0 and kiwami recently and can't wait to get into this series. I'm starting with the prequel. I believe I'll need to adjust for a change in controls going from 0 to 1 and back again from 4 to 5 when the engines changed.
Funny how the economy in this game is so inflated that the amount of money you get after beating a couple thugs could pay your rent for a whole year in real life.
Even the homeless could afford a sports car lol
