I don't live in Hawaii, but I want to compliment you on the comprehensive videos you produce. From the location, the description of the food--taste, texture, price, personal feeling about the food--I am impressed with how complete your videos, in general, are. When you describe a food, I can imagine exactly what you mean. Your talent at expressing what you're eating is top notch, imho. Thanks for your content. Excellent! I also like that you talk about it in your car because it's much easier to hear you and understand. When you're in a restaurant with music blaring, it's a little difficult for a senior like me to hear!!
Lauren, thank you for your thoughtful comment. It makes me so happy that I can convey and describe the tastes and feelings to you of the food. I'm glad you enjoy and understand what I'm trying to do. I totally hear you on the loud restaurants. I've been doing my showcases mostly in my car and I agree it's quiet and no bugs. But some people wanted to see the restaurant experience so once in a while I go inside. I actually prefer to do the filming in the car myself. I hope you understand. Thanks so much for watching!
Lauren, you took the words right out of my mouth! Thank you, absolutely agree! I really enjoy her videos, and I have to say my favorite local RUclips food vlog! Mahalo Misty! I remember Walters wagon growing up in Aiea, and the big treat was 25 cent Saimin! Also big sellers was pake cake, ice cake and the candies was da bomb! Chico sticks and cheers candies! You really bought back memories!
Oh I'd also like to add, if you can't hear in certain restaurants I do have closed captioning in English and different languages. It is usually up right away, but that version is automated by RUclips and the grammar and spelling is wrong - especially for the Hawaiian names. It usually takes me the next day after the video goes up to edit it and convert it to different languages. I only bring this up because we recorded something in another loud restaurant yesterday. It may be helpful for these restaurant videos if you can't understand what we are saying.
You've got the perfect title for this video. So many fond memories of getting food from "the Manapua Man" as a kid. Too bad they don't have manapua anymore.
I used to live in Hawaii & went to Radford High. Every morning before school, we would stop by the manapua truck that was parked down the street. It's still one of my favorite food memories.
I Immediately Smiled when you talked about the Ewa Beach Manapua Man. His Food is So Good Except I wouldn't Highly Recommended the Pork Hash One and I say this Only Because It didn't Taste Right to me. It's A Couple that Runs that Manapua Truck. The lady would be in that truck and she works Weekdays. That's his Wife. Super Nice Couple!!! I Thank You So Much Food Fiend on This Awesome Video & All of Your Videos because it makes A Big Difference. 🫵🏻🤙🏻🙋🏻♀️

Thanks Gail! Unfortunately that kind of rice cake is so hard to find these days. No one wants to make them anymore. Probably too much hard work to produce.
The rice cake from Kin Sing Restaurant in Waipahu is the closest thing to what I remember eating during my childhood in the 1960s. They're so light and fluffy. Our manapua man used to come around Eluwene Street in Kalihi, clanging his bell and carrying manapua in large metal cans at each end of a wooden pole.
Thank you for driving all over! I really appreciate your content. During the beginning of the pandemic, I couldn’t get spam so I tried one of the other luncheon “meats” and couldn’t finish it. It was awful. Now I always have a spare Costco 6-pack.
Aloha Misty!!! Sooo much good memories!! I remember as a kid I would buy Thunder bombs and Jumping Jacks from the Manapua Man. Illegal today and def cant sell to kids now. And anytime there was 10 cents or 20 cents change he would try to be slick and give us back Jolly ranchers instead. Lol. But the food, I liked the Nanakuli fries and there was a crunch to it. The Ewa one looked good too with the Chicken and better Musubi than the PC one. Thanks for bringing back some goodnmemories with the hot dog in a bun and burrito. Mahalo🤙👍😋
The slick part about the Jolly Ranchers made me laugh. 🤣 So dirty. Yes I remember the toys, illegal stuffs and even ice cream. Now no more ice cream. But I understand. Too much equipment to lug around is a hassle. I used to love the one that parked in front of Kaneohe Court but after covid hit they disappeared.
Love this video, brings back memories! Great you're bringing light to this, and learning that our kids are eating safe and tasty simple food. Its not sketch like I always wondered
Misty, that sauce goes great with Sriracha and you're supposed to eat the fries with the noddles. I haven't eaten that in years. The fried chicken is great too.
I miss da manapua truck !!! I used to get all my goodies from Dan the manapua man in Salt Lake. S&S saimin !!! Omg .. Noodles .. lumpia , pork hash .. 50¢ sodas , candies , fried chicken .. my faves. 😍

Pork hash (siu mai) for 50 cents each - heck yah! Glad you finally found the sweet rice cake (it's becoming harder to find on the mainland too, I guess it's too old fashioned for the kids nowadays). Thx for highlighting these trucks! Luv that Hawaiian manapuas (steamed) still use yeast dough, mainland has switched to baking powder (not as fluffy as the yeast dough). Have a great weekend!
Hi H M! Wow I wonder why they stopped using yeast? Maybe too expensive. I do appreciate the fluffiness of a yeast bread over baking soda or powder. Thanks for watching again!
@@FoodFiend - it's me who should thank you for taking the time to create this awesome content! As to the switch of raising agent - takes more time to make yeast-based manapua vs baking powder, they still use yeast-based dough for baked but we prefer steamed.
Love the trip down memory lane! Manapua truck Definitely a part of my childhood! Diamondhead strawberry soda is da bestest! So happy liquor store at Hawaii Kai Shopping Center sales it! Thank you for the share once again! 😊
Mahalo Nicole! I'm happy it took you down memory lane. I'm glad you can get the Diamond Head soda in Hawaii Kai. So hard to find sometimes! I know you can get it at Sam's Club or Costco.
All awesome and I remember all of those items including the manapuas that are hard to find now. Bummer. The one that used to sit outside our high school at Kalaheo High had fried rice in wax baggies also!
Great video, Misty! Noodles and rice cake were my faves. I actually rarely bought manapua from the trucks. So I’m wierd 😅 So glad manapua trucks are still bringning their goods to the hoods 👍🏼
cute video we always ate at the pearl city manapua man usually get noodles n pork hash when we were young there was a grocery vendor that would come selling fish n vegs like a mom n pop market on wheels
Aw maybe someone can open something like T&L Market here that sells manapua man foods out of a store. That would be a hit with the locals who moved! At least you guys are getting a Zippys soon! Hopefully the food is the same there.
Hi Misty great video. Only in Hawaii u can get one review on the manapua man LOL. The noodles in the ziplock was so nostalgic. I grew up in Village Park in Waipahu and we had a manapua truck at the our basketball court as well as at the Waipahu intermediate and High School. So I saw lots of manapua trucks. Even one of my friend's family drove a manapua truck. We used to go his house and eat choke candy all the time.
Aloha Sistah~ I never really had manapua truck experience when I was going school in the 1980s...wow long time ago huh lol...but used to see them around alot back in the days...plus I didn't have any money in those days...Mahalo!🍷🤙👊
@FoodFiend my school lunch was 10 cents and school bus was 15 cents lol...am I really that old??? I still feel like 20s in my heart though...still dreaming I kkknnnooowww 😂🤣😂🫣
Very enjoyable video, Misty! You made me laugh when you tried the not-Spam musubi, because somehow I knew you would say that you can get better ones at 7 Eleven. Guess I’ve been watching you for awhile! Always fun to travel along with you. Thanks!
Aloha Misty: Thank you for bringing back the memories of living in Hawaii. I still have great memories of chasing the-ringing-of-the-bell of the “Manapua Man,” announcing his arrival, during his rounds around Palama Street and Vineyard Blvd. In the past, manapua vendors used to source their manapua from a Chinese bakery located on Maunakea Street where Bo Wah Conpany is located - long gone. These days, I chase the taco trucks - LOL. Hope you got some great treats for Aiden during your production of this vlog. Keep-up the great production of the vlog! Best wishes to you and the ohana, my fellow 🐯-almni! Much 🤙and 🧧!
Aloha Bill! Good to know where the manapuas were sourced from. Sadly all the good places are gone or going away such as Char Hung Sut. Chasing taco trucks is not a bad option either! 🤣 Have a great weekend fellow Tiger! 🤙
@@FoodFiend Sadly, you are so correct, Char Hung Sut was the last of the old-fashioned manapua makers! The newer places, such as Royal Kitchen, are good but I do miss the older styles. Looking forward to your next great vlog. Best wishes for a “yummy” weekend for you and your son! 😀
Hey, you were in my neck of woods-EB. There's usually 2 trucks there on N. Road but the one you went to is the one I go to if I have a nostalgic urge for noodles and chicken. Back in the day, I'm talkin 1985 ish and beyond, multiple manapua trucks/vans would get to park right along "O" building. When lunch came around and the cafe menu wasn't appetizing we'd go to the trucks and for $0.50 get a large bag of noodles and 2 pork hash ($0.25 each). Not bad for a $1. Too bad the old Kamsco dive isn't around. It used to be right across from Ilima intermediate school. The sauce in the burger was to die for. And the french fries...way better than McD. It's not a truck but since you were in EB I thought about them.🤙🏼
Oh you guys were lucky it came near the school side. More convenient for the kids. I wish I could've tried the Kamsco burger and fries. Sounds delicious! Mahalo!
Old school Chinese don't get food poisoning. We grew up eating food that has been left sitting out on the table since grandma cooked it in the morning. Kids were built tough back then.
Hey Misty! The crisp on everything at your first stop seems good! Not a bad deal on the noodles. The prices are great for everything. Perfect for quick snacks and you get full. Your Pearl City stop was cool too but agree, prefer the real Spam on the musubi. I like the options at Le's Nanakuli like the fries special and rice cake. Can't go wrong with the fried burrito in Ewa! Really enjoyed this video and your highlighting each truck!
I noticed the Dallas Growers market Shirt. There is or was a very famous eatery there. I haven't been in such a long time, so I am not sure if it is still there.
Yeah I was surprised. But at the same time I kind of figured with this economy it would not make economic sense to make it yourself or buy it somewhere else to make a profit. Mahalo Dave!
That’s true Misty. Gee, I miss school days eating at the manapua trucks! I still remember the wax paper bags with chow mein noodles, and rice cake! Good times!
I miss the half moons. Kind of wish there were someway to order half moons. I luve in colirado. I order stuffs from highwsy inn and las vegas but nobody has half moons. I was raised on manapua truck food in nanskuli. They would take food stsmps in the days lol
Made it out to the manapua-less truck near my house. It was ok. Still on the hunt for pork hash. Got the noodles and lumpia. He has been there forever. A friend said her fiance used to go to his truck when he went to Pearl City High School at least 15 years ago!
Yes it's not the greatest but it'll do the job. Amazing how long these guys been feeding the kids. I think the only decent pork hash is Chun wah Kam and Sing Cheong Yuan Bakery in Chinatown for takeout. Unless you want to sit down at a dim sum place. These places are going away. I like 7-11 pork hash.
I never knew there was a truck right near where I live! Want to try out their pork hash...since Char Hung Sut closed, we havent found a pork hash we love! Thanks, Misty for checking it out.
Yes close by. I'm not sure it can compare to Char Hung Sut but it's pretty good for cheap food! Unfortunately I think I'd rank his truck last out of all of them. I like the pork hash but not the musubi.
This was SUCH a great video! Your channel takes me down food-memory lane. This reminded me of when after regular school i used to go to japanese school in nuuanu. Us keeds would cross the street and from a literal hole in the wall i’d buy fried noodles from an old japanese lady. Yup, no such thing as “customer service” as she was grouchy and mean but now i know the lady was just tired and hot. Those noodles though, that came with maybe one piece of cabbage and an even smaller piece of “pork” (straight up fat/gristle) was ambrosia at that small kid time. I savored every bite as i ate the noodles one by one. You’ve also mentioned in other videos about how during a field trip you’d get a frozen can of juice wrapped in tin foil. That’s totally how it was 😆👊, nevah had hydro kine flask technologies then. And yes to strawberry diamond head soda! Great video as it not only showcases these hardworking folks but it paints a picture of what it was like to grow up in the 70’s-ish on oahu 👍🤙🌈!
Aw thanks for sharing your memories. Similar to mine and everyone else's. Some people just grouches. 🤣 and yes to the aluminum foil. Nowadays these kids are spoiled with Yetis and Hydroflasks. We didn't even bring water to school. Just drink from the warm nasty water fountain or hot hose water. 🤣
@@FoodFiend Lol i was just talking to my childhood best friend about how no one ever talked about staying “hydrated” back in the day. Drinking water at school meant standing in line when the PE teacher told you to and you had your 10 second turn to drink warm water from the fountain! Later the school put in those “fancy” chilled water fountains and it was like “Hoh! We movin’ on up!”. Like my grandpa from maui used tell me “Jus drink pipe watah!” which meant from the tap or hose pipe if we were outside....was good enough and i don’t think i have any ailments from it 😆👌!
Hey Misty 🤟🏼🌺 I loved this longer video. I’ve heard of manapua but of course being in Australia I’ve never had anything like that. It’s good to know he is feeding the school kids good food after school. The fried chicken and noodles looked really yum, nice and crispy. Great reviews as always hun. Have a great weekend
Hi AussieAngie! I think you can find it in Australia in a Chinese restaurant perhaps. The real name is char siu bao. It's a soft white steamed bread filled with sweet pork in the middle. Manapua is a local slang for it here in Hawaii. You should try it. 😊
@@FoodFiend oh yea we can get those. If that’s the case I’ve had them before and they are so delicious and pillowy 😍😍 I didn’t know that they were the same thing haha. Thanks hun
We want to find the manapua man now!! This was great Misty for sharing the various manapua trucks and what each had to offer. The noodles in the plastic bag is how some food vendors package food in the Philippines so it was cool to see that in Hawai’i. Really liked the hot dog in the manapua bun. That’s like kolaches that we have here in Texas!! Mahalo for always sharing the great eats!! 🤙🏽🙌🏽😋👍🏽
Hi Michelle and Jose! Yes it's a big part of the old culture here. I think the closest one to Waikiki is the one in Kaka'ako near the park. He has no signs and it's a grey step van. But once you see the side you can view the food. I hope you get to try it some day. Have a great weekend!
@@FoodFiend is he at the Waterfront Park? Wonder if he has manapua?!? We’ll check him out but definitely thinking we’ll check out the one in Nanakuli since we’ll be over in Kapolei to check out Broke Da Mouth after your review and then Sean’s review 😋!! Sooo many places to eat from but so little stomach space!! 🤣 Have a great rest of your weekend!!🤙🏽
@@michellejosefoodandtravel No he's by Mother Waldron Park. The small park near Salt. Yes can't go wrong with the Nanakuli truck. Just be safe there as a tourist though. Have a great weekend!
Howzit! So I'm really late to this discussion...but one of my favorite manapua is Kalua pig filled! However, it's increasingly difficult to find today. Char siu is great, but back in small kid time, there was a small store across from Punahou School that sold a manapua that had a filling that was more savory and less sweet than most char siu. Wasn't all red with dyes, just yummy! And then, why is it that no one makes one with pork hash filling? Most restaurants that make manapua also make pork hash, so...? 2 cents...
Hi Gen! Yeah I like kalua pig filled manapuas. The curry ones aren't bad either. Having a pork hash one is a great idea. I think I'd like those more as it is the filling that isn't exactly my favorite because of the sweetness.
I miss Hawaii..... The Manapua van had the best food, unhealthy but the best 😄. Shouldn't mention this cause I was not an 😇 growing up but the Manapua man never card checked for smokes haha.
🤣 I totally hear you on the no carding during our childhood. I always went to the small store near the bus stop across A'ala Park and most little stores never carded either. 🤙💗
Yah they used to call out manapua pepeau manapua pepeau they come up Haleakala ave Nanakuli than it was really ono and they still out there Haleakala ave by Mano ave
Nope. Born and raised here. Left for college to the mainland for 4 years and came back and been here since. I can turn my local accent on or off. I prefer to speak without pigeon so others can understand. I have no culinary background besides cooking at home since I was a kid. My mother was in the culinary industry and I watched my grandma cook as a kid. I'm just a normal person who likes to eat and share what I like and promote local businesses while at it. 🤷🏻♀️
Mahalo. But that is what my channel is about though - the food. I did try to ask the first manapua man and he declined to be on camera. The rest were just too busy with a long line.
I actually really liked the first one's chicken and won ton. The noodles were ok. The PC one I only liked his pork hash. But these two trucks actually sell out most days and are very popular with online posts. So it's a matter of taste. The best one out of the 4 was Le's in Nanakuli.

@@FoodFiend i think the pc manapua man name was padre? all the pc kids used to call him that
Oh I miss that Manapua Truck on Nanakuli Ave so dearly 😢😢😢😢😢😢wish they had that ova hea on Da 9th island
Aw maybe someone can open something like T&L Market here that sells manapua man foods out of a store. That would be a hit with the locals who moved! At least you guys are getting a Zippys soon! Hopefully the food is the same there.
I used to grab fried noodles with the special sauce and fried chicken from the manapua man by nanakuli high school. I would eat there everyday.
Oh wow. His food was the best out of the 4.
I like the way you are so flexible in mixing your food combo to make up for less from the noodles w/o veggie or lil bit char siu.
I was sad all did not have a little bit of meat or veg but it was workable.
That was so interesting. 😀
I'm glad you thought it was interesting! 🤙
Wow lucky you guys had a friend that had a manapua truck! I'd have so many cavities and be round from all that candy. 🤣
Aloha Sistah~ I never really had manapua truck experience when I was going school in the 1980s...wow long time ago huh lol...but used to see them around alot back in the days...plus I didn't have any money in those days...Mahalo!🍷🤙👊
Oh no! Back then 50 cents could get you a meal.
@FoodFiend my school lunch was 10 cents and school bus was 15 cents lol...am I really that old??? I still feel like 20s in my heart though...still dreaming I kkknnnooowww 😂🤣😂🫣
Thank you for show us the Manapua truck food ,food are so cheap and look very good ,Hope is still cheap on our next trip to Honolulu Mahalo 🌺🌺🌺
Mahalo for watching! I hope the prices stay the same for you. 🤙
Best Manapua man was back in mid 80s at King Intermediate, well on Heeia St off Kam
Very enjoyable video, Misty! You made me laugh when you tried the not-Spam musubi, because somehow I knew you would say that you can get better ones at 7 Eleven. Guess I’ve been watching you for awhile! Always fun to travel along with you. Thanks!
Thanks Elizabeth! I'm glad you enjoyed the video and you get my dry humor and odd personality. 🤣🤙
Good lookin out Misty.
Mahalo Walt. Have a good weekend! 👍
I used to buy from the manapua man in Ewa Beach 🏖️
Awesome job! ❤
Mahalo! 🤙
@@FoodFiend yea. Now I can go hunt these guys down. 🤣 I always wondered where to find the manapua man. Thank you.
@@ginamalia1837 You're welcome!
Thanks for watching Tina and Connie! 🤙 You should try a truck one day. 😊
I noticed the Dallas Growers market Shirt. There is or was a very famous eatery there. I haven't been in such a long time, so I am not sure if it is still there.
Ah! I just got it because of the logo of the big eggplant on the back with the cowgirl riding it. Made me giggle and I like to garden.
Really enjoyed watching this Misty!!! I didn’t know that they don’t sell manapua!!
Oh no. Yeah half moons are so hard to find on the mainland. I remember food stamps for the manapua truck or trading for cash LOL
@Food Fiend I think I tried 7-11's before, but maybe not...I'll give them a try next. Thanks!
How did I not know about Lim's? I basically just live a couple of blocks away. Damn, I need to go out more
That's ok! We are sometimes all so busy that we don't notice some things. You're lucky he's in your neighborhood! ✌🤙
If you're ever in nanakuli again, try Stephen. Chicken sandwich with a nanakuli special and a large blue vanilla 🤙🏽
Hooo, that sounds so good. Thanks for the tip!
@@FoodFiend ok got the right park now!! Thanks for the advice too for Nanakuli!! 🤙🏽
Dat manapua man get nice van!
Yeah the first two were modernized for sure.
Yah they used to call out manapua pepeau manapua pepeau they come up Haleakala ave Nanakuli than it was really ono and they still out there Haleakala ave by Mano ave
Nanakuli has the best followed by Ewa. Just my opinion.
I agree. And Kalihi 3rd. PC last.
I second that, I used to live in Ewa Beach and worked all over Nanakuli, Waianae, Makaha and all over Oahu, Nanakuli does have the best.
Yeah hanging is the bomb
I meant Hong helelua
My manapua man had a pole with two cans hanging down. Circa 1940's.
Unfortunately on Maui we don't have manapua man. Wish we did
Aw Im sorry. Maybe someone can start one. They'd make a killing!
@@FoodFiend right it'd be convenient for students or employees or just ppl that can't drive
Love manapua. Esp the char siu
🤤🤙
Da Manapua Man in Pearl City is closing on October 24??? 😭
@jikotakuhaibin yeah I just read about it. Glad I went. North Star on School Street also closed before I could get down there.
That looked like Treet luncheon “meat”. Charged me the extra quarter and buy the spam.
Yep that Treet and Tulip stuff is a no go for me. The only luncheon meat I liked was that small slice in the old S&S saimin bowls.
Hey Misty ~ I’d rather watch you do cheap eats than Guy Hagi 😅
🤣 Aw thanks. Maybe I should do the weather too. 😊
We need a manapua man in waialua
I bet they would make money if they went after school for the kids and near the beach.
Eh, Where’s the Chick-O-Stick?
Sounds like you left Hawaii for sometime and then came back showcasing local staples 🤷🏽♂️
My question is what kine of culinary background you have?
They accepted food stamps too..back when everythinh was 50 cents and.one dollar
Palolo housing get one good one too
Oh good to know. Thank you.
Vong is only there weekdays he off on weekends
Aw I never see him. Went on Friday (yesterday).
Nice vid though focused too much on the food when should of have more interaction with the manapua man or in this case the truck driver.
Mahalo. But that is what my channel is about though - the food. I did try to ask the first manapua man and he declined to be on camera. The rest were just too busy with a long line.
Seems the first two manapua trucks are a waste of time. Can tell by your reviews you're trying to be nice but both places look really junk. 🤢
I actually really liked the first one's chicken and won ton. The noodles were ok. The PC one I only liked his pork hash. But these two trucks actually sell out most days and are very popular with online posts. So it's a matter of taste. The best one out of the 4 was Le's in Nanakuli.
