that lyric, "said I don't go where I'm supposed to go, no I don't go, really, anywhere you know..." the way its sung, it just hits you so hard.. How do you do that? Elliott had something so special. NO ONE, has been able to make such beautiful, yet haunting hooks. Keep in mind this is a throwaway song in his eyes, yet a lot of artist would have LOVED to write this. The exit of this song ALWAYS gives me chills, you can seriously feel pain in that last repeat of the chorus.
I would loved to write this song for real.. If i had written it, id probably think or it would probably be the best song i would have ever written or will ever would have written. But im not jealous of Elliott... He's giving me a.lot of solace through out the years with his songs. Miss him bad
New Moon has always hit with such unbridled emotion, pain, bittersweet highs juxtaposing such nuanced melancholy. That describes almost all of Elliott’s music tbf but the thing about this album in particular is just how genuine and unguarded he sings. The emotions come off as reactionary as if he is experiencing them and responding directly to whoever, himself or whatever is causing then. And for me, the lack of normal Elliott production techniques plays a big part in why they have such a heavy impact on me when I listen to New Moon. There’s a noticeable lack of vocal layering, instrument layering, etc… just like in Needle in the Hay, which was one of only two songs in the album that did not layer the vocals. One vocal take playing alone, unaccompanied by another layer.. it’s a beautiful effect he uses to its full potential, because when he does not use layered vocals, the vulnerability in his words, and the emotion in his voice make thingy create some of his most genuine recordings to date… with New Moon embodying this style beautifully.. . I spend a lot longer than I thought trying to explain this nuance in Elliotts playing and recording , I hope it makes sense in reading it like it did in my head as I tried to explain .
I _LOVE_ how imperceptibly this builds. Starting with this husky whisper-like voice and then all of a sudden you're at the fix; high times is literally being screamed out. Then it all fades, time to start all over again. Don't go where you're supposed to go. ...You're crying.
It's important to remember these songs: to remember that this is a double album of outtakes that didn't even make it onto the two albums pressed during their composition. It's important because so many of them are understated masterpieces, like Smith's work as a whole. If you have in yourself a creative spark, whatever your medium, remember this: It's not important to remember these songs so as to become discouraged; but rather, it's important to remember these songs to take them in as fuel with which the singular spark in you and only you might shine, for its time, in this place. For any who needs to see or hear or know what you have to say.
Elliott just sang with so much emotion. He made you feel what he was feeling.. he was just so talented in every way. Being able to play so many instruments (and to play them well) and being one of the best song writers of our time..(lyrically and writing the song structure.. he is definitely missed..it sucks that he had to leave this world too soon..I was really looking forward to hearing his new music and how he would grow as an artist. When I found out about his passing in 2004, it shattered my world. I really was in love with Elliott. I locked myself in my bedroom and cried for 3 days straight. I remember my mom asking what was wrong, & telling her. .and her response was, " I don't know why you're so upset. It's not like you even knew him". But I really felt like I did know him. I'm sure a lot of his fans feel the same as me. Elliott was different than every one else. And once he found his way into your life, you didn't want him to leave..all his songs are so beautiful! They help you out with every emotion you will feel throughout your life. He definitely helped me and I can't thank him enough for being there when I needed it. He got me through a lot of really horrible circumstances..I just wish he was still here.
I think this is my favorite elliott song. the xylophone sounding tings at the beginning are so perfect. The build up to the first time he finally let's out HIGH TIMES... it's perfectly carried out.

Coma kid taught me how
He'd come to follow you around
Wherever you go
Said I don't go where I'm supposed to go
And I don't go really anywhere you know
Told me how he's driven by a curse
'Til he kicked out into reverse
Said I don't go where I'm supposed to go
And I don't go really anywhere you know
I made up my mind and I don't mind saying so
I went to meet you at central square
And when I couldn't find you there
I went walking around the city some more
People watching with a cold blank stare
And I saw your face in everyone I swear
Seems I never get your kick quite right
I was walkin' slow to a dirty dive
I'm so sick and tired tryin' to change your mind
When its so easy to disconnect mine
High times
High times
High times
Yeah I feel fine
High times
High times
High times
Man I feel fine
Don't pick me up
I'm fine right where I am
I don't go where I'm supposed to go
Where I'm supposed to go
