Let's not speculate about his decisions. Many of the best artists have unfortunately been troubled. He is a product of the world, but certainly not the masses as a distinct voice. The paradox is that we enjoy this very personal and brilliant music yet he struggled with the music industry and its pressures.

I much, much prefer this version, but this take is one of my favorite E.S. songs. On the S/T record, I gotta say, "Coming Up Roses" and "St. Ideas Heaven" overshadow the rest so much as isolated tunes go, that unless I'm just playing the whole record through where it all works, I don't generally reach for any of the other tracks as stand-alones.

@@nicholasfaith8999 Nice, dude. I actually never knew anything about Failure, until I was at an early-ish (around '05) Autolux show, and a few people in the crowd were there having sort of 'crossed-over' from being into Failure, and after talking to them I doubled back to check them out. Cos for me, Autolux was like a band that fell out of the sky, I mean they used recognizable elements from various genres, but the things put together were always pleasantly surprising. Most any band that used shoegaze-esque guitars, for example, had essentially a mechanical rhythm section, but Carla can cut loose like a jazz player, and that first single ("Turnstile Blues") bases the whole thing around a glitched-out but utterly human drum beat. Anyway, sorry, went off on an Autolux-ramble there, haha. To tie it back to Elliott again: There's a couple of other late-period songs that I also feel the same connection in: "A Passing Feeling", for one, in many parts feels like it IS an Autolux song--the fractured, twinkling tack piano, soothing but somehow also menacing vocal delivery, and especially the 'walking through quicksand' trudge effect once the heavy guitars kick in. Man, I really wish he would've at least been able to finish that last record. Easily my favorite

No bad dream fuckers’ gonna boss me around,
Christian Brothers’ gonna take him down,
But it can’t help me get over…
    Don’t be a cross, this sick i want…
I’ve seen the boss blink on and off…
Fake concern says:”what’s the matter, man?”
And you think I ought to shake your motherfucking hand?!
Well, I know how much you care…
    Don’t be a cross, this sick i want…
I’ve seen the boss blink on and off…

    Don’t be a cross, this sick i want…
I’ve seen the boss blink on and off…
Come here, by me, I want you here…
Nightmares become me, it’s so fucking clear…
NIGHTMARES BECOME ME, ITS SO FUCKING CLEAR…
[p.s: *The analysis of the lyrics*
The title of this song is so clever, Elliott is literal poet, Christian Brothers is not only the name of Brandy company but also that’s how a christian religious group is called, members of which have been accused of sexual harassment towards children…
“Bad dream fucker” quite obviously is his sexually abusive step father and alcohol “will take him down”, meaning that it is the way he uses to cope, but he will never be able to get over, as he says…
“Don’t be a cross” is a double message as well, he might sarcastically mean the purity of the idea of family in terms of christianity and that’s why he mentions cross, but he might also mean cross as angry, he also might mean himself asking his step father to not be angry at him..
“This sick I want” sounds like he has to choose between multiple sicknesses and he’d rather get sick by alcohol then by sobriety, that causes painful memories to be awakened…
“Boss blinking on and off” is his father, changing his attitude towards him, sometimes being nice to him and sometimes being abusive…
“Fake concern” shown by his step father makes Elliott mad, he feels disgusted by just the idea of shaking his hand, because he knows how much he actually cares- he does not at all, if he did, he’d never harm him in any way… him being the reason of his addiction and still asking “what’s the matter, man” fuels Elliott, rightfully so…
“Come here, by me, I want you here”( literally crying rn) is the most painful part and might be understood in two ways:
    1. Shows his step father’s disgusting and abusive bossy attitude towards him;
    2. Elliott speaking to alcohol as his savior, desiring it to forget it all with the help of it
And lastly, “Nightmares become me, it’s so fucking clear” is the most tragic part, the song starts with Elliott calling his sexually abusive step father “bad dream fucker” just to end the song with him saying he himself turned into a nightmare as well, he became someone he fears and it pains him, “its so fucking clear” is used to contrast with Elliott being Alcoholic, his vision being blurry, foggy when drunk but the memories and pain being still painfully clear.
This is the first years of Elliott living in L.A, he’s newly escaped from the madness going on in his family, forming band with friends and calling is Heatmiser, but when he starts his solo career as a single-songwriter, he includes this song in the first- self titled album as well, even though, the originally it was performed by Heatmiser, the version you’re listening to now is an old version and quite objectively is better than Self-titled album version…
( the analysis is NOT mine, I just wanted y’all to know what the song is about, i just feel like you can’t listen to it without knowing the backstory, if you want to read the original, just google it, the lyrics are discussed way deeper there)
