    Thank you very much for the perfect video. I appreciate the production value. Pro tip for anyone that reads this, when you install the replacement actuator and the gear is not clocked around to accept it. You can take apart the old actuator, remove the gear and use it like a tool to to move the dampers into the correct place so the splines match up and the new actuator just slides right on.

      Thanks. I was really wishing I had something like this to go off of before I attempted it myself, but all I could find were people complaining about how hard it was to get to. I'm really happy with the camera angles I was able to get with my GoPro.
      You do have to be careful when moving the damper around so that it doesn't fall out of place. I accidentally knocked off the white plastic piece when I was moving around getting the camera and light situated and it was hard to get everything lined back up.

    I just traded for this 05 Titan and now that it's getting cold i noticed it only blows air out of the dash vents.
    I looked up actuators and it popped up your video.
    Thanks for the detailed replacement info. I've been dreading it, but it looks much easier than the one i replaced on our Ford Flex.

      You’re welcome! Yes, the mode actuator is somewhat simple to replace, as long as you don’t have the Rockford Fosgate stereo system (that significantly restricts access). It does require laying on your back and some hand gymnastics, but still relatively straightforward.
      I haven’t had to replace the temperature actuator on mine, but I’ve heard it is extremely hard to access.

    I used this to guide me through the replacement of this actuator on my 2005 Titan. Mine is a base model that doesn't have the high-end stereo. I bought the new actuator off eBay for about $16. I was not as lucky as you in this video and knocked loose the cam plate that controls the two levers. But it only took a few minutes to get it back into its proper place after removing the cover over it. What I especially liked about your video is that you explained which functions this particular actuator controls. I looked at some exploded diagrams of the Titan's HVAC system and it has like 5 actuators on it. My Titan would only blow air out into the footwells, not out the dash vents like you need in the summertime.

      It was a bit frustrating when I was trying to figure out how to do it; because all of the videos I found were extremely long of people complaining about how hard it was to replace. I personally didn't find it very difficult to replace, although it is quite awkward laying partially on your back in the floorboard while doing hand gymnastics above your head!

    • @FixandMaintain
      @FixandMaintain  4 года назад +4

      You're welcome! The main reason I made this video is because, before I replaced my actuator, I watched several videos and none were straightforward on how to do it. I went at it myself and, when I saw how easy it was (easy is a relative term, it does require laying on your back and having your hands in an awkward position), just had to make a video. As for taking the whole dash apart, was it for the driver's side actuator or was it for the one on the passenger side? I haven't had to replace mine (yet), so I don't know how hard it is to get to.

    • @alexlui1182

      Before I did this job, I was looking at other RUclips videos and all I could find is people frustrated at how "hard" it was, but didn't even give clear instructions or even what tools to use. I knew I needed to do a tutorial, but I had no idea it would be such a popular video or that it would shoot to the top of Google searches!

  • @Dynamike117
    @Dynamike117 2 года назад +1

    This helped me do the job, took about 1 hour and a lot of bad words. For the 7 mm screw right by the bracket you'll need a wrench as opposed to a ratchet. A ratchet won't fit between that mount and the screw. Also, big thing to add. Your new actuator will come with the teeth "opening" pointing up, but the actuator you take off your vehicle may have the teeth in a different orientation (pointing left or right), you'll need to take your new actuator apart so that the "opening" is in the exact same position as the one you're replacing or it won't fit. It's very easy to take apart and just turn the teeth to where it should be to match your old actuator.

    • @FixandMaintain
      @FixandMaintain  2 года назад +1

      Thanks for adding that about the teeth orientation. I guess mine was stuck in a different position than yours, because my new actuator fit in place with only turning it slightly to the side. But, it's definitely worth paying attention to before trying to install it.

    I bought a used 2005 Titan and noticed this "clicking" noise on day one. After watching many RUclips videos and having mechanical skills I decided to replace the actuator on the drivers side. The part I ordered was not the same as the one I took out. The replacement part had the "gear' type drive and my actuator had a "double D" type drive. I did hours of research on this and through a friend got connected to the local Nissan dealers parts department where I found out that some early 2005 production units have the "double D" type drive. The "double D" type drive can be found from various sources, , ,

      Very interesting! By "Double D" you're referring to the drive end of the actuator that connects to the truck? I'll try to do some more research on that so that I can include links to both actuators in the description along with a note to check which one you have before ordering!

    Does your Titan have the Rockford Fosgate stereo?

      Just an update, if you have sat radio and rockford system its more difficult, you have to remove the bcm, then the 10mm screws mounting the amp and sat receiver to the bracket the bcm sits on. Then you will need to remove the accelerator to (3 12 mm nuts) get enough room to wiggle it out so add 10mm and 12mm sockets to the list. You should be able to see the 2 amp plugs you need to get out above the accelerator, and 1 for the sat radio but note there is also a purple antenna lead on the upper left side of the sat radio module too that you have to unplug.

      This actuator should control those functions, but if it’s changing randomly, it may be a wiring or control dial issue rather than a bad actuator. I can’t say for sure, since I’ve never ran into that scenario, but I wouldn’t count on a new actuator fixing your issue.

    I need to replace my cold/hot actuator. Dredding it because it's in the center of the dash and the entire dash needs to be removed to get to it. Do the actuators come preset for the dials to be pointed in a specific direction or do you just install and hope for the best?

    • @FixandMaintain
      @FixandMaintain  3 года назад +3

      They don’t come pre-set to my knowledge. They actually do have what appears to be a limiter switch built into one of the gears inside the actuator, so that it “knows” what is fully open and fully closed.
      Before you take the whole dash off, you should try to see if you can get to it either by removing the glove box and/or radio. Sometimes people exaggerate how much actually has to be removed and, if you have the right tools, can be done much faster by doing some hand gymnastics and taking a less invasive approach.

      I’m not sure. It may make more of a difference if the fresh air/recirculate actuator were stuck in between. But again, much easier to take out the bad actuator and install a new one all at once.

    I have a 2008 Titan w/automatic a/c that doesn’t blow and clicks for 25 sec. when pushing the buttons that show horizontal air flow to the body. I checked the only fuse that I could see that would be for the a/c - 10 amp HVAC - and it look like it was ok. Are there 2 separate problems or does one effect the other?

    • @FixandMaintain
      @FixandMaintain  Год назад

      When you say that A/C doesn't blow, do you mean the blower motor isn't running or the air is coming out, but not cold?
      As for the clicking, there are a few actuators that operate the various blend doors on the Titan. The easiest way to tell if it's the Mode Door actuator is to put your finger on it while it's making the clicking noise. If you can feel it clicking, then there's your culprit. Unfortunately if it's not the mode blend door, the others are located behind the dash and require much more work to get to.

      Definitely two separate problems. If the entire HVAC system weren’t getting power, then the actuator wouldn’t be getting power to cause the clicking noise. So you may have to replace the blower motor in addition to one of the blend door actuators. It’s impossible for me to fully diagnose it without taking a look at it, but hopefully I’ve been able to help a little.

I doubt it’s in the same location as my blend door actuator in my Titan, as the actuator for heat/cold for mine is behind the dash and accessed through the glove box (I think, I haven’t had to replace that one, yet). If you can easily replicate the noise, I’d look for a schematic for your vehicle for the location of the actuators, then feel each one as you get it to make the clicking sound. Honestly I think the majority of people with first Gen titans would never have to replace these actuators in the first place if they would slowly, one by one switch from vent to vent.
    My titan is 13 years old and the blend door actuator still works because I turn the dial one click, wait, then turn it again, wait, then turn again and so on until I get the vent I'm looking for. I don't skip ahead. Don't over work the actuator, treat it nicely.

      I’m going to have to disagree with you on that. Mine didn’t give me any problems until I was leaving work one morning with the temp below freezing and I had to turn the defroster on. I think the blend door was frozen in place and moving it before the truck was warmed up may have caused the gear to break.
      I personally think turning one click at a time and waiting in between would cause more stress on the actuator, since it constantly has to overcome static friction instead of continuing the motion in one go.

Being able to switch the blend door to all positions (upper vents to lower vents to defrost) is important to me and well worth the $18 I spent on a new actuator and the 30 minutes it took to install it. Also helps years down the road when I go to sell the truck and can tell the buyer that the truck doesn't have any issues.

      @@FixandMaintain dont sell the Titan. Keep it forever. Till its a rusty pile.
      But on the actuator, mine still switches everywhere it should, it just clicks and takes a few extra seconds till it finally grabs. Not sure if mine broke in a unique way, but as ive said its been going for atleast 8 years and hasnt broken further. So ive just left it.
      If its anything like the stupid gas tank filler neck, its going to keep failing. Ive gotten at least 3 of them replaced under warranty its super annoying because they just got replaced with the same part, or one with the same issue.

      Ok, that makes more sense. Mine broke off enough teeth on one of the gears that it wouldn’t switch to defrost.
      What issue have you had with the gas filler neck? I’ve had my 07 Titan for six years and haven’t had any issues (besides making a whistling noise when it’s getting full, but not not really an issue). Maybe the previous owner fixed the problem before I bought it 🤷🏼‍♂️.

      @@FixandMaintain i have an 04 a very early 04. it spits gas when you fill it too quickly. its likely due to a breather getting clogged up or something. but it always happens. so its ignored as long as possible. problem is that it causes the check engine light to come on sometimes eventually. i just replaced it recently without warranty and its likely still going to do the same thing.
      its been in my family since 05 i think. only had 1300 miles on it. only issue that sort of happened early were the power steering and radiator both died when the truck was 11 years old . ive had to replace wheel bearings and all that. besides 1. no other out of the ordinary issues. i love the thing.

    He makes it so easy to replace but the truth is this 2nd actuator location is very hard to get to. Some loosen screws and disconnect and bend wire harnesses frame just to loosen screws. Screws sizes are not the same. Stupid Nissan. This would be my last nissan.

      My truck has been a fantastic vehicle and has had very few problems overall. I'm not defending Nissan, but I'm sure you can find many things to be frustrated about on any vehicle.
      On my Titan, other than having to lay on my back in the driver's floorboard and do some hand gymnastics, this actuator wasn't that hard to replace. It definitely helped that I have the standard sound system so that I don't have the extra Rockford Fosgate audio controller in the way.

    That's not the "blend door" actuator that's the "mode door" actuator just in case you don't know the difference.

    • @FixandMaintain
      @FixandMaintain  2 года назад +1

      I agree that that particular part does change the blend of the mode door, but the part is called an “HVAC Blend Door Actuator,” thus my use of “blend door” in the title. If the part had been called the mode door actuator, I would have titled it accordingly. Even if you search Mode Door Actuator on Amazon, the results all say blend door actuator.

      Just left my mechanic who’s working on a couple other things.
      I have the blend door actuator issue (passenger side blows cold, drivers side blows warm with the dual Climate control). He quoted $750 and a 5 hour job. I imagine he’s thinking he’s got to take the dash apart but I told him not to fix it and I will tackle it soon.

      And it does the ticking noise when changing from defrost to vent to foot etc. so I agree on the blend door actuator title

    • @FixandMaintain
      @FixandMaintain  2 года назад +1

      Tim, to my knowledge, there’s three different actuators in the Titan: Mode blend door, Temp blend door, & recirculate/fresh air door. With dual climate control, there should be two temp blend doors. The temp and recirc actuators are closer to the passenger side and may require dash disassembly. The mode blend door is the only one that I’ve had to replace, but if I do have to replace the others in the future, I’ll definitely be doing a video on it.

    • @timtaylor3497
      @timtaylor3497 2 года назад

      I agree on the 3 actuators. But when you mention 2 for dual climate control, then isn’t there really 4? Regardless I don’t think it’s the the drivers side by foot panel area and it’s the same one in your video up higher on the drivers side. Especially when I can feel it in that area and the ticking from going say from defrost back to floor and to face vent etc.

      No, sorry. This is for the defrost/head/foot directional control motor. What it sounds like you need to replace is the air mix door motor. I haven't had to replace that in my Titan, so I can't help you out (at least I haven't had to replace it yet...).
