I love rap because of poetry.
Poem are purposely hard to understand with complicated formats and word play to confuse the reader.

Biggie Smalls was the most talented/best rapper of all time. He is so underrated it's not even funny. Within two Albums he became the Icon of flow and rhythem. Biggie's lyrics are so well thought out, so smooth, you just don't hear anything close to that today. Granted, he didn't really talk about much other than some of his past or his subtle brags but he could paint a story over and over again. On top of that his rhymes and they way he lays them out, he changes his tone and his speed constantly.

rap is more complicated and in some ways better than poetry, in rap you have to add rhytme to it, poetry doesn't have to rhyme, it just has to sound beauitful. but in rap it has to sound beautiful, be on time AND it has to rhyme, so to me its the next level of poetry, like the next step. straight up

    • @eduardmanecuta5350
      @eduardmanecuta5350 3 года назад +6

Poetry at first was accompanied by music (harp) and rhyme. If I not mistake, from Walt Wittman came the tren of free vers. Maybe I'm wrong. Because I think of poetry from Asia. I don't think that there poetry is lambic verse. But that's because of the way they write, or because of the language? In my country usually is the poetry with verse that is more known. We have great poets who wrote in free verse as well. But I think it's more hard to write poetry in rhyme then free verse. In my language not all words that finish with the same termination rhyme (in the sense that have musicality) like for exemple noon/ moon in english language. In RAP you can bend some words that don't rhyme on the page. Some RAP for exemple "Renegate" on page doesn't rhyme but the way some words are stressed it makes it to rhyme.
And poetry doesn't only need to sound beautiful. It needs to say something. At least in my opinion.

I find the culture and art of black people to be fascinating. There is a pattern that I see amongst black artists that is disheartening. Black artists are always talking about how they and their art should be viewed by the rest of the world. Unfortunately as an artist you can't have it both ways. You can't make art and then tell others what they should think of it. It just doesn't work that way. If you are an artist and you are not your own worst critic you and your art are doomed.

    • @rievans57
      @rievans57 10 лет назад +4

Poets like Shakespeare, Whitman, Dunbar, Brooks and Angelou are immersed in centuries of form and structure. These poetic forms date back over a thousand years. Hip hop originated in 1979. It's like mixing apples with oranges to compare rap music or rap lyrics with poetry. What I feel some are doing is trying to add creative merit to rap music but they are going about it all wrong. Rap is it's own thing. Rappers taint their art with these misguided analogies when what they should be doing is creating fresh, original takes on the art they love.

  • @AllenLWilliamsIIIAttorney

***** We will respectfully agree to disagree. I look at Rap as an acronym for Rhythm And Poetry. Perhaps some sub-genres of what you refer to as rap are contemporaneous as in "challenges" but much of it is well thought out and will impact either a reader of the written word or the listener. Most of what I refer to as RAP is not re-worked to apply to music. Listen to Gil Scott Heron but before you do that, read his poetry( perhaps Lincoln Press). His "Rap" started out only as his reading his poetry perhaps accompanied only by the beat of a drum ( He later transitioned to a full jazz trained band complete with piano, keyboards and full brass accompaniment) similar to the "beatniks" of the early 60's in Greenwich Village. They, from what I understand, often read their poetry to the beat of a drum. Similarly, in the late 60's one of the very first RAP groups was "The Last Poets". I invite you to listen to their album "On the Subway" released in 1970. Here are a couple of verses from the title track which was accompanied only by a solitary almost monotonous drum beat.
I dug the man digging on me
But the dude was hung up in a mass of confusion
    as to who i was
    He thought
    he was trying to see
but you see but you see
    me knowing me
black proud and determined to be free
    could plainly see my enemy
That my friend is both rap and poetry. I agree we are not apes but apes and humans are mammals. Similarly, there are differences in various poetry forms but when certain poetic traits are found in a writing or song, I call it poetry. True, not all life on earth are mammals but all mammals share certain inalienable traits. So, yes, certainly, some Country Music and Rock ( e.g. Layla) can be considered poetic and some forms of rap should not be considered poetic. Almost anything in art that utilizes our creativity as humans has exceptions. My claim is Gil Scott Heron, definitely, Biggie to Eminem to Kendrick Lamar, mostly, all set their thoughts to poetry and then in order to address their audience, found music to accompany their words. Classic Websters defined poetry, perhaps not classic but it's poetry.

If you were to compare pac to a poet it would be someone like langston hughes. a folk poet so to speak who wrote for the people and not the scholars. Title: "Seasons"
We say goodbye to Spring as the leaves begin to change. The cold settles in and I remember I've gone insane. I guess it must be that time of year; When Fall turns Summer into a frozen Winter rain. You wouldn't have known it and I'm sure these laugh lines don't show it. But once there was a child behind this old smile. Until just like that the snowfall came. But you never forget that feeling. It's like a long lost friend. We carry them in our hearts because even a lifetime couldn't keep us apart. It was only goodbye for a little while. Until we would meet again.. Auf' Weidersehen! Because true friendship never ends. It can take you right back to where this all began. Like the sound of a distant train. I can hear it calling my name. It's ready to take me home again. Tracks laid on miles of rugged terrain. Headed southbound across a descalite plane. The smoke bellowing from it's engine is the fog that has been clouding my brain.

Just watch how it has helped molding each community in America, and even in other places, such as France, Germany, Haiti, South Africa, et cetera. Poetic verse requires a verbal and grammatical rigour that 99% of rappers could never replicate. It's a totally different kettle of fish akin to comparing the paintings of Michelangelo to tags drawn on the side of bridges. Expression is a wonderful thing but without technical discipline it cannot truly be called art.

Rap lyrics did not begin as poetry and hardly used poetic techniques until Rakim came along and completely switched up the entire game. Since then rap lyrics have become more poetic but if they're at the point right now where we can wholeheartedly look at a rap verse and say it's poetry then I'm not sure. There's a difference between being poetic and being poetry. Rap is poetic but is it poetry? It's a grey area in my opinion and as someone who is a rapper but can also play devil's advocate and see both perspectives here, I'm not sure. :)

@SoLo1sTSBoi Rap is not a stronger form of communication than singing. They are both art forms on a equal plain. Just as much as a picture tells a thousand words so does every other form of art. Wether you choose to sing, rap, paint, etc. It's all telling a story and sending a message into the world. Art is life and life is art. They are all expressions of life that people gravitate too. The one you may prefer is your preference but none is greater than the other.

@ElixTeflonDon he can't mention EVERYBODY who EVER grabbed a mic and was poetic wit it. And, in my opinion (focus on the "my opinion" part 1st), i dnt think Jay copies, or needs ta copy ANYONE. oh yeah...and i, admittedly, dont know who was the 1st to say it, but i doubt Pac was the 1st ta utter those words. just appreciate genius, bruh

@1980venom Why isn't Jay-Z poetry? If you listen to he's debutalbum, you can hear lot's of poetry in the music. You doesn't have to be poor to be a poet. Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, Pete Rock, EPMD etc all did well in theire primetime, and they are considered poets. I ain't a Jigga-fan, but he do have som poetic content in his lyrics.

@SonnyA89 ....I feel you my brother. But don't insult lil-wayne's lyrical skill. The Carter III is a respectable album. Don't disagree, if you do disagree, listen to it carefully. Besides III and maybe II...And maybe 2 of his mixtapes, than yes, it is shit.

if poetry can be one word or a few then i think rap is considered poetry maybe you havent gone deep enough to the genre or maybe other people hated it and you started to agree with the fact that the people around you hated it so you had to or maybe you never really gave it a chance and bashed it rap is poetry there are many people who make it poetry nas, rakim, and many others you just havent gone deep enough and probably only listen to a handful of fake rappers in the game now

for me its all about demographics, Hip Hop had made a huge impact by the end of the 20th century thanks to its spirit and intelligence, Hip Hop once appealed to those who aspired to those qualities whereas now it goes for the dickhead dollar, it pains me cos HipHops message used to be black america saying 'we are more than the media tells us' and now it leans to the opposite, pac and biggie were great artists but their image only drafted in the worst kind of audience, same with 50 and all them

    I disagree.
    Hip-hop/Rap ,
    is a mathematical pattern.
It's being done on a specific timing.
    With poetry,
    there is no mathematical pattern.
    Words can be placed,
    anywhere you want them.
    It could be messy ,
& doesn't even have to rhyme.
    Math Hoffa ,
& the rest of the battle circuit,
    are poets,
    but Math can do both.
    However,
    his strength is in poetry.

      Do you understand ?
      They wouldn't be able
      to spit those accapella bars
      over a hip-hop beat,
      because it doesn't fit,
      inside the mathematical patterns.
      It has too many words.
Some add more wording to it,
      because the sentence
      doesn't make sense,
      & now it really doesn't fit .

Yeah, of course people aren’t putting free verse poetry in songs, because it’s arrhythmic and wouldn’t fit in a song format. Free verse isn’t the definition of petty though, it’s only a sub-genre.

  • @MrLexanderluther1986
    @MrLexanderluther1986 13 лет назад

smh..He just referenced Big Pimpin, in his explanation on wanting "Rap" to be taken seriously. All he had to do, is apologize in behalf of Lil Wayne, Kanye West's personality, and A LOT of today's stuff. And then simply say a few names: Lupe Fiasco, OutKast, Cee-Lo, Common, Eminem, Mos Def, Saul Williams, Brother Ali, Nas, K-Os, The Roots/Blackthought, Big KRIT, a whole SLEW of classic emcees, etc..and that would sum up his argument.

My dude u have to read and listen to the music and analyze in urban context(hip hop culture)
I'll even refer u to the newer school of hip hop artists
    Listen to a Kdot
    Or a Pusha T
    Or a Drake
    Or a Kanye
Or hell listen to some of Jay-Z's work, listen to American Gangster
If u can listen to American Gangster and not see the poetry in it
Either you just havent developed the listening skills for rap or..jus not lookin at it in the context of hip hop
