- In this episode I'm pleased to show you an incredibly cool piece of gear: an original vintage Fender blackface Vibroverb from 1965.
This amplifier has an adventurous past; I have to thank its latest owner, my friend Enrico Tozzini, who allowed me to intercept it just before it flew to a new home in Germany.
The blackface Vibroverb boasts a strong testimonial; in fact, the fortunes of this model dramatically changed when Stevie Ray Vaughan released his debut album “Texas Flood”. For that
studio sessions Vaughan used simultaneously 2 Vibroverb amps from late 1963.
The Vibroverb ended up as the most most sought after and valuable gem from the “blackface era” of the mid-1960’s.
As always we’ll start from the beginning and look at a comprehensive overview of this cherished model: from its introduction in early 1963 to the more recent reissue models of the 90's and 2000's.

I have one from Feb ‘64. Played it lots, hardly even look at it now. Best Blackface they ever made for what i do, and i’ve played through all the classic amps. I have a Cesar Diaz story, a few years before i got the amp i contacted Seymour Duncan to fix a couple of pickups in my 1960 Strat. His secretary informed me that he was too busy these days to do that, but that she would give me Cesar Diaz’s number and that they were forwarding business to him. I called him up, we chatted for a good hour. I sent the pickups to him, he fixed the leads on the bobbin, didn’t need rewinds. Still use the guitar with his work 33 years later. He was a funny guy.
Ciao Grogor1, thank you for getting in touch with your interesting comments and your nice anecdote. Please feel free to browse among the other content of the channel!
Great video. And thank you for the spoiler of the next video, it's a very interesting subject; can't wait!
Thank you Jay! I'm already at work : )
Oh, that Les Paul ❤️
Amazing video Bob.
I've had a 2004 vibroverb for a few years now, and still regret giving it away.
Much love
Grazie Antonio, much love right back! : )
Fantastic as always. Thanks for doing what you do Bob!
Thank you so much for your appreciation and encouraging feedback Ethical Drift!
Marvelous video, my first "real" amp was a Tremolux head with a 4x12 Vox cab...we were snotty schoolboy punky dance band I must say the Telecaster sounds really great through the 1×15. If I come across a 2x10 vibrolux I may just snagg it. The p90 les paul sounded perfect through the re-issue. Thanks for the great audio tour!!
Thank you so much for your kind feedback and nice words Giulio, I'm happy that you liked this episode! Please feel free to browse among the other content of the channel.
@@BobsToneReview Thanks for replying, I shall be happy to watch all the content.
Fantastic - as always! And thanks for highlighting the virtues of the Jensen C15N. I'd only add that the C15N Vintage Reissue is a 50W AES speaker, that is more than capable of handling the power of a 2x6L6 output stage as an AA763 or AB763 without ANY issue. So you can crank your amp at the volume you want (within reason!), without any residual risk of damaging the speaker. Play loud, play with confidence! :)
Thank you so much for the kind words and the necessary clarification! : )
...soul and sincerity too.

Oh snap! That accent man, I’m sold, subscribed…amazing. Where are you from?
Thank you for your appreciation Matt, great to have you onboard! I'm from Bari, Puglia, in the south of Italy : )
You know that Diaz put in a giant transformer to modify SRVs Vibroverb to make a much louder clean tone. They had trouble getting a speaker in around the tranny.
I see Steve, that's interesting! By the way, as I mentioned in the video, I'm not sure that it's a brilliant mod tonewise... I've tried a vintage Balackface Vibroverb with the "SRV Transformer" and I found that it pretty much alters the nature of the original tone, which is more creamy.

Grazie Carluccio! : )
In 8:12 and 11:22 you sound as Page in the first 2 LZ albums. I would have sware it was a Les Paul but it seems by your video it was a Tele (indeed the one that Jeff Beck gifted him). I am impressed ! You are not even using the bright switch. Please, which drive pedals were you using ?
Leonardo, thank you for such kind words and flattering feedback! The "secret" is that it's an original vintage Telecaster, you will find more info and details here:
ruclips.net/video/GzmtwMm3wos/видео.html
In fact, despite what many people may think, vintage Telecasters and vintage Les Pauls have much in common soundwise; That's why Jimmy Page smoothly switched from a Telecaster to a Les Paul. I've discussed this matter in this video:

As for the pedalboard, unfortunately I can't remember for sure... it's almost certainly my stage pedalboard:

The overdrive/distortion pedals are still the same.
@@BobsToneReview nice to meet you. Thank you for your kind reply.
@@leonardo.rafael great to have you onboard!
63 is a better vibroverb- you want blackface tones you go with 10 inch drivers preferably a super reverb. I think people like the "idea" of a 15 inch speaker (bigger is better right) but it gives harsh and clangy high end and "unsophisticated" mids.
Sempercompellis, I really don't know what Blackface Vibroverb you tried... I think that the video stands to demonstrate that this one (with original Jensen C15N Speaker) has one of the sweetest tones you could ever get out of a Fender amp. Most seem to agree as the Vibroverb is generally considered the most valuable Fender amp of the "blackface era".
@@BobsToneReview it is obviously personal preference- The 64 has the status it has because of rarity and SRV and we all know Cesar Diaz changed that amp considerably- I owned the vibroverb with the "splooge in your pants" JBL D-130 and it was a very harsh amp and my 68 super reverb blew it away in nearly every respect. I happen to love blackface circuits paired with 10" speakers. The 63 vibroverb was discontinued because the entire line was- it turned into the Vibrolux which is another masterpiece of an amp- the 64 vibroverb was discontinued because it didn't sell- like i said before; people like the IDEA of 15 inch speakers. The 15 inch speaker was there for power in the early days, once the transformers caught up, it quickly became a thing of the past because it doesn't sound very good.
@@sempercompellis of course I respect your opinion but I can't agree with you... I really love the C15N speaker, it's has a sweet tone, anything like harsh sounding. Also, as I say in the video, I don't think that the Diaz mods were an actual improvement tonewise but rather an improvement of the electrical performance and reliability of the amp.
Having said that, thank you for your attention in the video, great to have you on board!
