- In this video, i teardown a C-4 transmissions out of a 65 mustang to be resealed, i also wanted to check the clutches and bands and found 2nd gear band worn, other than that all was well. Thanks for watching
Your videos were my disassembly guide for both my 67 c4 coupe and my sons 89 fox a4ld mustangs. Quick and informative. Keep up the videos!
Great to hear, thanks for watching
Thanks for the great video Gary! Transmissions fascinate me and I want to learn how to rebuild them!
Ever worked on a transmission before?
Can you fit this transmission to a fox body? Do you have to do a lot of mods to fit it? Or it won't just fit a foxbody Mustang?
Not Really sure, haven't done this type of mod in a long time
Hi Gary...I have a 65 c4. I replaced the o-ring(square cut) around the pump a year ago. It is leaking again. I think the converter is draining back into the pan after it is parked for a day. Overfilling the pan and causing fluid to go up the channel that you only find in early c-4's to right behind the pump where it slips by the o ring. Does this sound right? Could it be that check ball in the pump housing that you blew air through that is allowing the fluid to drain back out of the converter? How do I better seal the pump housing to the case? Use some sort of sealant in combo with another square cut o-ring?
Is this a green dot valve body trans?
Thanks for another wonderful and informative video. Really appreciate you sharing your time and knowledge with us. Will we be seeing any reassemblies? Looking forward to your videos and thank you once again.

I will do my best, right now the shop is packed, but if I get a chance I will do that.
good job my friend
hey nothing personal but you should have more lights when ever you filming good angle but a bit dark other than that great job.
Yes i agree on that
repare una c4 en drive no da cambios. en manual solo tiene 1 y 2 alguna sugerencia
Would love to see the reassembly of the C4!
Hi Gary I have c4 early the car run ok one day the car have no reverse when engine warm up but engine cold is have the reverse you have any idea? What wrong with the transmission.
Forward is ok? how is the 2-3 shift?
Gary Ferraro hello Gary the forward is ok shift ok the only the engine warm up is don’t have reverse
@@tmmustang8238 He asked about the 2-3 shift.
Howard Johnson yes I found the problem the reverse seals is broken
@@tmmustang8238 You mean the rear servo piston or the front clutch seals?
What are the two Dewalt impact guns that you use? They seem to work well for you and I'd like to get those for work> Great Video.
show reassembly too
Watch the video in reverse. :)
Hello,
Is there an o-ring or gasket between the extension housing and the main unit? I have a leak either from where it meets or the servo. Replacing the o-ring on the servo cover this weekend.
Thanks!
Yes, there is an extension housing gasket
If have a c4 transmission with a 7 tooth drive gear, 3.73 rear, and 245/40/18 rear tires, what speedo gear do I need?
do you know if the speedo is to slow or to fast?
@@GaryFerraro I currently have a 20 tooth but it's 14 mph fast.
@@FilaMax7520 problem there is a 20 tooth, they don't make much higher, you would need one with more teeth so it would turn slower or one less on the drive gear but if you have 7 that is the lowest
@@GaryFerraro thank you, Sir.
quick question sir: nv-t350 98 dodge. can this unit be refreshed? synchros, bearings, and seals, bushings. getting very hard to find in salvage yards. thanks for your time.
Im sure it could, parts should be available. Havent done one of those in years, Alittle tuff to work on, i think everything stays in the main case
Quick question. Is replacing the reverse servo on a 69 Mustang C4 as simple as lowering the C4 enough to take out the rear servo and putting a new one in or is it more involved than that? Appreciate any info.
There is 4 bolts on the cover correct?
@@GaryFerraro I believe so. Took the cover off to replace the seal about a year ago and noticed the reverse servo's rubber was hard as a rock but can't take it out due to clearance and heard that I need to adjust the band if I replace the servo and just want to confirm one way or another if I need to adjust the band or just a quick swap. Thanks!
Is this slipping in reverse or any issue in reverse?
@@GaryFerraro Yes, after a drive and it's hot, it takes up to 15 seconds to engage reverse. Reverse is fine when cold.
Why would someone ever have you take it all the way down just for seals why not put in new clutches hell you gotta run it through the tank how much could they possibly be saving thanks for the video very good just like always
It was easy enough to do, but i was hoping to turn into an overhaul, but didnt really find that much wrong. I was checking for ring grooves, worn bushings, clutches but all looked good, didnt open valvebody or disassemble drums, its a very good wholesale account as well
should the forward piston square cut seal be very tight in the bottom of the drum? i got mine in snug but it doesn't rotate in bore. is this ok?
It may not rotate, when both seals are lip seals, the piston rotates fairly easy. Just make sure you get a good air check
Great video! May I ask how long you have been doing this? Very cool stuff to just watch.
Since the mid 80's
Gary, I am surprised you haven't monetized your videos. Your channel has a lot of traffic and could generate decent money to compensate for the time you spend editing and filming...
Audistyle I will soon, I love what I do and enjoy helping out when the questions come in.
Gary Ferraro I agree add commercials and get compensation from you tube they get paid for you so why not
Perfect guy
Easy to take apart but nobody addresses the drum alignment.
Drum Alignment for what?
@@GaryFerraro well. I'll do my best to explain. The drum has notches in it. Having trouble aligning the last clutch. You can't turn it to make a fit.
I'm assembling the transmission in a vertical position. Not horizontal.
@@jesse75 ok, you mean fitting the drum into the notches on the shell
@@GaryFerraro yes. Do you assemble the complete unit or can you do it individually ?
Again. I thank you for your comment.
I'm in the process of installing the pump.
@@jesse75 On the C4, i would install the 2 drums, front planet, ring gear and shell in one shot. Thats how i do it but one at a time works as well
