This is not in any order but I can't do a top three here's my top ten. Dragon quest 11 S- Honestly this game is just just amazing Xenoblade Chronicles 3- The combat is so deep and the storyline is just so good and Hey. I mean it was nominated for not only RPG of the year but game of the year too. Trials of Mana- Being someone who was pretty upset not being able to play Mana 2 back in the 90's, Square really made it up to everyone 2 decades later. I love this game. Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster- With all the added touches and final fantasy 6 being my favorite game of all time, how could this not be on the list. Persona 5-Its Persona, it's amazing, nuff said. Live A Live- Another game we got kind of screwed out of in the nineties. Just started playing this last year and honestly this game is so cool. Y's VIII:Lacrimosa of Dana-Such a fun game. BOTW-Like it or not Zelda is now basically a JPG and there's like an unlimited amount of stuff to do. I'm sure there's a bunch more. What I can think of tho atm.

Great list, I'm actually near the end of Xenoblade 3 and while 2 remains my favorite it's easy to see how much better "balanced" it is, story and gameplay wise
I just can't dig Xeno 3. I love Xeno 1 (beat twice), love Xeno 2 even more (despite excessive fanservice and gacha mechanics), but Xeno 3 is a game I could never beat. I'm 25h into the game and had to drop it several times through the months because I find the characters (and even worse, the bad leader guys in red armor) to be too goofy and childish, I can't take them seriously at all. All the drama they try to bring is quickly ruined by them. The bad performance, plain world map, and forgetable soundtrack doesn't help either. So far I think Xeno 2 is the best game in the series (still far from perfect, but good enough), and its combat system is the best so far too.
I absolutely love my switch 💗 The switch is hands down the best console for RPG gaming since the PS1. Octopath Traveler 1 and 2, Bravely Default 2, Triangle Strategy, Dragon Quest 11 are just a handful of the some I have had a blast with in the last couple years.
13S is an amazing game, the only problem I had with it was that I personally had a hard time playing it for more than an hour or two at a time. It's very story driven and with so many options I needed time off to contemplate everything that was going on. I got the platinum for the game too! It was fairly easy to get as well. The battle system was pretty fun too, it was pretty straightforward which was nice since I'm getting tired of games with overly complicated min maxing.
Just completed the main story of XC3, and started Future Redeemed, Yesterday. It was a tear jerking story for sure, and can't wait to see what the final dlc delivers on top of it all
Great list! A lot of variety and quite a few titles to check out! I’d probably add the Octopath Traveler series, which to me is phenomenal, as well as Live a Live.
love to see 13 sentinels on your list. such a sublime game for me, easily my number one. ive literally never experienced anything like it--not just in games but also entertainment media in general. such a unique way to tell a story, and it was impeccably written and crafted. i almost feel like playing 13 sentinels left a hole that ive been trying to fill with other games or books or movies lol, but nothing quite matches what 13 sentinels accomplishes. such an amazing game and totally unique way to experience a story
With the exception of Xeno and SMT5 I have played or have the PS4 counterparts to these releases and its pretty cool a lot of these cross into other platforms. This is a whos who of JRPG royalty in top form. It is really hard to make a top 10 best list and not include a number of other games too and you chose well. Great video man, thanks for this!
Another great list man! I would really like to see Persona 3 get a face lift and style of P5. P3 was the game that started the new direction and look that we know today. I remember P3 coming out quietly, at the time, when I was working at a game retail store. Once I got it I was instantly hooked.
Sadly, it didn’t make it to the top 10 list for reasons: - digital only game - the game didn’t aged well - the remake of p3p was a downgraded version than the OG version with loads of issues
Excellent list! Love how you put Valkyria Chronicles 4 in, always feel that gets overlooked. I sincerely hope they port over Valkyria Chronicles 3 to the west with a quality remaster. The only difference with my list would be Octopath Traveler 2 instead of 13 Sentinels. 13 Sentinels is a bit of a point of contention for me, I love the art, story, and music. The gameplay though just didn't work for me. Call me boring, but it would have landed better for me if it went with a more traditional battle system.
Great video my friend! I can’t agree with you more about how amazing 13 Sentinels wraps you up in its story. However, I think a lot of people stay away because they mistakenly think it’s am RTS battle system like Red Alert. It is a straight up turn based system in isometric view. But holy cow what a game
1. 13 Sentinels Aegis Rim: One of the best games I've ever played in my entire life Loved everything about it loved the cast and definitely love the kaiju battles. 2. Xenoblade Chronicles 3: It's like they took everything great from the first two games and put them together for this one honestly I love everyone Noah and Mio are just so precious. 3. Persona 5 Royal: I mean do I have to say anything It's freaking Persona 5 One of the best games ever and I'm so glad it's on Switch
Hard to choose a top 3, but for me it's Xenoblade 2, Dragon Quest XI and Persona 5 Royal. All of these were games that I found hard to put down and just wanted to keep playing until the end.

Characters saying DAMN plenty of times. An tragic backstory if an man and Mermaid. Villain almost took the entire world. An female martial artist looken too sexy. Etc... Huh. Seems there's something even adult players can enjoy.
I can’t complete a list sadly, I own a crap ton of RPGs on switch but I’ve only played 5 of them. The backlog is strong with this one. Lol. I honestly get stuck playing sandbox games or multiplayers like Monster Hunter Rise or Diablo III. Plus I did take a whole year break to play Yakuza. 🤣 Keep up the great content bro!
I’m missed out on most JRPGs when they were new so I’m loving being able to catch up on the switch and play any new ones. I’ve played P5R, SMTV, DQXI S, FE 3H. I have Nier Automata and I’m interested in the others on your list.
Man what a good list, while i am some what suprised that P5R isnt number 1 i also cant blame you since XBC3 is such an amazing game in every regard. While P5R was also my entrance way into the whole persona series and the smt series it was also the best JRPG i have ever played objectively talking about a package as a whole. But the XBC series is so special i played the first one on switch and the story blew my mind instantly got the 2nd and i finished the 2nd in 4 days with over 100 hours while i did that the 3rd got announced and my god did they deliver with that one. Currently enjoying Furture Redeemed and seeing how all the titles in this series come together is truly beautiful. Love that you are supporting the right games keep it up.

Good list. Hard to dispute those choices. I would put the Cold Steel series in there, if it were complete in the west. It’s a shame 1&2 didn’t get released over here. Luckily, I have them in PlayStation. It’s my all time favorite series.

I actually love this list of JRPG games man. Especially the Xenoblade series. It's just an incredible story from start to finish. Though I haven't bought the DLC yet, I will soon enough. Ys VIII is just as great, but I had a hard time choosing between YS 8 or 9, cause I think both games are great in my opinion. But, I see why Ys 8 is just an amazing game. A few other one that I played that are great ones are Octopath 1 and 2, Bravery Default 2, even FF games are just as good.

I agree with the games I have played on your list being on a top 10 Switch list, though there are a few I still need to play. Choosing a top 10 JRPG list with only one game per series is a hard one for me, but I will make an attempt at it. 01. A tie between SMT III: Nocturne HD Remaster and SMT V (maybe this is cheating, but I couldn't not have both of these games on my top 10 list. Nocturne is in a tie for my absolute favorite game of all time and SMT V is my third absolute favorite game of all time so they both need to be on here. Of course, SMT IV is my second absolute favorite game of all time and it really needs to be on the Switch as well. The Super Famicom versions of SMT I & II are also available on the Japanese version of Nintendo Switch Online, so maybe those deserve an honorable mention as well.) 02. Phantasy Star IV (This would have been in tie for #1 with Nocturne since it is my other absolute favorite game of all time, but I didn't want to have too many ties for #1.) 03. Persona 5 Royal 04. Ys VIII (I'm also just as fond of Ys IX as I am of Ys VIII, but the Switch port of Ys VIII runs much more smoothly than the Switch port of Ys IX.) 05. Undernauts: Labyrinth of Yomi 06. 13 Sentinels (One of the best Vanillaware games, now they really need to get Odin Sphere, Dragon's Crown, and Muramasa on the Switch.) 07. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 08. Live-A-Live 09. Bravely Default II 10. Fire Emblem: Three Houses There are a lot of great JRPGs on the Switch though, so listing only 10 of the best makes me feel like I'm leaving a lot of them out that deserve to be recognized. 😆 There are also a lot of great Western-style RPGs on the Switch, some I would recommend are: Planescape: Torment, Darkest Dungeon, Baldur's Gate I & II, Death's Gambit: Afterlife, Icewind Dale, Dark Souls Remastered, Vambrace: Cold Soul, Lovecraft's Untold Stories, Neverwinter Nights, Skyrim, The Witcher III, Divinity Original Sin II, and Fatal Labyrinth.
Man you put me onto Vambrace Cold Soul and I owe you so much for that. Truly a stellar top 10 list and it makes me feel guilty I didn't put SMT 3 nocturne as well. Also you have some on your list I still have to dive into! I also loved Ys 9 and CANNOT wait for 10! But yeah Undernaughts is genuinely one of my all time favorite dungeon crawlers. @@RawPower867 I can see that being a concern with some of the performance issues in the Switch version of Ys IX, but a big part of that was how the game was structured to load huge chunks of the city at once that caused the framerate issues. If Ys X is structured more like Ys VIII, then it will probably run fine on the Switch. Also, Falcom is now handling the Switch ports of Ys games in house and they had previously outsourced them, so they will probably be more vigilant about making sure the games run well on the Switch.
@@RawPower867 I really hope that Oath in Felghana comes out in the West and I'm concerned about that as well since there hasn't been an announcement of a Western release yet despite the Japanese release already being out. I could probably play through the game in Japanese because I've played it enough times and I do know a little Japanese, but I'd probably have a much better experience playing it in English. If it did get a Western release, it would instantly become one of the best games on the Switch in the West..
It's funny, because last year I played Persona 5 Royal for the first time (first Persona game ever) and then Xenoblade Chronicles 3 directly after (first Xenoblade game), and I felt immense regret for not getting into both series much sooner. Seeing them both make your top 3 gave me a warm fuzzy feeling of, "I did something right." lol. I'm not a big fan of turn-based JRPG games, but hell I'd be lying if I didn't say I enjoyed the hell out of Persona 5 Royal. I then proceeded to go backwards and finish Persona 4 Golden and Persona 3 Portable! xD
My favorites so far... 1. Dragon Quest 11 S 2. Persona 5 3. Ys 8 4. Tales of Symphonia (the Switch port's issues didn't hurt my enjoyment too much thankfully) 5. Trials of Mana I've got a big backlog to clear

SO many Switch JRPGs and so many of them are my favourite games of all time! So nice to see DQXI here since that's a BIG fav for me! I LOVE Atelier Ryza! The story was so wholesome and just some small town kids wanting adventure and it was a challenge to get used to the alchemy and the combat. The first game was a great intro and there’s so much in this game that you could easily pull 100 hours and still have goals you’d want to meet. It’s excellent. I really need to start the Sophie ones. Also Octopath Traveler 2 is up there with one of my most favorite game experiences EVER. And Harvestella is my vote for someone who is coming from life sim/farming life games and want to get into RPGs. The art style and the dungeons are much more mature than like Rune Factory.
I've been meaning to check out your channel, and I really liked this video, and I have either played some of these games or they are in my to play pile. Out of the ones I have played, I would put Persona 5 Royal as #1, but the Xenoblade games are still on my to play pile (too many of these games, and not enough time...). Out of curiosity, which version of Persona 3 did you play. Anyway, I will be sure to check out some of your other videos.

I'm currently playing Persona 5 Royal and it's the most artsy, goofy, adorable experience I've ever had in the genre! I bought SMT V too, even thought it seems a bit harder and the story is a bit darker, which I also like. I recently bought XC 3 but I'd like to know if you recommend newcomers to play any of the other two first? Thanks for your video!
Awesome list! I don't play games often on my Switch so I'm a bit behind regarding rpgs on it (looking at you Xenoblade Chronicles 1 and 2) so the only one that I can recommend for now is the same that I've recommended before the Mercenaries Saga Chronicles (first 3 games on the same cart)! I know they're Tactical RPGs but they're entry level with a good enough story to keep you wanting to finish the trilogy! I've added a bunch of Switch games to my collection lately so I'll have to start some them like Octopath Traveler 2 and Bravely Default 2! But my priority after I've completed Trails of Cold Steel quadrilogy (now in the middle of the 3rd one) will be to start Xenoblade as I've heard so many people hyping it up! So many great games! JRPGs on Switch is just so great... 13 Sentinels was a masterpiece. I personally found it to be maybe a tad too long, and maybe a little too confusing, especially towards the end. But overall, it was an absolute must play if you like sci-fi stories, and/or tactical top down gameplay.
For the Nintendo Switch ... Dragon Quest XI, Octopath Traveler II, and either Ys VIII or Ys IX. Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition is a very special game but it's almost too big and the overload of side quests, many which gatekeep you from key abilities or skills, is a tough pill to swallow. Great game but the grind with side quests and items is a legit issue. Keep up the great work !!

I literally decided to buy my Switch because SMT V had been announced. That was a wait. I like the game, but was disappointed in the story after SMT IV, and there were times I was disappointed in the graphics (I was playing on a gen 1 switch, so maybe it will look better on my oled). Great list! I've played seven of these so far: Ys VIII, SMT 5, Nier Automata, Dragon Quest XI, Persona 5, Xenoblade 3 and I'm currently working on 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim! I do want to play Fire Emblem Engage because I absolutely loved Three Houses. I've had a moderate interest in the Atelier series but I've always been put off by no english dub. I have played games with Japanese voice acting before but sometimes I zone out and miss something they said 😅
How would you rank those 7? Im currently playing dragonquest 11 and its my first true jrpg experience (minus pokemon shovel) and ive been loving the story, combat and basic design. What would you recomend me next get?
Taru! My top three jrpgs on the Switch, without taking Persona 5 into consideration (one of my favorites games) I would probably go with 13 Sentinels, Three houses, and Octopath traveler. Maybe dragon quest could make it to my top three but unfortunately, I haven't played it long enough to get a real feeling of the game.
Hard to disagree. Love seeing Valkyrie chronicles in here, truly great games. Just to be different here or maybe for a part two rune factory 4, triangle strategy, and Tokyo mirage sessions. Not a top 3 but definitely worth talking about

I loved this list. I'm actually starting Atelier Ryza myself. My top ten so far would have to be. 10. Disgaea 6 9. Rune factory 5 8. Final fantasy X/X-2 7. Super neptunia rpg 6. Moero chronicle hyper 5. Shining resonance refrain 4. Various daylife 3. Fire emblem three houses 2. Neo the world ends with you 1. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (xenoblade 3 is close but 2 is how I discovered the series)
i've personally liked the original Valkyria Chronicles much more then the part 4, it has almost the same graphics, same mechanics and the plot felt more... relatable mb... and darker... part 4 - group of youngsters merrily marching to war, fooling around and looking like school kids on a tourist trip (at least at first glance) part 1 - war catches everyone off guard and random ppl get dragged into the seemingly hopeless fight
I went and bought 13 Sentinels thanks to this video, I've never heard about it prior and I must say thank you. I just finished it, the story blew my mind and made me think on what actuality makes us human.
Agree completely on Xenoblade. That series is easily top of the list for me too; all 3 plus the DLC are must plays. I would probably have Persona 4 Golden, Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters, Octopath Traveler 2, FE Three Houses and Dragon Quest XI up there after that in the god tier of Switch JRPGs. I’m shocked that none of the 2D-HD games (Octopath, Triangle Strategy, Live a Live) made your top 10, they are all amazing. Octopath easily has my favorite turn-based system out there seamlessly blending the Bravely Default system with Persona and it has some of the best boss fights.
You liked dragon quest XI that much? Tbh it never appealed to me much but I'm running out of jrpgs to play. Is there much for... story, and character interaction?
@@jessefisher1809 DQXI is a great game. Easily the second best in the entire series behind VIII and definitely one of the greatest JRPGs on the Switch. I liked the story and characters of DQXI a lot aside from Sylvando who is a bit annoying. The game oozes charm and the story actually gets pretty dark at times.

I agree with the number one pick, I started the xenoblade series with 3 and damn was it good gameplay wise, music, oh boy it was perfect and the goty for me too.
I picked up a switch oled last spring, first console I've has since... I suppose xbox 360 was still a relevant console. I've always loved the story telling of jrpgs so it was an easy choice. The only problem I've run into is there are some stellar rpgs but they span across multiple games. Xenoblade 1-3 is on the shelf and I'm definitely going to play them but man.. it's like a two year commitment to play these games. So far I've loved octopath 1 and 2, astral chain, the world ends with you, and tales of vesperia but I absolutely adore Nier Automata and I am Setsuna. I'm just a sucker for a good story.
It's too hard to have only a top 3 JRPG from all the games I have played but if I were to limit it to just the Switch, I would say: 1. Bravely Default 2--One of the best turn-based JRPGs I've ever played; boss battles were like a game of chess where players need to plan 3-5 moves ahead because if you just blindly attack without a plan or strategy, you will get wiped out. Developed by SquareEnix so players familiar with Final Fantasy will be right at home; it's a FF game without being called one because the item and spell names are the same (Phoenix Down, Fire/Fira/Firaga, Meteor, Holy ,etc.). 2. Pokemon Legends Arceus--This game was very well done; I hadn't played a pokemon game since Ruby/Sapphire GBA days and coming back into series with this game was an awesome re-entry point. 3. Age of Calamity--I know there's going to be debate, controversy, etc. on this game being classified as a JRPG but based on the fact that there are character levels, weapon upgrades and the like, I say this game fits criteria. I pulled many late nighters when this first came out and when I heard about the DLC updates/expansions, I was reinvigorated to see what the new content had to offer and I was not disappointed; I daresay they exceeded my expectations.
Not sure if you can count Astral Chain as a JRPG, but since NieR Automata is I'm gonna assume that we can. For those who never got around to playing Astral Chain, the game is absolutely phenomenal.
You hit 13 sentinels on the money. Pretty awesome story. Any thoughts on Eiyuden Chronicle, I was a huge Suikoden fan and it would be awesome to circle back that game.
I would have liked to see a video that's all switch exclusives, but nonetheless a fantastic list of games. I have yet to play dq11s, but i played vanilla dq11 and it is hard to think of a better rpg that i have ever played. Tales of Arise comes close, but nothing has beaten dq11 for me.
I want see something like Valkeria chronicles but third person shooter style. Some these games are real good, thanks to my brother i got into us series 2 years ago.

I loved 3. I'm trying to get into the 1 for the like the 4th time, but I think I'm actually going to get through it this time.

I just can't dig Xeno 3. I love Xeno 1 (beat twice), love Xeno 2 even more (despite excessive fanservice and gacha mechanics), but Xeno 3 is a game I could never beat. I'm 25h into the game and had to drop it several times through the months because I find the characters (and even worse, the bad leader guys in red armor) to be too goofy and childish, I can't take them seriously at all. All the drama they try to bring is quickly ruined by them. The bad performance, plain world map, and forgetable soundtrack doesn't help either. So far I think Xeno 2 is the best game in the series (still far from perfect, but good enough), and its combat system is the best so far too.
Maybe switching to JP voices will help, I couldn't stand the english version in any of the games, especially with all the changes they made.@@TheOwwen

Octopath Traveler 1 and 2, Bravely Default 2, Triangle Strategy, Dragon Quest 11 are just a handful of the some I have had a blast with in the last couple years.
13S is an amazing game, the only problem I had with it was that I personally had a hard time playing it for more than an hour or two at a time. It's very story driven and with so many options I needed time off to contemplate everything that was going on. I got the platinum for the game too! It was fairly easy to get as well. The battle system was pretty fun too, it was pretty straightforward which was nice since I'm getting tired of games with overly complicated min maxing.

Just completed the main story of XC3, and started Future Redeemed, Yesterday. It was a tear jerking story for sure, and can't wait to see what the final dlc delivers on top of it all

love to see 13 sentinels on your list. such a sublime game for me, easily my number one. ive literally never experienced anything like it--not just in games but also entertainment media in general. such a unique way to tell a story, and it was impeccably written and crafted. i almost feel like playing 13 sentinels left a hole that ive been trying to fill with other games or books or movies lol, but nothing quite matches what 13 sentinels accomplishes. such an amazing game and totally unique way to experience a story

With the exception of Xeno and SMT5 I have played or have the PS4 counterparts to these releases and its pretty cool a lot of these cross into other platforms. This is a whos who of JRPG royalty in top form. It is really hard to make a top 10 best list and not include a number of other games too and you chose well. Great video man, thanks for this!

Another great list man! I would really like to see Persona 3 get a face lift and style of P5. P3 was the game that started the new direction and look that we know today. I remember P3 coming out quietly, at the time, when I was working at a game retail store. Once I got it I was instantly hooked.
Sadly, it didn’t make it to the top 10 list for reasons:
- digital only game
- the game didn’t aged well
- the remake of p3p was a downgraded version than the OG version with loads of issues

Excellent list! Love how you put Valkyria Chronicles 4 in, always feel that gets overlooked. I sincerely hope they port over Valkyria Chronicles 3 to the west with a quality remaster. The only difference with my list would be Octopath Traveler 2 instead of 13 Sentinels. 13 Sentinels is a bit of a point of contention for me, I love the art, story, and music. The gameplay though just didn't work for me. Call me boring, but it would have landed better for me if it went with a more traditional battle system.

13 sentinels is a sci fi story for the ages. It should be understood that it is half visual novel and half tactical rpg.

However, I think a lot of people stay away because they mistakenly think it’s am RTS battle system like Red Alert. It is a straight up turn based system in isometric view. But holy cow what a game
1. 13 Sentinels Aegis Rim: One of the best games I've ever played in my entire life Loved everything about it loved the cast and definitely love the kaiju battles.
2. Xenoblade Chronicles 3: It's like they took everything great from the first two games and put them together for this one honestly I love everyone Noah and Mio are just so precious.
3. Persona 5 Royal: I mean do I have to say anything It's freaking Persona 5 One of the best games ever and I'm so glad it's on Switch

Hard to choose a top 3, but for me it's Xenoblade 2, Dragon Quest XI and Persona 5 Royal. All of these were games that I found hard to put down and just wanted to keep playing until the end.
DQ doesn't deserve to be up there. Game feels looks and plays made for kids and grown ass adults that still have the mind of a kid in every sense

Seems there's something even adult players can enjoy.
I can’t complete a list sadly, I own a crap ton of RPGs on switch but I’ve only played 5 of them. The backlog is strong with this one. Lol.
I honestly get stuck playing sandbox games or multiplayers like Monster Hunter Rise or Diablo III. Plus I did take a whole year break to play Yakuza. 🤣

I’m missed out on most JRPGs when they were new so I’m loving being able to catch up on the switch and play any new ones. I’ve played P5R, SMTV, DQXI S, FE 3H. I have Nier Automata and I’m interested in the others on your list.

Man what a good list, while i am some what suprised that P5R isnt number 1 i also cant blame you since XBC3 is such an amazing game in every regard. While P5R was also my entrance way into the whole persona series and the smt series it was also the best JRPG i have ever played objectively talking about a package as a whole. But the XBC series is so special i played the first one on switch and the story blew my mind instantly got the 2nd and i finished the 2nd in 4 days with over 100 hours while i did that the 3rd got announced and my god did they deliver with that one. Currently enjoying Furture Redeemed and seeing how all the titles in this series come together is truly beautiful. Love that you are supporting the right games keep it up.

Good list. Hard to dispute those choices. I would put the Cold Steel series in there, if it were complete in the west. It’s a shame 1&2 didn’t get released over here. Luckily, I have them in PlayStation. It’s my all time favorite series.

@@Brandon667x1 yeah I didn't realize that I was still enthralled by the ps vita at the time before I realized that 😅. I was playing alot of dungeon crawlers on the system when I got the ultimate edition for 1 and 2 on ps vita. Did they have them the ps 4 too? The ultimate editions?

I actually love this list of JRPG games man. Especially the Xenoblade series. It's just an incredible story from start to finish. Though I haven't bought the DLC yet, I will soon enough. Ys VIII is just as great, but I had a hard time choosing between YS 8 or 9, cause I think both games are great in my opinion. But, I see why Ys 8 is just an amazing game. A few other one that I played that are great ones are Octopath 1 and 2, Bravery Default 2, even FF games are just as good.

I agree with the games I have played on your list being on a top 10 Switch list, though there are a few I still need to play. Choosing a top 10 JRPG list with only one game per series is a hard one for me, but I will make an attempt at it.
01. A tie between SMT III: Nocturne HD Remaster and SMT V (maybe this is cheating, but I couldn't not have both of these games on my top 10 list. Nocturne is in a tie for my absolute favorite game of all time and SMT V is my third absolute favorite game of all time so they both need to be on here. Of course, SMT IV is my second absolute favorite game of all time and it really needs to be on the Switch as well. The Super Famicom versions of SMT I & II are also available on the Japanese version of Nintendo Switch Online, so maybe those deserve an honorable mention as well.)
02. Phantasy Star IV (This would have been in tie for #1 with Nocturne since it is my other absolute favorite game of all time, but I didn't want to have too many ties for #1.)
03. Persona 5 Royal
04. Ys VIII (I'm also just as fond of Ys IX as I am of Ys VIII, but the Switch port of Ys VIII runs much more smoothly than the Switch port of Ys IX.)
05. Undernauts: Labyrinth of Yomi
06. 13 Sentinels (One of the best Vanillaware games, now they really need to get Odin Sphere, Dragon's Crown, and Muramasa on the Switch.)

There are a lot of great JRPGs on the Switch though, so listing only 10 of the best makes me feel like I'm leaving a lot of them out that deserve to be recognized. 😆
There are also a lot of great Western-style RPGs on the Switch, some I would recommend are: Planescape: Torment, Darkest Dungeon, Baldur's Gate I & II, Death's Gambit: Afterlife, Icewind Dale, Dark Souls Remastered, Vambrace: Cold Soul, Lovecraft's Untold Stories, Neverwinter Nights, Skyrim, The Witcher III, Divinity Original Sin II, and Fatal Labyrinth.
Man you put me onto Vambrace Cold Soul and I owe you so much for that. Truly a stellar top 10 list and it makes me feel guilty I didn't put SMT 3 nocturne as well. Also you have some on your list I still have to dive into! I also loved Ys 9 and CANNOT wait for 10! But yeah Undernaughts is genuinely one of my all time favorite dungeon crawlers. I'm worried about how Ys X will run on Switch
@@RawPower867 I can see that being a concern with some of the performance issues in the Switch version of Ys IX, but a big part of that was how the game was structured to load huge chunks of the city at once that caused the framerate issues. If Ys X is structured more like Ys VIII, then it will probably run fine on the Switch. Also, Falcom is now handling the Switch ports of Ys games in house and they had previously outsourced them, so they will probably be more vigilant about making sure the games run well on the Switch.
@@ophidianmind333 Hopefully you're right. I'm dying for more Ys on the Switch, and I'm not certain if Oath in Felghana will come to the West.
@@RawPower867 I really hope that Oath in Felghana comes out in the West and I'm concerned about that as well since there hasn't been an announcement of a Western release yet despite the Japanese release already being out. I could probably play through the game in Japanese because I've played it enough times and I do know a little Japanese, but I'd probably have a much better experience playing it in English. If it did get a Western release, it would instantly become one of the best games on the Switch in the West..
It's funny, because last year I played Persona 5 Royal for the first time (first Persona game ever) and then Xenoblade Chronicles 3 directly after (first Xenoblade game), and I felt immense regret for not getting into both series much sooner. Seeing them both make your top 3 gave me a warm fuzzy feeling of, "I did something right." lol. I'm not a big fan of turn-based JRPG games, but hell I'd be lying if I didn't say I enjoyed the hell out of Persona 5 Royal. I then proceeded to go backwards and finish Persona 4 Golden and Persona 3 Portable! xD

i don't play RPG as often anymore, but as of now my the top 3 RPG's are Shin Megami Tensei 4, Persona 5 and Dragon Quest 11.
I LOVE Atelier Ryza! The story was so wholesome and just some small town kids wanting adventure and it was a challenge to get used to the alchemy and the combat. The first game was a great intro and there’s so much in this game that you could easily pull 100 hours and still have goals you’d want to meet. It’s excellent. I really need to start the Sophie ones. Also Octopath Traveler 2 is up there with one of my most favorite game experiences EVER.
And Harvestella is my vote for someone who is coming from life sim/farming life games and want to get into RPGs. The art style and the dungeons are much more mature than like Rune Factory.
I've been meaning to check out your channel, and I really liked this video, and I have either played some of these games or they are in my to play pile. Out of the ones I have played, I would put Persona 5 Royal as #1, but the Xenoblade games are still on my to play pile (too many of these games, and not enough time...). Out of curiosity, which version of Persona 3 did you play. Anyway, I will be sure to check out some of your other videos.

Awesome list! I don't play games often on my Switch so I'm a bit behind regarding rpgs on it (looking at you Xenoblade Chronicles 1 and 2) so the only one that I can recommend for now is the same that I've recommended before the Mercenaries Saga Chronicles (first 3 games on the same cart)! I know they're Tactical RPGs but they're entry level with a good enough story to keep you wanting to finish the trilogy! I've added a bunch of Switch games to my collection lately so I'll have to start some them like Octopath Traveler 2 and Bravely Default 2! But my priority after I've completed Trails of Cold Steel quadrilogy (now in the middle of the 3rd one) will be to start Xenoblade as I've heard so many people hyping it up! 13 Sentinels was a masterpiece. I personally found it to be maybe a tad too long, and maybe a little too confusing, especially towards the end. But overall, it was an absolute must play if you like sci-fi stories, and/or tactical top down gameplay.
For the Nintendo Switch ... Dragon Quest XI, Octopath Traveler II, and either Ys VIII or Ys IX. Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition is a very special game but it's almost too big and the overload of side quests, many which gatekeep you from key abilities or skills, is a tough pill to swallow. Great game but the grind with side quests and items is a legit issue. Keep up the great work !!

I literally decided to buy my Switch because SMT V had been announced. That was a wait. I like the game, but was disappointed in the story after SMT IV, and there were times I was disappointed in the graphics (I was playing on a gen 1 switch, so maybe it will look better on my oled). Nice list, thanks for the video. I'll have to go back and replay some of these games.

Great list! I've played seven of these so far: Ys VIII, SMT 5, Nier Automata, Dragon Quest XI, Persona 5, Xenoblade 3 and I'm currently working on 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim! I do want to play Fire Emblem Engage because I absolutely loved Three Houses.
I've had a moderate interest in the Atelier series but I've always been put off by no english dub. I have played games with Japanese voice acting before but sometimes I zone out and miss something they said 😅

Taru! My top three jrpgs on the Switch, without taking Persona 5 into consideration (one of my favorites games) I would probably go with 13 Sentinels, Three houses, and Octopath traveler. Maybe dragon quest could make it to my top three but unfortunately, I haven't played it long enough to get a real feeling of the game.

i've personally liked the original Valkyria Chronicles much more then the part 4, it has almost the same graphics, same mechanics and the plot felt more... relatable mb... and darker...
part 4 - group of youngsters merrily marching to war, fooling around and looking like school kids on a tourist trip (at least at first glance)
part 1 - war catches everyone off guard and random ppl get dragged into the seemingly hopeless fight

I went and bought 13 Sentinels thanks to this video, I've never heard about it prior and I must say thank you. I just finished it, the story blew my mind and made me think on what actuality makes us human.

Agree completely on Xenoblade. That series is easily top of the list for me too; all 3 plus the DLC are must plays. I would probably have Persona 4 Golden, Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters, Octopath Traveler 2, FE Three Houses and Dragon Quest XI up there after that in the god tier of Switch JRPGs. I’m shocked that none of the 2D-HD games (Octopath, Triangle Strategy, Live a Live) made your top 10, they are all amazing. Octopath easily has my favorite turn-based system out there seamlessly blending the Bravely Default system with Persona and it has some of the best boss fights.
You liked dragon quest XI that much? Tbh it never appealed to me much but I'm running out of jrpgs to play. Is there much for... story, and character interaction?
@@jessefisher1809 DQXI is a great game. Easily the second best in the entire series behind VIII and definitely one of the greatest JRPGs on the Switch. I liked the story and characters of DQXI a lot aside from Sylvando who is a bit annoying. The game oozes charm and the story actually gets pretty dark at times.
I absolutely love the variety! There is literally something for everyone on this list! Sega Love represent! #BlueLions4Life ! Still a shame I haven’t got to SMT5 yet! Definitely gotta change that! I’m thoroughly convinced this video was tailored for me! DragonQuest, Ys. SMT, Valkyria, Persona and so much more!!! Love it dude! No way am I arguing this list! Such a stellar list! Some of the absolute best entries in all of their respective series! Homerun brother! Homerun!!

I agree with the number one pick, I started the xenoblade series with 3 and damn was it good gameplay wise, music, oh boy it was perfect and the goty for me too.

I picked up a switch oled last spring, first console I've has since... I suppose xbox 360 was still a relevant console. I've always loved the story telling of jrpgs so it was an easy choice. The only problem I've run into is there are some stellar rpgs but they span across multiple games. Xenoblade 1-3 is on the shelf and I'm definitely going to play them but man.. it's like a two year commitment to play these games.
So far I've loved octopath 1 and 2, astral chain, the world ends with you, and tales of vesperia but I absolutely adore Nier Automata and I am Setsuna. I'm just a sucker for a good story.
When you look over at your Switch collection and go, "Yep, got that one, got that one, got that one..."

It's too hard to have only a top 3 JRPG from all the games I have played but if I were to limit it to just the Switch, I would say:
1. Bravely Default 2--One of the best turn-based JRPGs I've ever played; boss battles were like a game of chess where players need to plan 3-5 moves ahead because if you just blindly attack without a plan or strategy, you will get wiped out. Developed by SquareEnix so players familiar with Final Fantasy will be right at home; it's a FF game without being called one because the item and spell names are the same (Phoenix Down, Fire/Fira/Firaga, Meteor, Holy ,etc.).
2. Pokemon Legends Arceus--This game was very well done; I hadn't played a pokemon game since Ruby/Sapphire GBA days and coming back into series with this game was an awesome re-entry point.
3. Age of Calamity--I know there's going to be debate, controversy, etc. on this game being classified as a JRPG but based on the fact that there are character levels, weapon upgrades and the like, I say this game fits criteria. I pulled many late nighters when this first came out and when I heard about the DLC updates/expansions, I was reinvigorated to see what the new content had to offer and I was not disappointed; I daresay they exceeded my expectations.

Octopath 2 is my favorite jrpg on the switch, but every pick here is solid anyway.
Not sure if you can count Astral Chain as a JRPG, but since NieR Automata is I'm gonna assume that we can.
For those who never got around to playing Astral Chain, the game is absolutely phenomenal.
You hit 13 sentinels on the money. Pretty awesome story. Any thoughts on Eiyuden Chronicle, I was a huge Suikoden fan and it would be awesome to circle back that game.
I would have liked to see a video that's all switch exclusives, but nonetheless a fantastic list of games. I have yet to play dq11s, but i played vanilla dq11 and it is hard to think of a better rpg that i have ever played. Tales of Arise comes close, but nothing has beaten dq11 for me.
I want see something like Valkeria chronicles but third person shooter style. Some these games are real good, thanks to my brother i got into us series 2 years ago.
