I've had a huge soft spot for the V8 R8 manual for years and years...it's one of the all-time great V8s, wonderful gated manual, it's a styling classic but also a livable modern car. It may be a wee bit "slow" by supercar standards but I think it's actually the right amount of fast for real roads vs. today's insane supercars. I'm all about it!

Yes mat. Also go and watch my Audi A3 video to see what I’m like doing a review of an Audi of this era. Anyway, loving the content you’re pushing out during lockdown. Keep up the good work.
They have some bullshit mechanical fault w their aircon its a simple part that costs about £40 however to replace that part the whole fucking engine and gearbox have to be dropped out the car which costs 6grand..
The r8 looked so good when it was first released that they could only make it worse. The new cars don’t look bad but they traded elegance for aggressiveness.
In 2009 my sister got married and I hired this car for a whole week (Asian thing to hire cars at weddings), anyway that week was the best week of my life! Ive driven other supercars since but nothing will compare to an r8 manual. Brilliant car!
Wait, so you hired the car for her? Or is it really a thing to get yourself something nice to drive around in just to celebrate someone else's good fortune? That's a very odd tradition since it seems nothing at all is benefitting the subject of the celebration, but whatever. Far be it from me to judge.
I just spotted, when you’re standing at the driver’s side of the R8 towards the end of the video, that the driver’s side front vented brake disk is the wrong one, and is actually for the passenger’s side... I looked back, and the passenger’s side front vented brake disc is correct... the vents are directional. Whoever changed them last, put 2x passenger side vented brake discs on the front of the R8 in error. 🤓

Had one and blew a engine at just 6 months old in 2008 on the track(timing chain failed big).Audi was the best and so good at looking after me I bought another 2 variants over the next 4 years Moved onto Porsche since but your review Matt is spot on in regards to the drive and design of the classic R8.
I used to own one of these beauties. Was one of the best cars I've owned by far. A couple of recommendations for anyone looking to buy one- avoid the R-Tronic single clutch auto box. It was clunky and mine had an expensive failure. And go for an aftermarket exhaust- this engine with a Capristo or Tubi is one of the better V8 engine sounds out there.
I don't care if its old, not as fast or anything. I saw this car on the streets in Germany when I was around 4 years old and I absolutely fell in love. Our neighbour had one and everytime he would come to park I would just keep staring at its beauty.
I have the same age rs4 with a very similar engine. I agree when you say it’s all you need on uk roads, you can have some fun without doing 100mph plus. I drove plenty of r8’s whilst working for audi and I still think that old manual v8 is the best all rounder, the newer v10 plus is too quick for our roads (different on a track but who buys one just for the track?). The carbon clean makes a huge difference as much as 50bhp as I found out when doing mine. Great video as always matt.
Drove one for the first time yesterday and my thoughts exactly when you said you do not need anything more than this on the road today.....oh, and it's not old at 13 years if you are a normal human
Mat, the original R8 is timeless and is an absolute pleasure to drive and own, can get pricey to insure and maintain and stuff but was well worth it for me back in the day. Edit: Had an original V10 manual but the V8 is arguably a better driver's car, doesn't sound as good of course but makes for a better balance on twisty roads because that V10 is a tiny bit overpowered on some roads. The side-blade is the only thing that put me off the car.I did see a white convertible with the lid down once and it looked better than most of the other supercar soft tops on the road!Phenomenal!
I have so many thoughts about this car. if I had to pick a car to drive every day that wasn't a supercar I'd pick a BMW 1 Series m. If I had to pick a hypercar I would pick in the McLaren P1. But in the super car category : first gen Audi R8 V8. Gated. Let's say 2014-2015. In my opinion, is the perfect supercar. Daily driveable. Comfortable when you need it to be fast when you want it to be. Beautiful but not screaming "look at me!!!!!!!!!!" like a Lamborghini. To this day, it's the supercar that I want. The only super car I wanted anywhere near as much is the 720s. This will be a future classic the manuals are already more expensive. And yes the first generation looks better than the current. Especially, to my eye, the 2014 model. there's no way I can pull up on one of those and feel like I'm being left behind.
Like most ppl, caviar taste but money for fish and chips !!!. The price of the parts puts me off. Im happy with my Porker.. loads of grunt for uk roads. Great upload Matt.
It's definitely a car to buy, especially nowadays when manual high displacement engines are pretty much gone. Not to mention that everything is turbocharged and does not compare to the sound of this engine. The manual V10 is one I would love to drive once in my life.

Darn, perfect timing as I am shopping for one right now! Thanks for the video Mat!
This r8 maybe not depreciate a lot than v10 versions.Because is v8 and this is the only generation of r8 that having v8 engine. And maybe the 4.2 liter audi v8 is quite famous for tuning.Well you can comments if I wrong.

V8 + gated manual = best combo
Definitely better looking than the new one!
It looks like it could have rolled off the production line yesterday. Amazing piece of design
It's going to be a classic.
The side-blade is the only thing that put me off the car.I did see a white convertible with the lid down once and it looked better than most of the other supercar soft tops on the road!Phenomenal!
Yeah Matt - Just go for it - I'm kinda surprised you don't already have one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This r8 still looks good, better than the new one
this guy never stops selling stuff!!!
Like most ppl, caviar taste but money for fish and chips !!!. The price of the parts puts me off. Im happy with my Porker.. loads of grunt for uk roads. Great upload Matt.
U need to get one. Especially the most important thing about it ITS A BLOODY MANUAL
I really love how this looks
I just purchased a 4.2 V8 S5 and what an engine. I agree with Matt, you really don't need more power on UK roads.
Friends of mine bought one each. Clutch was going on one of the them and he had to sell the car for £5000 rather than have the engine taken out.
It's definitely a car to buy, especially nowadays when manual high displacement engines are pretty much gone. Not to mention that everything is turbocharged and does not compare to the sound of this engine. The manual V10 is one I would love to drive once in my life.
Just got myself one! Collect it next week, can’t wait!!
My mate had a 2008 one last year and threw it in a ditch, and wrote it off! He let me have a go before he binned it, and it was awesome. Automatic with paddle shift on the wheel, nice :)
I have a mk 1 TT I still drive on the weekends; as much as I enjoy it, I would love to upgrade to the original R8! Maybe someday soon….
