I watched this when I was 11 years old in 1987. I had been a huge Beatles fan since 1982. I'm an even bigger fan now.

I recorded this on videotape back when it originally aired. I probably watched it 50 times, until I accidentally taped over it. I wish this would get a digital release. Great documentary!

UPDATE: Ordered a DVD copy of this from www.thevideobeat.com/music-documentaries/20-years-ago-today.html. It hasn't arrived yet, but the site gets good reviews. Super excited to watch this from beginning to end for the first time since the 80's!

I have this on VHS somewhere, taped it off of PBS when it aired back then. One of my favorite documentaries, or whatever you want to call it. Cool stuff. My copy isn't in good shape anymore like this one is.

Ringo looks a tad stoned when arriving at Abbey Road. This is my favorite period for the band - late 1966, between their spectacular Revolver LP and moving into Sgt. Pepper. This is they psychedelic heyday of the Fab Four.

I would love to have this on DVD or Bluray. It is an excellent documentary and really caught a sense of the time Sgt. Pepper's was recorded. I imagine it would be very difficult to get this documentary cleaned up and reissued.

+john moody Hi John, I have spent many years hoping this documentary would get a DVD release, and have contacted PBS about it, and it seems to have disappeared without a trace. I really hope that it wouldn't bother you to respond or contact me, in letting me know where I can purchase a DVD, or would you please make me a copy? Keep in touch.

Nah. Mr. Ginsberg was simpliflying things as I heard was his custom. Nobody should ask _this_ particular person to do any reality based interpretations of anything, because (I'm am really sorry for having to say this, my appologies go to anyone from the Ginsberg family), Mr. Ginsberg and reality lived in different planets. So no, whenever things don't fit Mr. Ginsberg socialist rethoric, it doesn't mean we've been interpreting The Beatles wrongly all this time. No. Anyone knows the phrase "boys will be boys"? A timeless truth indeed, to which I dare to draw a parallel now: Lefties will be Lefties. Rest In Pease, Mr. Ginsberg. You were wrong while alive, but you can't be wrong anymore. May The LORD bless your family.

10:40 Ringo was for sure toking a giant spliff in the car on the way over to the studio haha. I've always loved the press footage of them arriving individually to this particular recording session. Ironically funny that the big question of the time was "Are The Beatles Over?" when meanwhile they're heading in the front door of EMI to work on their greatest achievement yet.

I also VCR'd this when PBS first aired it--without telethon interruptions! I fished it out a few years ago to burn it to DVD but the VCR broke the tape on rewind. Not the VCR's fault: I used a cheap Polaroid tape back in '87 and was lucky it lasted as long as it did.
Noticed Janis Ian doing "Society's Child" is missing, it originally came on after the Rolling Stones 2000 clip.
And what the draft resister said is so true about people being stuck in their time periods. I was born in 1967 to a father who was stuck in 1956. And he stayed stuck in 1956 until he passed away in 2011. As for myself, more than one person has told me I'm stuck in 1980s/90s....and they're right!

I remember the first articles in the papers the day directly after this broadcast that the cd edition sales of Sgt. Pepper's had skyrocketed. I had the vinyl just a year then and although being an avid Beatles fan already before this broadcast, it somehow refrained me from buying the cd then.....in a way, I did not want to be a cattle figure like the public did: I wanted to buy the cd because of the music, not for forgotten memories -> which I did not have, I had a sort of backward generation gap in the 1980's: I completely disliked the synthpop of the charts then and the sixties brought a big excitement in music and youth culture for me that the eighties imo were lacking. I bought the cd a few years later anyway. And to this day, I still love music where guitar plays the prime role.
