The HEA Sabertooth Flipper Comb: The Full Nick Shabazz Review

- Today, I review a weird product. It's an EDC comb, in S35VN, with an action that would make this the envy of any knifemaker. Yet, it's not a stellar comb, with a huge pocket pecker, a poor clip, and a $199 price tag.
So, this comb shows that HEADesigns is gonna be a company to watch, and I'm eagerly anticipating the knife version of this design (provided it's made just as nicely), but I'm not quite sure that the Sabertooth is going to comb up a winner for you. Хобби
If my hair hadn't decided to make a tactical retreat from my forehead, this would be really compelling.
Mine's still at "Strategy", but it's going to retreat soon!

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
combpelling
Nick Shabazz how would this be as a beard comb???
You did a spectral analysis of the sound produced by a folding comb. You sir, are my kind of nerd.
I'm glad you enjoyed!
I just watched a bloody comb review......What in the actual fuck am I doing with my life?
fun drinking game, take a shot every time nick calls it a knife.
i'm already dead.
+CSLFiero I call watches knives. I have a problem.
knives fix problems, not cause them. ask oj simpson.
+Nick Shabazz I also laugh out loud every time you confuse the Rat 1 and Rat 2. Never gets old!
Drinking game:
Take a shot every time he opens the comb.
I lost it when you said it was made out of S35vn steel lmao.
Twisted Melody I found this comment right after i choked because of the S35VN Steel Lmao
I appreciate any item that makes the Hollywood *sching!* sound effect when deployed.
The spectrogram made me very happy - I'm not an audio guy, but I enjoy technical fun like that. Your reviews are a bright spot during the quarantine.
A spectrogram on a comb??? This is exactly the kind of deep dive I live for 👍
how's the "comb centering" lol
haha I would also like to know!
It's tine :D
good one lol
"you can go forever without sharpening this comb" god i died
Nick I'm a linguistics student so I laughed so hard when you whipped out the spectrogram 😂 love it!
I think, with this video review, we have reached peak RUclips. Tremendous work, Mr. Shabazz..
Can we a spectrogram of your favorite Gems? Maybe there is an optimal frequency of your Gems.
Andrew Ridings that would be an interesting investigation.
"The Acoustic Correlates of Gem Status in Pocketknives" by the Shabazz Gemological Institute
That sounds like a great doctoral dissertation. Let me know when you get it published.
I would pay money to sit in on that dissertation defense.
I just love how it sings every time you open it! :)
Your horrible puns always make me laugh. Keep up the good work.
Finally, a comb my hair might not destroy during its first use :3 Love the sound too.
The spectrograph amused me with my line of work :) stay awesome🎩
Great review Nick!
I actually googled it, thinking i would by it so i can comb my stache and beard. I thought i would have to pay around 30-40-50 bucks, but damn $200!!! That sucks! Over my dead body...
HolyCrapAA yea I know,I was going to buy one for the novelty .I know the quality is great but it's not worth it to me at all
Will we be seeing the equilibrium on your channel as well? Great review!
your two worlds of "knife guy", and "sound guy" combining into your greatest nerding out moment of all time pleased me very much.
I knew instantly as soon as I saw the color scheme that WE played some role in this haha
"cranial puncture " Can't stop giggling about that one. Nice vid as always.
hey... Nick, can make a followup for the KME Knife Sharpening System and how can get that mirror edge, thanks.
"Pocket Pecker ..., Little Angry Pigeon" AWESOmE analogy 👍👍 👏👏 Nice review, seriously. I would like to try one of these as a beard comb (concerned the blade might be on the short side ...?).
You gave me Signals and Systems war flashbacks in a knife review of a comb. Just gonna go sit in a corner now and play with sharp things until I can reevaluate my life.
Will my Dapper Dan pomade keep this well lubricated ?
that flip-out sound is incredible.
I have long hair (usually kept in a pony-tail) - is there a brush version of this product?
You should check out the folding knife that complements this the Equilibrium. It's a little out there too but it's very well made and lightweight for its large size. Plus the handle is long enough so that the pocket pecker is typically out of the way.
'A well made silly object' Nick you're a genius.
Oh man, Nick when you did the pecking thing I had a revelation. That comb was designed with the trash dove in mind!
I am literally laughing so hard I'm tearing up... great review!!! 😂😂😂
@Nick Shabazz, will there be a dissembly and maintenance video haha?
Hoping to see you review the antidote or the poison. The actual knife version at only 50 bucks more than the comb is very tempting.
hahahahahhaha "WE know that there are companies out there that love to do these contrasting anodizations". Subtle hint hahahaha
I like how he said he didn't like the colors, " I wish they would have gone with blue and purple or something like that."
Does anyone know where I could read nicks thesis? I’d be interested in giving it a read
spectrograms, armpit hair, and cranial punctures, this review has everything!
do you have the HEA Equilibrium review on the way?
Sounds amazing. 😃
I love the sound it makes when he flicks it open
Aaaaannd he just mentioned it
lol, see what you did there 😂 I thought WE would never know who made it when I saw it.
I need this for my beard. This is awesome.
hmm i think it may have microtech beat as their's is only marketed as a tactical beard comb. it also has the tuning fork pitch upon deployment which is un-tactical? is that a word?
some flash hiders for ar-15's of the 3 prong variety also make the tuning fork sound which bothers some. the smith vortex and aac blackout (not as bad as the vortex) are some examples of that. fossa went to a thicker bottom prong supposedly to reduce or eliminate the sound. i have no experience with the be meyer one. they are fantastic flash hiders though
Is the s35vn heat treated and if so @ what rockwell?
I forget to check the HRC on this little guy. I have failed you.
I came back to this review because I just got an Elixir and I'd love to carry this as a companion if I could find one.
You know it's good when the graphs come out!!! lol
Your channel has officially jumped the shark.
I keep thinking that, but here I am.
Damn I would like that as a knife comb combo pack
Hello nick, is there anything in the $300 range that has a great action? That just falls when you unlock it. I love the norseman but it's not up for pre order and that's the only knife that I would go past my $300 limit for.
+760rudogg North Arm Skaha
Nick Shabazz thanks Nick! Love your videos! Keep up the great work.
The harmonics when it flips open ... 👍
Is it S35VN in case the buyer wants to turn it into a terrible barbecue comb or pastry notcher or something?
The best thing about it is the sound it makes when it opens
all I see now is a pigeon..... yellow eye, tab beak, clip wing..... I cannot unsee it
I laughed so many times throughout
I need one of these. I'm in bad need of a comb
If the teeth on that comb are anything like the teeth on the bali-comb I have (which makes a similar ring-y. bell-like noise), which are not rounded/smooth at the ends at all, you probably wouldn't want to comb your hair with it even without that flipper tab. The bali-comb, however, still serves its main purpose as a trainer.
How does the comb part actually feel against the scalp? It doesn't look that comfortable. I've never found a metal comb I liked. If you're into reviewing edc combs you should check out chicago comb company's carbon fiber combs. Their titaniums are uncomfortable against the scalp
Does anybody know where i can buy that awsome comb?
Blade HQ
I love that both times you brought up the factory, you used the word "we" at what seems very subtly. If you did that on purpose to say WE knives made this comb, I would agree with that, it has a very WE Knives look to it.
I have no idea what you're talking about. But now that you bring it up for the very first time completely unprompted, it seems very likely based on parts, action, build, cost, etc. I just wish he'd confirmed it beyond "foreign sources", it'd be interesting to know, and would reflect well on WE.
A front flipper knife version of this would be sweet. with an improved clip of course
This is a perfect example of the word "TACTICAL" .
id like to see the microtech comb review
that was a good one. made laugh, although I can't blame anyone from buying/owning one. I do have balisong/comb.
$200 damn it's that damn s35vn lol why would you ever need this? But then again if I was filthy rich I might buy this lol
Nick I'm very interested in your actual job! it sounds interesting!
I don't know what to say anymore.
Will there be no end to the escalation in the EDC arms race.
Spinny tops. Murder-inclined "bottle openers," impaler pens, titanium and super steel combs, on and on we go.
Make it from titanium, throw some ano on it.
STARSCREAMM!!!
This. Is awesome.
my beard yearns for one!
The Angry Pidgeon...once you see it you can't unsee it
HereInTheLionsDen, an angry pocket pecked too.
Those are some serious serations!
Fabulous
I'm fairly certain that color is called octarine.
The sound the tines make after being deployed is amazing. $200 though?
I know, $200 for a foreign-made flipper comb seems really, really steep.
Well, if you were cornered in an alley and whipped this sucker out, your antagonists might just laugh themselves to death. If not, you could start madly coifing away on the ringleader, and win some new friends with your stylistic skillz.
slidetek 🤣
slidetek XD
With that flipper tab, it's plausibly a "self defense comb".
It would be fun to send to Nathan at Spadeknifeworks for sharpening lol .
Dat, edge retention!
So where are the reviews of his other designs?
the mids were awesome
I think they make it in a bladed version, you, know, an actual knife. It was on massdrop some time ago
However i might be wrong on that
I've got a feeling that none of the designers in HEA have hair or have used a comb in their life. I find it hard to believe nobody picked up on the flaw of the flipper tab before okaying it into production.
Anyone remember those 1950's fonzie switch blade combs? Surprisingly, they were actually useful at being a comb as well as a novelty item and you can still get one with change from $5. As much as I hate this trend of ridiculously over-engineering edc items, I just imagined a ProTech Godfather Comb.... now, that'd be one helluva comb.
crthebigo I have one of these dumb things and it’s a shit comb
Serrated?
If disassembly voids the warranty on a knife (or knife-like object), I tend to want no part in it.
My wallet says no. But my beard says yes.
As someone who has thick, curly, thick hair, I need this
shwing
Hey nick would you be interested in selling this piece?
every time i hear it open I think of a sword fight.
The sound of S35VN...
It got real when the graph came out.
This made me think of that one family guy episode.
idk why, but whenever I look at a HEA design knife, it reminds me of WE knives
They're very opaque about their manufacturing partners, but that could easily be the case.
Sooner or later we knives is going to make every brand out there lol
His accent though 😂
It's cool looking an has great action but it wouldn't do me any good, no hair!
This would have been great back in the 80s wen we all had hair and were combing it all the time. This would have been cool
A comb that sounds like a killer when you flip it open. Cool, but they should have used a different material for the comb. Would have been cheaper and more accessible for people.
😂i bought a Stinger Tools Utility Blade Comb for my Hawk Shortcut 😅
My God... it really is an angry pigeon!
That WEEE... Lol
