- Located just off the coast of Cairns, Fitzroy Island is one of the more accessible parts of the Great Barrier Reef and offers a variety of snorkelling and diving options.
Nudey Beach is a picturesque little beach just south of the resort section and formerly held the title of Australia's best beach. We snorkelled in a patch of coral just to the south of the beach around 30-50m from the shore in front of the rocks. A gentle current pushed from the south and allowed us to glide over the reef taking in a wide range of fish and coral life in far better shape than other locations on the island.
This snorkel was highlighted by a small anemone of clownfish, a school of barracuda and a small (torny?) shark that quietly slid past.
