    If I’m not mistaken, in Japanese mythology the koi is actually represented fighting against the current to transform in a dragon. It symbolizes perseverance and determination. Can someone confirm?
    Anyway, sick sketch ❤️‍🔥

      @xandernussy4114 3 года назад +26

      Youre correct…
      One of the most famous eastern folktales involving Koi is of the fish swimming upstream towards dragon’s gate, once it passes through it, it transforms into a dragon.

      It’s actually Chinese mythology, the koi swimming the yellow river

    • @PeachiiWubs
      @PeachiiWubs 2 года назад

      It's not a Japanese story. But yeah the dragon part and all is right

    • @keithnourse6829
      @keithnourse6829 2 года назад

      Yes the koi swim up the white river if I'm not mistaken and those that are strong enough to make it to the top turn into dragons the dragon headed koi fish not exactly sure what it's called a koi dragon it's like a koi fish with a dragon's head symbolizes the transformation.

    Man, I'm conflicted. I love Chris Garver's work, him and Mike Rubendall are the entire reason I fell in love with Japanese tattoos. I never would have expected him to break the rules of Japanese tattooing like this. The entire lore and meaning behind Koi tattoos is dependent on them swimming UP stream to become dragons. I'm not talking shit, and the art is beautiful, I'm just shook that 45 sec in, my life as a tattooer (doing as much Japanese work as possible) feels like a lie. I definitely wouldn't argue with Chris on what is or isn't acceptable in Japanese tattooing, He's probably won more awards with Japanese tattoos than I'll ever do, I'm just surprised.

    • @tobimiley
      @tobimiley 3 года назад +1

      Regarding the whole up or down swimming koi, it also means that swimming up is fighting to succeed in life, trying to make your way. Swimming down means you've done your thing and, now, you're heading to retirement, to your (final) rest, to peace. I've always thought that a koi swimming up on the back of one thigh, turning to a dragon on the back, and then a koi swimming down the back of the opposite thigh would be a cool design.

    I am sorry if this has been asked before. What are the pens that you use? They seem to dry pretty quick and give consistently good line work. I am also a left handed artist and I smudge the shit out of some of my work by not having the ink dry before hitting certain areas. I have resorted to wearing those 2 finger gloves when I draw now haha. Thanks for the great videos also!!!
