So the threads actually a good luck and protection charm thing.
The chantings he whispers is about protection and luck, and its in 'Pali", one of ancient language from India and core language used in Buddhist text.
Sinhala language is form by merging Sanskrit with writing Patten of Pali.
This is why Sinhala speakers can naturally understand Sanskrit words but cannot read or write them.

Dear dharma friends, I see that you are questioning the purpose of the gifted thread. This special little gift of thread is a blessing. A blessing that absobed good vibrations of daily chanting and recitings, of the disclosures of supreme Buddha. The disclosures of truths. And these strings hold the power of these absolute truths. And when you receive this gift, the monk also chants a beautiful blessings, which means may you be free of struggles, may you be free of illnesses, with all this blessings may you live a happy and long life he says in Pali language 🙏🏽
Also just letting you know that after a day or two or just whenever this white thread gets dirty just feel free to remove it. You dont need to hold on to the thread to hold on to the blessings.
I wish you all the best!☺️🙏🏽

love the video and glad you guys are enjoying the stay, quick side note about Sri Lankan Buddhist temples : We don’t refer to monks as “my friend” but I’m sure you meant that in a good way. Also temple is a place of silence, peace and respect, we usually wear only white clothes all covered, no shorts or revealing outfits. I just wanted to give some input so you guys know some of the important rules for future reference. I hope you both visit Sri Lanka many more times, thank you so much for this lovely video, lods of love from New York

They are both national holidays in Sri Lanka & Christians make up 7.4% of the population of the island. @15:33 a lovely family but I wouldn't refer to your banana wrapped meal as lamprais, which is a far more elaborate 3 meat dish supposedly inspired by the Dutch colonists.

The time of new year celebration will changed year by year but dates are exact 13th, and 14th of April. This year it became in the morning, Next year it might be Afternoon, evening, or night. It is main cultural festival in Sri Lanka.
The white string which is tied by Buddhist monk is a chanted String(Pirith String) which is powered by lord Buddha's preaches for provides safety, prosperity, and spiritual growth, and many more benefits. You can keep it as your wish or you can remove it within a day.

So what is this new year?
This is actually Solar new year similar to Chinese Lunar new year.
This is the time the Sun move from Pieces to Aries, completing whole cycle.
This system is originated in ancient Mesopotamia and Babylonian civilization But now only very few south Asian countries celebrate it, naming it as Sinhalese or Tamil's newyear.
    A Western adaptation?
Western culture does use this for whole different use. Western Zodiac system is fully based on this solar cycles....if you check in western culture, Aries begins on April 15, and Pisces end on April 14.

So that the priests give it as a blessing to people who comes to the temple.hope you understood what is it.😊👍 (My English might be grammatically wrong I’m not sure, for that my apologies because I’m still learning.)and enjoy your Sri Lanka tour

Dear friends, you have been asking what the monks say while tying the white string around your wrist, as well as it is for good luck it's goes more from protecting you from evil, danger, illness and all the bad things around, it's actually a blessing!

The meaning of the prayer said when tying the bracelet was: may all diseases be gone.
    May all dangers vanish
May you be blessed with long Life!

So the piece of white string they tied around your arm is actually a blessing string (Pirit String), and the little chant they did while tying it was reciting a "sutra" that's in Pali, not Sinhalese. The blessing string symbolizes purity and connection, and Buddhists believe it brings good fortune to the wearer and protects them from any kind of harm. Some people wear it for three days, some only for a day. Also, this is a custom in most Buddhist countries.

The bracelet is for good luck of course. They chant the blessings for good health and a long life when they tied it.

My friend you’ll wanted to know what is the meaning of the enchanting from the Buddhist monk while he tied you’ll the white bracelet it means
    Buddhas preaching :
    Sabbītiyo vivajjantu sabbarogo vinassatu,
    English meaning :
May you avoid all calamities and may all disease be destroyed,
    Buddhas preaching :
mā te bhavatvantarāyo, sukhī dīghāyuko bhava!
    English meaning :
may there be no obstacles for you, may you be happy and live long!
