Black swans with cygnets and their fight to survive

  • In St Jame's Park London a black swan pair had three cygnets in the summer 2019, Sadly only one survived but the one who did showed a will to battle against adversity. There was a challenge from a white swan but many different water birds live alongside each other on the lake in St Jame's Park. Although the swan pair have had cygnets hatch previous years this was the first year for a while that one has survived.

    I have to admit, my knowledge about black swans are near zero. But in your beautiful video, I find them very cute and friendly. So sad about those two loosened... I'm sure I will think of them for a while.
    Excellent filming of a life story 👏🐦🌿

      Maria Chat I know what you mean. Although I haven’t been able to see the black swans during lockdown I have been out more local to me .There have been a couple of white swan pairs who have also been nesting and hatching that I have visited and it has been a much-needed and very welcome distraction from the crisis..

    It's good to see at least 1 of the clutch survived! It's a hard life being a waterbird, because wherever waterbirds hang out, waterbird predators hang out too. And when they are just little fluffballs, even other waterbirds will make a snack of a cygnet if they get the chance. Luckily for cygnets, their moms are far more capable of defending them then a mama duck is of her brood.
    It's also amazing how very much like ducklings newly hatched cygnets look. There's almost no sign of that incredibly long and graceful neck they will eventually grow. (unless the herons get them. Or the stoats, or the hawks, or the pelicans etc.etc.)

      You are right about the predators. What I am also aware of near where I live is that newly hatched cygnets get taken by pike who are lurking in the water. Once the cygnets are several days or more the pike leave them alone but when they are at their smallest and most vulnerable, they are prey to the pike. I am referring to mute swan cygnets. I'd guess the same could be true for black swan cygnets also.

    This video is Enchanting, but also very dramatic when the white swan began to intimidate and finally attack the the defending parent, at first it was like watching a scene from the ‘Swan Lake’ ballet, and the accompanying music was very atmospheric! the remaining cygnet is a beauty, I hope it is still surviving! I used to visit the ‘Black Swans’ of ‘Dawlish’ some years ago, they also had a struggle to survive, the last time I visited they had all been killed by vandals, or, dogs! thank you 🙏 for sharing a different interpretation of ‘Swan Lake’ 👌😊🐣

      Thank you for your interesting comment. When I think about it black swan versus white swan has been presented as if good v bad or the different sides of one's nature. In this video it is the white swan who is the aggressor more than the innocent. I must say I like black swans and white; mute swans and I don't see one as being good and the other bad. In this location it is a fight for survival and unfortunately there will be casualties. I do also like the swan lake ballet and the tension and the grace within the ballet is something that could be said to also play out in the real world. :)

      Sian L....thank you for your reply, I agree with every thing you say, indeed all Swans black or white are the most beautiful and graceful of gods creatures, and have to survive along with every other wonderful creature great or small, and have to do what ever it takes to do so! and it is lovely that you care enough to make these amazing videos for our pleasure, thank you once again, take care, blessings from Derbyshire. 👌😊

    Hi, I live in New Zealand 🇳🇿 and for the first time ever I came across a black swan family with 6 cygnets in May this year. The lake is about 400 metres from my apartment, I visit them every day and luckily there are no white swans to harm the babies- only ducks and birds and the rude seagulls leave them alone. I love this channel and am subscribing today. Do the white swans in fact “kill” the babies? How?

    • @Sian.l.whitehead
      @Sian.l.whitehead  4 года назад +3

      Lucky you having a family of black swans near to you. I am not sure if the white swans would actually kill the young cygnets. I think all young water birds have their predators and it definitely won’t be the mute swans usually. What I did see that one day of the mute swan being aggressive towards the black swan and then one of the cygnets was also subject to an attack, that was not a nice sight. The cygnet did look alright after but when I went back there was one less. I can’t be sure whether it was as a result of the swan attack or not. My guess is that as they live in a park not a natural open space there is more competition and what happens there would not necessarily occur in a larger, natural area. I hope the family you are watching all survive, Good luck

      Frieda Gerber mute swans are typically less aggressive than the black ones. They often attack and kill other birds as well as kill mute swan cygnets and older siblings will kill younger cygnets

      Theodore Peake Here in London where mute swans are a native species it seems to be the black swans who are in a minority and are picked on. I have seen the mute swans attack the black swans and their young. Also mute swan cygnets have more of a chance of surviving than the black swan cygnets here. From what I have observed the mute swans are more dominant. I am wondering where black swans are a native species as in Australia, New Zealand whether they are more dominant there. Or even in areas where they are not so outnumbered.

      @@Sian.l.whitehead Hi there. To date I have seen no white swans here in NZ and happy to say all 6 cygnets of my black swan family are still fine and have grown so big! They know me well now and when they see me come for a snack of peas and corn eating out of my hand. The babies are very greedy and Dad flaps his wings to chase the ducks and other birds away - other than that I have not noticed them acting aggresively. Love them to bits
