It cost them the season but in an interview after the game he said something about how Aiyuk was open and how it was a good call. Motherfucker you just cost your entire team the season on YOUR call....and you're gonna try to convince us it was the right call? Foh, mid season that year Jerry Rice had called him out for putting players in compromising positions. The guy is a good offensive coach but he can't not get in his own way, the closer he gets to winning it all, the more he trips over himself to fuck it up. And it's not like the Niners can just demote him to OC, even though that is kind of where he can do the least damage. CMC had over 35 touches in that game and averaged 3 yards per carry. He got fed plenty. OL was terrible and receivers couldn't create separation.

It's a lot more ugly than that. Dan Quinn (Falcons HC) was the Seahawks Defensive Coordinator in Superbowl 49. In Superbowl 51, he wanted to arrogantly run up the score on New England. Shanahan obviously did, too.

I knew purdy was overrated and couldn't make the throws he would need. The Chiefs Offense was gone score eventually n 3 turnovers by them made the game closer than it was. Never did San Fran have control of the game. Even in overtime not knowing the rules. Pressure busts pipes

To get beat on the same play in the redzone that the Chiefs won last years Super Bowl with is utterly embarrassing. Even Andy Reid was taken aback and surprised that they weren’t prepared for it. Beyond that, the 49er defense regressed this season with Wilks. That’s just a fact. Compare the stats and rankings. But ok…nothing was Wilks fault. Gee, hmm, wonder why you have that opinion?? This appears to be a scapegoat move that's out of character with the 49ers nature. The same defense that helped get them the victory against Detroit. Yes, it sucks to lose but is this really the answer. Coach said it best, wrong match. Steve Wilks can now look for a better match. There are teams that could benefit from hiring him as a DC.

This isn't a Kyle Shanahan problem, this is a 49ers Leadership/Ownership issue.
They had 3 good drives in the first and came away with 3 pts, then settled for 3 in OT. The defense is the only reason they were in that game. You hold Mahomes to 19pts in regulation and can't win? That's the offense fault. Shanahan is a sore loser and known choker.

I've not been a Kyle Shanahan fan since he refused to admit his costly mistakes as the offensive coordinator of the Atlanta Falcons that led to the loss in the Super Bowl. Falcons were on the 22 yard line, a chip shot for Pro Bowler Matt Bryant. All Shanahan had to do was run the ball three times, run the clock down, and kick the field goal to go up by 11. Instead he calls three straight pass plays, The first was a sack. then a holding call. then an incomplete pass. They went from 1st down on the 22 to fourth down on the 45. He never apologized to the Atlanta fans and refused to take the blame. Accountability isn't in his wheel house.

Shannahan is owning the the NFC the past 4 yrs, taken a 3rd string quarterback and got him to the Superbowl in his 2nd year. Wilkes has been fired numerous of times. The 9sers defense needed a better play caller with all that talent and Wilkes wasnt doing it

If Steve was white he would still have a Job. NFL doesn't want black coaches to succeed. They only get head coaching jobs for teams in rebuild mode that make it's impossible to have success. They use Mike Tomlin as cover, Mike has had success and been a head coach for 16 years , but it's just for cover. Steve Wilks was the coordinator for the 3rd best defense in the league and they fire him. There's been 524 head coaches in league history and only 26 have been black, thats 5 percent total in history. In a country where black people are 15 percent of the population and in a sport where black players are 57.5 percent. Doesn't add up.

I don't understand why people are complaining that the defense was gassed. Of course they are going to be gassed after you have to punt twice in a row in the second half, giving up your lead. This is one of the most explosive offenses in the league and they held them to that many points, that's phenomenal.
A screen won the game. Most the passes in the game by KC was screens. How do you lose the game by a screen pass. Whole coaching staff needs fired..

Not as talented as he was made out to be. If you receive all those opportunities and never produce then daddy should have taught him something else not football. Dudes Achilles tendon was hanging by a thread if it tore that easy. He had to have tweaked it earlier in the game and one wrong twist snapped it.
I hate the Wilks firing. But I think the criticism to take the ball first is undue, AND I think the strategy to NOT take the ball first is stupid.
First of all, from a physical standpoint, the 9ers D had just come of the field from a long, no-huddle, fast paced, two-minute drive. Undoubtedly, they were tired and needed the breather.
Secondly, from a strategic standpoint it's foolish to NOT take the ball first and here's why...with the new OT rules each team is guaranteed the ball one time regardless of the type of score put up by the first possessor.
After that, if they're tied, the very next score wins. So, if SF had scored a TD and KC had answered with a TD, SF gets the ball back with a chance to win even with a FG with KC getting to possess the ball again.
So, that means whoever takes the ball first in OT is guaranteed a 2nd possession if both teams put up identical scores after their first possession.
So why would the team who wins the coin toss (SF) want to give the other team (KC) a chance at 2 possessions, and put themselves in a position to not be able to answer a second score? That makes no sense to me.
The ONLY it would make sense is if, the team who scored last in the OT, gets the ball right back with a chance to score and end the game.
Aside from this scenario, it makes 100% sense to take the ball first in OT from a strategy standpoint. But for SF it made sense also their D was tired.
The 49ers were a top 5 scoring defense (18.8 PPG), but:
- 27th in 3rd down percentage
- Went from 1st to 12th in EPA per play
- Fell from the best rushing defense to 26th
- Sack percentage dropped to 20th
- Players were frustrated with scheme
- Shanahan called Wilks out after Vikings game
- Moved Wilks from the booth to sideline
- Shanahan had to play too big of a role in the defensive game-plan going into and during the Super Bowl
- Multiple conversations about how the front four wasn't tied to the back-end
