This was awesome ! If you anchor overnight in Thomas Bay, watch out for the devilmen, aka, 'Kushtaka' that reside there !! 😊 Many thanks for the great content.
You really want me leave a comment here ?? I've been sailing for 50 years and... You are... lucky, crazy (GRP + ice), gloriously adventurous, cruelly epicurean and definitely endearing. These 43 minutes I spent with you deserve a little bit of eternity. Thank you so much.
Really have been enjoying your channel, and think you are way under rated considering what you put into the videos and the passion you clearly have for adventure. I almost exclusively watch cruising channels, both motor and sail, and you are among the best in my opinion. I hope you have countless great adventures and am eager to follow along! 👍
Wow, thank you so much for this extremely kind compliment! That really means a lot. It makes us so happy to hear others enjoy what we’re creating, we hope to get to share many more with you! Cheers!
I liked the shot of what looked like three rivers of mirror flat water traveling in alternating directions dotted with "berg-ey" bits on top! VERY mesmerizing!!
I think our memories here will stick with us for a long long time! Thank you for being on the journey and sharing in the joy of this one with us. Looking forward to sharing the rest of the season with you, Merry Christmas!
Love it! I too have treated myself to 10,000 year old cocktails, in my case a Caucasion (a white Russian), when we did a job outside of Anchorage at Portage Glacier. It was good if a bit gritty.
I grew up in Juneau, and worked on the Ferries that go up and down through S.E. Your videos make me sooo homesick. You are living the dream. God bless you, and thank you for sharing your life with us.
Awh, that’s amazing. The area around Juneau is so stunning! Getting to experience those landscapes daily for work must have been incredible. Sorry for the homesickness but hope our videos help to take you back there! Thank you for sharing with us, cheers!
Great video of your trip into Le Conte Glacier, with very prehistoric Manhattens! I didn't realize that big mud flat was the Stikine River delta, very cool. Been to Stikine Headwaters but never the delta.
Not sure I know the song, but I like it! Hahah thanks for sharing in the joy of this one with us! We’ve got a few more episodes of ice filled wonder ahead!
Excellent story telling & cinematography. The Glacier Bar will always be serving in memory. Paula and I remember the “rice crispies” sound while moving through the magical flow of bitty-bergs. So amazing! Catch the Wind, you two!
‘Ice crispies’! Such a cool experience to float around in a giant bowl of ice! Glad you’ve gotten to experience it first hand! Thanks for the kind words, hopefully glacier bar will keep flowing for years to come, cheers!
Greetings Allison and James:I almost instantly recalled your opening scenes as having sailed there from Vancouver B.C. 43 yers ago in my little CS 27(27 feet). GPS did not exist then and we could not afford loran or satnav or radar. So off we sailed, the 3 of us including a reluctant Irish Setter into the sunset with only compass and sextant and many charts which containted a number of blank areas uncharted. The target destination would be Glacier Bay.Well, we never made it to Glacier Bay! After reaching Ketchikan on July 4th,thereafter ,the weather started to turn ugly and continued to worsen all the way to Wrangel and Peterberg. We did a tour of Fredrick Sound when the weather eased but we did not attempt to enter Le Conte Bay. The gaciers, icebergs and mountain snow caps were much greater than I see in your video. Berg dodging became somewhat tedious after a while! Capturing small chunks of ice replenished our water tanks by melting the pieces in a pot over a kerosene burner. The ice was extrodinarily dense and lasted quite a long time. Since there was no relief reported by weather bulletins,we decided to abandon our target destination and backtrack to the northern tip of Vancouver Island and sail along the west coast and home. Thanks for rekindling the memories! Long may you run.
Wow what an adventure! Very cool. Navigating was completely different back then, we feel very fortunate (spoiled!) to be sailing in the age of Navionics! Would have been quite the feat to attempt to enter Le Conte bay in poor weather without adequate charting. We got lucky on this day - you might notice in our next episode how much things changed overnight! The glacier calved tremendously and the inlet was completely filled with ice. Definitely a dramatic area, and the weather is quite testing as well haha. Thank you so much for sharing!!
Great videos - I am a Bluenoser who has enjoyed sauerkraut & the Willy T .... and walked on the north end of Baffin Island seeing the glaciers !!!! Truly spectacular !⛵⚓
You 2 just proved that Ralph Waldo Emerson was high on indica when he said, "It's not the destination, it's the journey". Stellar video. Happy to see that the voyage is going well. Safe travels. Cheers!
Sometimes the destination is what it’s all about Mr. Emerson… Interstellar, a guy who was known as ‘Waldo’, his mind may have indeed taken a lap or two around Mars… Pretty far out for a man of his era. Glad you enjoyed the video @2002guy!
Just found you two. Quite a contrast to the Baja and South Pacific channels I follow. No skinny dipping here!! Love what you’ve shown in this fjord with the glacial ice and seals. When our daughters were in jr. high took them on the Inside Passage ferry from Bellingham to Haines to see elementary school friends. Love that country and thanks for sharing your adventure. Looking forward to seeing more of your episodes. Thanks.
Glad you found us! The water up here is really cold and water visibility is so poor with all the glacial silt, really not an attractive place to go for a dip! We've got a lot more of Alaska to show in this season, so stay tuned!
❤ Wonderful! Thank you so much for having us join along! Thoroughly enjoyed it! 😅 I got emotional because you were so happy and overjoyed at the beauty of it all!
All my favorite channels are dodging ice.... Alluring Arctic in the NW passage, Eric viking in Greenland, Sweet Ruca in Patagonia....... But Alaska accompanied by cocktails and a rendition of ELO ...... Take a bow 😅
We just toasted w you!!!!! Without the fresh ice!!!!! You two are AWESOME!!! We love to follow you!!!! A wealth of information!!!! We are sitting in our home in Venice Florida!!!!
Thank you for this burgie video. The grub Allison prepared for the occasion as well as the burg drink; so good! I had some Brandy vapors with you and I'm happy you're both out of the danger of colliding with a burg. Although I'm assuming the Captain navigated his inflatable successfully in the last few seconds. Please be careful; both of you. -Curt❤❤
Haha thanks for enjoying a drink with us Curt! Was great to share this one with you! We wake up in a completely different scene the next day, with ice everywhere! The glacier calves tremendously overnight. We’ll share that with you next time, cheers!
Making side trips to visit some of Alaska's tidewater glaciers was one of the many highlights of my two kayak trips on the inside passage from Seattle to Skagway. You do have to be very cautious about getting too close when a berg calves off the glacier because it releases a lot of ice which can cover the entire fjord and when the wind is moving the ice it can capsize a kayak. Unlike some of the other fjords, the one leading to Le Conte has a shallow entrance so cruise ships can't enter. Thanks for the video that allowed me to reminisce a little.
The side trips to the various tidewater glaciers are a highlight of the passage for sure! Overnight LeConte glacier calved tremendously and the next day when we awoke the inlet was completed covered in ice! Seen in the next video. So glad you’re enjoying this trip down memory lane, cheers!
Absolutely incredible video!!! I have been watching your videos from the beginning, so amazing and inspiring to see how far you guys have come!! Congrats!!
@AllisonandJamesSailing yes it needs alot but I enjoy the challenge! It's a windward 850 .I'm thinking 2-3 year project. It has a good diesel engine. Stay safe be well
Definitely a highlight, so awesome to see on your own sailboat. We have seen Dawes and Mendenhall on a tour but can only imagine if on our own sailboat. Just fantastic drone footage and content love watching.
Was truly a special moment. So glad you’ve gotten to experience the beauty up there first hand. We absolutely loved our time up at Dawes, some of our favorite the entire trip. We anchored in the North arm up there for a few days and spent a week in Fords Terror. Looking forward to sharing those videos with you in the coming weeks
We are enjoying your adventure and unfortunately we couldn’t make it to the Glacier Bar. It would be epic to say the least. We were moved by the obvious emotions as we witnessed your dream come true as you entered LeConte Bay. Wishing you safe journeys and more surreal adventures.
You two are past entertaining, beautiful adventure. SV Brooklyn Salish Sea. Maybe I try a manhattan instead of scotch on my next cruise. Perfect ice, but no cherry?
when fishing off the outer banks we use our net for a DRONE PAD , just get it over the net an cut power ? if u miss go to dripppng real fast. Great show as alway"s say safe .
The fishing net works like a charm! We’ve been using it to catch ours since day one. We fly the drone over and into the net, the propellers stop as soon as they hit the mesh. Always nerve wrecking but haven’t lost one that way yet (knock on wood). Glad you’re enjoying the show, cheers!
Love to hear that, maybe we’ll see you up here! Launching the drone is easy, it will just fly off the palm of your hand. Retrieving is a different story, always a bit of a stressful mission😅 We haven’t seen anyone else do this but we actually use a massive fishing net to catch the drone. We should really show that in a video sometime soon haha
Wonderful videos! Love all the NW videos, learning about sailing, meal planning and NW passage making, and apparently glacial manhattans ! Have a question about drones and curious which ones you have used and what would you say the positives and negatives were for each. My wife and I plan to more cinematography from our sailboat and both have Apple products (Mac, iphone, Ipad). We want to know what drones have good video, good range (elevation and distance, and battery), ease of maneuverability, ease of charging on limited charging capacity of a boat, and what software is easiest on the boat. Thank you for any tips! Will keep watching all these as they are the BEST out there for the PNW and sailing.
Thank you! So happy to hear you’re enjoying the videos and being on the learning journey with us! We’re certainly no experts when it comes to drones and can’t confidently answer all those questions without doing heaps of research ourselves. Our experience tho is that the best drone is the one that you’re not afraid to fly and can afford to lose. We’ve met many folks who have really nice cameras and drones but don’t use them because they’re afraid to break or lose them. The reality of filming on a moving boat in wet salty conditions is that gear will break and be lost. Great drone cinematography in our opinion is a product of flight time, the more you practice the better you get! And for this reason we recommend people go with something like a Mavic Mini. They’re small and budget friendly. Can take them anywhere, get lots of experience flying and if you lose one you won’t be devastated. At this point you want to be filming in 4K or better. Recommend the DJI Mini Pro 4 (we’re currently flying this one off the boat and we really like it). We also have a Mavic Air 2S which we bought two years ago to level up from the Mavic mini we had at that time, it’s a slightly bigger heavier drone that films in 4k and handles windier conditions better etc. basically a better drone that we could afford at the time. Now they’ve come out with the 3S (and beyond probably). With regards to software, are you wondering about editing programs? We’re on Windows and using Premier Pro and the Creative Adobe Suite. Hope that’s helpful, cheers!
Can you talk some about how you get fresh water? We do not have a water maker and do not intend to get one, so water is an issue for us. As with Most C30's we have 45-gallons of water which does not last all that long.
Hey Hayden! There’s no need for a water maker cruising the Inside Passage.. there are frequent towns/communities/places to get water! We could go three-four weeks without filling up, sans showering and using salt water to wash dishes. We store an additional five gallon jug onboard in case of emergencies and a solar bag for cockpit showers which we can fill up from waterfalls/rivers etc. Hope that’s helpful, cheers!
That's one hell of a nice breakfast! When I get my boat that I plan on sailing around the world, I plan on doing this same trip that you've taken. I live in northern WA and have seen some of this coastline before but I was on a cruise ship and they travel at night so we didn't see everything. I also was on a Young Life sailing program where we went out for a few days but we didn't go that far north from Vancouver, BC. I did get to swim and the water temp wasn't that cold at all which was very surprising. I want to visit those hot springs! Where are you at in real time right now and when are you planning on leaving from when you cross the Pacific? I'm planning on building my boat in the Philipeans and head toward the Caribbean. Then I plan on doing the Great American Loop and head on over to Europe. From there I plan on sailing around South America following Sailing Sweet Ruca's path and then cross the Pacific where they did but I plan on hitting all of the islands along the way.
Good food is an important part of the journey! Sailing around the world is a wonderful and ambitious dream, there’s so much to see! Do you have boat building or other sailing experience or will you be learning along the way? We’re most interested in high latitude sailing. Chile is definitely on the list! We’re still up North and won’t be crossing the Pacific anytime soon, not on this boat haha
@@AllisonandJamesSailing II was in a junior sailing program where we learned everything about a boat and the operation of it. That propelled me into winning a major Tornado catamaran qualifying regatta for the Olympics. I got four first's and one second with about 120 other Tornado catamarans on the starting line. I also won the Naple Sabor Nationals but got kicked out because I ended up being a few weeks to older than required which I didn't know about. Got 6th place in the Laser North Americans and in the Flight of the Lasers. Then I sailed 1/3rd around the world aboard a 165ft. gaff rigged schooner called TeVega that is now called DEVA for 11 1/2 months. The largest boat that I've ever owned was a racing beach cat. My next boat will be a Mumby Cyber 48 just like what Sailing Life on Jupiter has. That's a RUclips channel that I also like watching. I haven't sailed in a long time due to work in the construction industry and almost forgot about my dream of sailing around the world till a friend reminded me of me saying that a long time ago. Yeah, I got caught up in work and was just surviving but not thriving. Now I'm bored of the land life and want something different. Living on a boat is an adventure and is less expensive than living on land. I'd really like learn how to kit surf and resume free diving again. It's expensive to live this life style and very difficult to be able to afford to do it.
Make sure you explore the Inside Passage and the PNW before you head south. I left Comox in 2018 (now in Panama) but regret not more thoroughly exploring home waters before I left.
This is our fourth season up here and not planning to head out anytime soon, it’s amazing up here! The hot busy anchorages down south aren’t calling to us at all
As we mentioned in the video, the town of Petersburg is fairly close by - lots of folks make day trips up here including tour groups and fishing vessels. If we ran into serious trouble we wouldn’t hesitate making a call out for help - can broadcast a call on the VHF, use Garmin InReach, or Starlink etc. Does that help answer your question?
LeConte glacier is quite well studied and interestingly it has been in a relatively steady state (neither advancing or retreating). This isn’t the case for 95% of glaciers in Alaska which are sadly, retreating at an alarming rate
Wow that's a great video!,Also very beautiful scenery! Alaska is very beautiful ! I am living on Fogo Island, in iceberg alley. A few years ago I counted 150 icebergs. Last year I seen three!
So glad you enjoyed it! Alaska is absolutely stunning country! No stranger to icebergs on Fogo island! So beautiful seeing them go by in the Spring. I (Allison) am from St. John’s Newfoundland originally. Still haven’t been to Fogo but have always wanted to visit. Would love to sail around there one day :)
James, Please control your language, we watch your renderings with our granddaughters… we are retired sailors living in Ontario, have dived the Queen Sharlotte
Apologies we’ll try to reel it in, we were a little excited. All the same we do list our videos on YT as ‘not for kids’ 😅 Queen Charlottes are now referred to as Haida Gwaii, cheers!
Nice landscape. But this overacting behavior doesn't fit you and the environment you're sailing at all. Especially when James is doing it, it's noticeable artificial. Take an example on Matt from The Duracell Project. He just said "I'm a boatbuilder, not an actor". I'd absolutely hate it to act like that just for a few more clicks from stupid landlubbers.
A highlight of our sailing journey, we can't wait to share this one with you!
This was awesome ! If you anchor overnight in Thomas Bay, watch out for the devilmen, aka, 'Kushtaka' that reside there !! 😊 Many thanks for the great content.
Thank you! So glad you enjoyed it! We head to Thomas Bay and the Baird glacier after Le Conte! We’ll see what we encounter there💫

Awh wow, that’s pretty amazing to hear, thank you. So glad you think so! We hope to keep making more like this!
so glad you had such a lucky weather window to get close to the glacier.. those seals are so beautiful with all their spots!
We got very lucky indeed! It was an amazing experience to spend time floating around with the seals and their pups.
I liked the shot of what looked like three rivers of mirror flat water traveling in alternating directions dotted with "berg-ey" bits on top! VERY mesmerizing!!
Awww that is also one of our favorite shots, so cool to see the different currents moving the ice around.
Stunning scenery and videoing. Congratulations on an amazing adventure.
Cheers Mate!

when fishing off the outer banks we use our net for a DRONE PAD , just get it over the net an cut power ? if u miss go to dripppng real fast.
Boldly going where few Catalina Owners have sailed before….. 🖖😜
Next trip, Mars! Hahah thanks for sharing this one with us Robert! We’ll see you in the next one, cheers! 🪐
You two inspired this old geezer to sail farther north. How do you launch and retrieve your drone from your boat?
Love to hear that, maybe we’ll see you up here! Launching the drone is easy, it will just fly off the palm of your hand. Retrieving is a different story, always a bit of a stressful mission😅
We haven’t seen anyone else do this but we actually use a massive fishing net to catch the drone.
@@AllisonandJamesSailing thank you for the insights
The hot busy anchorages down south aren’t calling to us at all
It have been cool to record the sound only of ice berg cool sounds
We used the natural recording to create the soundscape :)
Find a pool noodle to attach to the drone to keep it from sinking?
I think the drone would have a hard time flying with a pool noodle attached to it haha
Great Video, who says you can’t say LeConte in Canada….
Not I! Glad you enjoyed the video mate!
In what month was this filmed?
This was the last week of June 2024.
i wonder what you gonna do if engine will fail
We’d fix the engine
@@AllisonandJamesSailing yes i know i watched your videos but what if it will happend where to call for help i just guess
@@AllisonandJamesSailing yes thank you
🐻🐻🐻
Thanks for watching, cheers!
Hopefully the glacier will stay alive for many to come
You can bring me there
LeConte glacier is quite well studied and interestingly it has been in a relatively steady state (neither advancing or retreating). This isn’t the case for 95% of glaciers in Alaska which are sadly, retreating at an alarming rate
👍👍⛵🌎🎸😎
Cheers!
@AllisonandJamesSailing you are both welcome to visit!
Awe thank you, one day in the near future!
Translate of German, Super Thing
Glad you enjoyed it, cheers!
James, Please control your language, we watch your renderings with our granddaughters… we are retired sailors living in Ontario, have dived the Queen Sharlotte
Apologies we’ll try to reel it in, we were a little excited. All the same we do list our videos on YT as ‘not for kids’ 😅
Queen Charlottes are now referred to as Haida Gwaii, cheers!
I think we can all agree that no-one is an actor around here.
